Years ago, back when Netflix still sent DVDs in the mail, they decided to give me a movie I didn't ask for, an extremely earnest message movie about sex addiction called Thanks for Sharing (2012), starring Tim Robbins, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Gad, and Pink.

It's not just that it was a bad movie, it was embarrassing. Guys crying about being horny. Big mess. What really stuck out to me, though, was how the treatment of this "addiction" didn't even hold up to a second's scrutiny.

See, the final goal of their self-help program for sex addicts wasn't abstinence, it was monogamy. That's not how addictions work, right? Your AA sponsor isn't going to tell you to stick to one brand of whiskey. Recovery for gambling addiction doesn't involve a commitment to high-stakes blackjack. You don't beat your coke habit by staying loyal to one supplier.

So, if your addiction just magically stops being harmful when it's convenient, maybe it was all bullshit in the first place?
