my friend events this week:
I reached out to an old high school friend after 12 years of not speaking, only to find that she's in Greece doing a phd on psychiatric euthanasia. I confessed to being ignorant about the topic, so she emailed me 19 research papers and said "this will be a good start"
I asked another friend to provide a professional reference for me as part of a grant application. she agreed to, on the condition that I log into neopets, collect the daily free item, and transfer it to her account

“Kill shelters” are the shelters you need to donate to.
“But shrimp!! Kill shelters are evil!!”
No, shut up, listen to me for a second.
“Kill shelter” is a colloquial term used primarily for Town/City (aka municipal) shelters that rely on incredibly limited government grant funding to operate.
These shelters, by the very nature of their existence, DO NOT HAVE the funds to operate like private rescues do.
On top of this, they’re also *legally required* to take in ANY animal that comes to them. Even if they’re full. Or they’ll lose all of their funding.
This is what leads them to needing to euthanize for space. Is euthanizing for space sad? Yes. But due to the current crisis, it’s also NECESSARY.
These shelters are constantly overfull. They’re STRUGGLING. They don’t have the funds to operate properly. And yet these municipal, government funded, struggling shelters are the same ones that are most likely to be providing care for owned animals in the community
Municipal (“kill”) shelters are the ones hosting low cost spay and neuter clinics. They’re the ones discounting vaccination appointments and microchipping. They’re the ones that have pet food banks so struggling pet owners can feed their pets that week.
These shelters are not evil. They’re doing the absolute best they can with the bare minimum funding they get.
These people are incredibly resourceful and care very deeply about the animals in their care. It breaks their heart every time they have to euthanize an animal that couldn’t get adopted.
These underfunded shelters need your money significantly more than that fancy private rescue you see on TikTok or instagram that has a beautiful facility and has never had to euthanize an animal ever.
Support your local shelters and they will give back to the community thousand fold.
Sincerely, an animal welfare student who’s tired of seeing the hardest working professionals shat on because of circumstances they can’t control.

Hey do y’all remember when Boeing fucking killed a guy last year. And we all said “huh I guess Boeing fucking killed a guy” and then went on with our lives. And everybody knew that Boeing had fully just fucking executed a guy and nothing came of it. Like there was no police investigation no justice no nothing. Like literally EVERYBODY knew that Boeing had full on murdered a guy to silence him and there wasn’t any consequences for them. Kinda crazy.

Transphobia is so antithetical to genuine feminism it blows my mind there's such a wide overlap like you either believe in autonomy and self determination or you don't

ugh characters who present themselves or genuinely see themselves as cool and friendly and lighthearted, a fun time and good company, being canonically fucking terrifying, maybe even BECAUSE of their lack of venom and visible angst or ego , and not getting it at all. gojo, dante, percy, luffy. I love creatures/beings that don't quite fit the guise they've taken on.

!!!SPOILERS!!! FOR THE LAST OF US
what really gets my goat about abby (as someone who played like half the game has a sister obsessed with it and watched the show) isn't that she wants to kill joel or even that she does it. Violence begets violence and love is the strongest source of motivation we have. Her reasoning and feelings are real and expected. What I don't like is (in the show) her seeming to be unaware of the shitshow the world is. Joel may not be the definition of a good person, but he is a product of this world. He murdered the people who were going to kill his child, again. We easily justify this despite abby being a living and real victim of his violence, partially because that is the world they live in. People, including people in abbys community im sure, do horrible things for themselves or the people around them. She seems stuck on how "unfair" it is, but if thats unfair what has the last 25 years been? chill? lawful and good? Im also baffled that she feels torturing him was equal to a single kill shot to the head. I hate she killed him, but my biggest problem is the unnecessary brutality. He killed a lot of people in that hospital, none of them were alive to feel him bashing their face in. If you want revenge fine, kill him or someone he loves. You are now the (assumedly) worst person in the room. Not because you sought vengeance but because you exceeded what was needed to accomplish it. Ofc joel murdering an entire hospital may be excessive, but none of them planned to let him live either.
But i also love how that begs the question of when does it end? She now has a mini joel on her tail (i could physically feel in my brain the moment it clicked inside ellie that she was going to murder these people ughghghgh) because her grief wouldn't let her move on. I'm so excited to see this portrayal of ellie and abby as the story goes on. I'm ready to see how they've adapted her journey to seattle. This world makes you greedy and possessive, especially over the only people you have left in this world. She thought they would have more time to heal and forgive and grow closer, and it was brutally snatched away IN FRONT of her. We've seen before ellie's determination to do something with her life, as she sees it as worthless outside of dying or giving herself to a cause befitting the loss she has rendered, but what does that look like wrapped around the grief of the only parent you've ever known being beaten to death before your eyes. Abby couldn't let a reasonably painless, albeit merciless, death go. How is ellie going to do anything but burn the world to ash?
im also mostly ranting and looking at it from a lot of angles, i don't actually think it's black and white, or that abby is a wack character. I think the games did a great job fleshing her out and making her a real person you go through things with. The show has just reopened some wounds so im here to scream lmao. So looking forward to the next ep!

btw being excessively nonconfrontational is NOT a positive trait. it does not mean u are “too nice” or just too kind to hurt people, it means u have a problem communicating and you need to work on it.
