no you need to understand that Dean never took Sam’s side growing up, he always sided with John, he never stood up to John, which is why that moment in 1x20, the first time Dean does, is so monumental - it’s the culmination of his development that whole season, coming to acknowledge the flaws in his father and the significance of independence the more Dean learns to understand Sam emotionally, which Dean never did growing up, he looked out for Sam, protected him, but he did not understand how Sam felt, never really tried to - and the same can be said for Sam, he didn’t understand Dean, the Stanford fight was a culmination of years of misunderstanding and lack of communication between them and it’s not until they’re thrown back together in season 1 that they’re forced to confront WHY that fight happened in the first place, without the presence of John there to create further tension. The brothers LEARN about each other, how their childhood impacted them in different ways, how they felt then, how they feel now, and things start to click. Behaviors, attitudes make more sense. They’re able to see the other’s point of view for the first time and respect it. Which includes how they each feel about their dad, Dean and Sam start out pretty Pro and Anti and end up in the middle with Sam acknowledging the virtues in John because of Dean and Dean acknowledging John’s failures, then and now, because of Sam. And that’s my point, that this development could not have happened without each other. Dean never would have broken free of his good little soldier role if Sam hadn’t been there encouraging (actively and passively) Dean’s independence and self-worth, arguing that John’s actions are flawed or fucked up and Dean needs to see that, Dean needs to stand up and speak his mind because Sam knows Dean has a mind of his own and wants to. And with Sam’s support Dean has the courage to and it’s monumental. It’s a turning point. I cannot stress enough how much strength it took for Dean to disagree with John and keep disagreeing with John and side with Sam and how that is because of Sam and the emotional journey the brothers have been on together.
