The Two Crowns by Frank Bernard Dicksee (1853-1928), an oil on canvas painting, painted 1900. It is a part of Tate Britain’s gallery in London.
The painting shows a scene where medieval prince returns and is greeted by a jubilation but is astounded by a crucifix instead of celebrating. The title draws attention to the king’s golden crown and Christ’s crown of thorn. Dicksee uses this highly moral scene to poke holes in the importance and relevance of the noble king in armor, and pointing towards a life with spiritual significance. The painting is a reminder of the contrast between earthly, temporal power and spiritual power.
