The story behind DEAR CHILD
In 2012 Luca Ammendola, a film maker from Italy went to Brazil at the invitation of the NGO Casa do Menor - an organisation run by Father Renato Chiera who help the street children of Rio de Janeiro.
It was his first time in South America, and his first time in Brazil. He arrived with the thought of a short adventure and maybe a small documentary. But as he was introduced to their world, and to the beauty amongst the most deadliest struggles, he felt that it was important to make a film that would show their world and the profound effect that it had on him personally.

Coming back from Casa Andre to Miguel Couto, there is a ruin on a hill. This is the Slave House. The last remnants of the colonial era. It is now slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, covered in gang tags, A part of history that no-one wishes to preserve.

The 2012 intake at Casa Andre
The children there are from the age of 10-18. They can only stay for a limited time, but it gives them a place where they can play and learn in safety.

The first trip to Casa Andre.
This is a refuge on the edge of the jungle for the most damaged kids. Children involved in drug trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and domestic abuse. It is a beautiful haven for them. Many of the children here have been put on Death lists - unofficial lists created by either local gangs or the Militia death squads (corrupt ex-police officers and military)

The Journey
Over the coming months, we will post up the journey that we all took to make DEAR CHILD. From the initial trips by the director Luca Ammendola ,to the final day of the red carpet premiere, and the follow up of the main protagonists we filmed.
This journey is less the making of a film, than a discovery of beautiful people and incredible hard work by the dedicated team at the NGO Casa Do Menor in Rio, and the wonderful people of Brasil that we encountered along the way.
This film is a tribute to the ceaseless efforts of Father Renato Chiera and his team at Casa Do Menor to save children and help those who need love and attention.
You have now seen a few images. Let me take you back to the beginning four years ago....
