Another idea to consider:

Because her father didn't die in the brothel raid, but she is still fated to become a magical girl, so she needs a push.

Her father is there when Piers lashes out, her father is able to protect his family from Minou's father, things are good for awhile.. until the plague rolls into town, and her father is called into duty as a doctor.

It's only a matter of time before exhaustion from caring for the sick makes her father miss things he wouldn't if he was fully rested.. such as sanitization protocols.. the plague takes hold of him.

Corbeau has seen the plague take her friends and others, she's seen how painful and terrifying it is. To think her own father could be claimed by this disease.. no! There has to be a way!

Suddenly, she hears a voice in her head, and sees a white creature unlike anything she's ever seen.

Reading Sc.ene 0 stuff got me thinking: What would have to happen for C.orbeau to not contract with Is.abeau?

I think the answer is if her father wasn't killed in the raid against the brothel she and her family lived in. He was already a positive influence on her and La.pin's life at that point in time and his death shook Corbe.au to her core, and was the butterfly effect that would eventually lead to Isabe.au.

If he had survived, his positive influence would have continued, a more thorough education as she and her sisters would get older, a better education would mean better opportunities so they wouldn't have to scrap by and move from town to town. I could even see Cor.beau wanting to be like her father and becoming a doctor or similar.

Prior to forming a contract with Isabeau, Isabeau took the time to inform Corbeau about everything she was about to get herself into. Isabeau felt no reason to hide this information from her, as it was part of the agreement between the two of them-- Corbeau becomes a magical girl and serve under her, while her sisters get food and shelter in exchange.

Corbeau knew and fully understood the risks of contracting and pressed forward to make the contract for the sake of her sisters. Corbeau even told her sisters what she was going to become and what it was going to mean-- they kept no secrets from each other.

At least, back then they didn't.

Me last night: Hm, Goddoka's banner runs out tomorrow, I haven't done any pulls for her yet... I do have quite a bit of gems saved up, maybe I should pull for her a couple times before the banner is gone. I'm not really expecting anything though.

"I feel... like a powerful presence has made itself known recently.."

Corbeau watches Chopper's attempt to face the witch with an unamused expression. She did not bother to stop him as he charged ahead and delivers a powerful punch-- though the force he put into it did pique Corbeau's interest in him.

Once Chopper's form had slumped down in the corner of the wall, Corbeau sighed and rolled her shoulders as she stood in front of the witch.

When she was getting tossed around by the witch, it gave her some valuable information. It seemed that it attacked with one side of it's body, not the other-- A likely weakness.

Quick as lightning, Corbeau rushes the witch. The witch retaliating with a flurry of tendrils-- which Corbeau mostly dodges but she still takes a few hits-- until Corbeau found herself at the part of the witch that it desperately tried to protect.

"Die already!" Corbeau leaps into the air and lands a strong kick, right in the perceived weakspot.

The girl almost certainly thought nothing of Chopper's attempt at heroics, though when the child threatened him, he gasped softly. "I don't know what you're getting at, but you need to run! That thing in the center of this weird maze is trying to kill us!" He warned sternly, rushing forward to attack the witch all on his own. He delivered a powerful punch that could shatter boulders to the monster, only to be knocked away by a tendril, smashing his back against a strange brick wall in the labyrinth. "Agh!" With that hit, Chopper's body transformed back to its original, toddler-sized form as it fell limp against the ground.

"Get behind me!" Chopper shouted as he jumped in front of the child to defend her from the onslaught of a large monster he couldn't describe in words. It was alien. Otherworldly even. Regardless, Chopper couldn't allow a little kid to die.

The creature in question, was a witch. Creatures designed to spread misfortune and curses-- it was only natural that they were impossible to describe.

Corbeau personally found witches underwhelming. She knew what they were and where they came from, but none of them could even compare to the strength of the first witch she had ever encountered. So if she was faced with a witch, Corbeau often let the witch think that it was toying with it's meal before devouring it.. which was the opposite of what was going to happen.

Corbeau was starting to get bored with this witch and it's attack patterns, that meant it was time for her to finish and move on to something else, but.. this time she was interrupted by a creature she thought was more baffling than the witch.

There's a pause as Corbeau takes a moment to assess what had just happened, her self-healing getting right to work with what minor injuries she had sustained from her bout with the witch.

"..There is no need to involve yourself." She says simply from behind Chopper. "I have this under control. Go home, beast. Or shall I dispatch you myself?"
