8 Natural Ways to Freshen Your Home
Everyone wants their house to smell amazing. Whether you have company visiting, or you just want to stay home and be cozy, a great smelling home is always comforting. If you want to freshen the air but don’t want to turn to toxic chemicals, incorporate essential oils instead. Here are 8 natural ways to freshen your home and make it smell amazing.Â
There are certain non-negotiables in my house. My husband (20 years strong) would never dream of buying me a scented candle, body spray, or even perfume as a gift. He knows better. There is simply no bargaining or debate.Â
When it comes to synthetic fragrances and artificial air fresheners, they are off-limits. We opt for homemade cleaners, diffusers, and DIY recipes instead. Essential oils are a wonderful alternative to synthetic scents.Â
Best Essential Oils for Natural Fragrance
Not all essential oils smell good. Some oils downright stink. If you are trying to make your house smell amazing, select oils that are aromatically pleasing. These are my favorite essential oils to freshen my home:Â
Lavender
Citrus Fresh
Purification
Peppermint
Orange
Lemon
Joy
Geranium
Lemon Myrtle
Rosemary
Eucalyptus
Bergamot
Grapefruit
Cinnamon Bark
Clove
Lemon Verbena

8 Natural Ways to Freshen Your Home
Eliminate odors and refresh rooms with all-natural ingredients and essential oils. Your home will smell fresh, clean, and amazing! Find out how to freshen your home naturally.
1. Ultrasonic Diffuser
If you’re an essential oil user, chances are you have an ultrasonic diffuser in your home. Diffusing allows you to enjoy the aromatic benefits of essential oils in a safe and beneficial method for your entire family.Â
Ultrasonic diffusers use vibrations to break down essential oils into teeny-tiny particles which are then mixed with water and dispersed into the air as an aromatic mist. Depending on the diffuser, you should be able to fill an entire room with fragrance for several hours at a time.Â
The only downside to ultrasonic diffusers would be access to an electric outlet. They are great for bedrooms, living rooms, and offices. Diffusers are also stylish accent pieces that add ambiance to a room.Â
Get over 100+ diffuser blend recipes to try here.Â
2. DIY Reed Diffuser
Although I prefer ultrasonic diffusers, reed diffusers also have a place in my home. They are great for smaller spaces where you might not have room for an ultrasonic diffuser. Use a reed diffuser in a hallway, on shelves & mantles, or even in a pantry.Â
A reed diffuser emits the aroma of essential oils into the air. It does the same job as an ultrasonic diffuser, just on a smaller scale. The carrier oil and essential oils travel up the raw wood stick to give off a scent.Â
Find out how to make a DIY reed diffuser for essential oils.Â
3. Succulent Diffuser
Like ultrasonic diffusers and reed diffusers, succulent diffusers can add fragrance to the air. Combine your love of plants and essential oils with a decorative, functional diffuser.Â
A succulent diffuser is a unique planter filled with a variety of succulent-type plants. It becomes a diffuser when you add lava rocks (or moss) to the soil. Lava rocks are porous stones that will absorb the essential oils and emit the aroma.Â
Find out how to make a succulent diffuser here.Â
4. Deodorizing Disks
One of the stinkiest areas in a home is the trash cans. This simple recipe for deodorizing disks can be placed in any tight area that stinks. Keep smells at bay and add fragrance to tight spots.Â
The baking soda in this recipe acts to naturally neutralize odors. The combination of Lavender and Lemon brings a bright and fresh herbal scent. Plus, there is one secret ingredient.Â
Learn how to make deodorizing disks and never miss a stinky spot.Â
5. Homemade Candles
Candles aren’t just cozy accent pieces, they can also add a pleasant aroma to an area. A homemade candle can be made with a wax base, a wick, and essential oils for fragrance. The scent possibilities are endless!

6. Natural Air Freshener Spray
A quick spritz of a room spray can instantly add fragrance to the air. This easy DIY recipe is customizable with your favorite scents. Make a room spray to usher in spring, or to celebrate the holiday season.
Keep a bottle in every room and use it anytime your home needs a burst of freshness

7. Natural Household Cleaners
Cleaning your house can be a joy with fragrant homemade natural cleaners. Most store-bought cleaners have an off-putting scent that tries to mask stinky smells.Â
With natural cleansing properties, essential oils provide a simple yet powerful way to get things clean. Homemade cleaners can be used all over your home to cleanse and degrease even the dirtiest of areas.Â

8. DIY Diffuser Ornaments
You’ll love the portability of these homemade diffuser ornaments. They are most popular at Christmas, but you can make any generic shape to enjoy all year round. Add one to a doorknob, hang from the mantle, or decorate your tree for the holidays.Â
You can make a homemade diffuser ornament using a variety of ingredients including clay, baking soda, and cornstarch. Add essential oils to the ornament for a festive burst of fragrance to enjoy anywhere.Â

DIY Reed Diffuser for Essential Oils
Make a DIY Reed Diffuser for your home and enjoy your favorite fragrances in hard-to-reach places. With just a few ingredients and supplies, you can make a decorative air freshener and the scent possibilities are endless. Here’s how to make a reed diffuser for essential oils.Â
If you love having your home smell fresh and clean, try a Homemade Reed Diffuser as an alternative to candles and air fresheners. Put one in every room for a whiff of aromatherapy to enjoy all day long!Â
I used to love potpourri as a child. A beautiful bowl filled with various scented objects was a staple in most guest bathrooms. It was not something we ever had in our home, so I considered it to be a fancy, luxury item.Â
Once I learned more about artificial fragrances, I realized my mom had made the right choice by skimping on potpourri. Most store-bought potpourri is coated with toxic dyes and a mixture of artificial fragrances. Artificial fragrances can contribute to indoor air pollution and have negative health effects such as asthma and allergies.Â
So now I skip potpourri, plug-ins, and candles and opt for more natural options to freshen my home. I love using a reed diffuser in the bathroom as both a decorative item and as a way to add fragrance.
How does a Reed Diffuser WorkÂ
A reed diffuser emits the aroma of essential oils into the air. It does the same job as an ultrasonic diffuser, just on a smaller scale. The carrier oil and essential oils travel up the raw wood stick to give off a fragrance. You can add more essential oils to intensify the aroma. The sticks need to be replaced once they are entirely saturated. Reed diffusers work best in small spaces.
How to Make a DIY Reed Diffuser
First, find a vase for your reed diffuser. You can use any vase but ideally, choose one with a narrow opening at the top. This will slow the evaporation and help the scent last longer.Â
Materials Needed
Glass vase with a narrow opening
ÂĽ cup of carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, apricot, or safflower oil
5-6 reed sticks per vase
25-30 drops essential oil of your choice
Directions
Add carrier oil to the bottom of the vase
Mix in selected essential oils and swirl to combine
Add wood sticks and allow them to become fully saturated
Flip the sticks over in the vase. Replace about once a week or whenever you change the scent
Essential Oils to Add to a Reed Diffuser
You can add any of your favorite diffuser blends to a reed diffuser. These are some of my favorite combinations:Â
10 drops Vanilla + 10 drops Cedarwood + 10 drops LavenderÂ
15 drops Eucalyptus + 15 drops Lime
10 drops Bergamot + 10 drops Lemon + 10 drops Rosemary
10 drops Cinnamon Bark + 10 drops Orange + 10 drops Thieves
15 drops Joy + 15 drops Orange
15 drops Ylang Ylang + 15 drops Grapefruit
15 drops Vanilla + 15 drops Christmas Spirit

All About Black Pepper Essential Oil
Resembling the spicy scent of freshly cracked peppercorns, black pepper essential oil will add some heat to your favorite diffuser blends. Add Black Pepper Vitality to cooking recipes for an extra zing of flavor. Black pepper is energizing, encouraging, and motivating when inhaled and applied topically. Read all about Black Pepper below.Â
Botanical Name
Piper nigrum
Botanical Family
Piperaceae
Common Names
Pipor
Piper
Pipalli
Long pepper
Historical Uses
Black pepper has a long history, both as a seasoning and as a medicine. Its earliest uses can be traced back to the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians as early as the fourth century BC. Black peppercorns were found in the nostrils of mummified remains in Egypt. Pepper was carried by Buddhist monks to be used as a medicine on their travels.Â
In ancient times, peppercorns were so valuable they were known as “black gold” and often used as currency. Pepper would dominate the spice trade in Europe and India for centuries. Today, pepper makes up one-fifth of the world’s spice sales.Â
Fun Facts
Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices in all types of cuisines
Black peppercorns come from boiling and drying the unripe drupes of the pepper plant. The heat causes the cell wall to rupture and turn brown. The peppercorns are then dried in the sun until the skin around the pepper seed turns black
There are multiple variants of peppercorns including black, white, green, and pink. Â
Aroma and Tips for Blending
Black pepper essential oil is steam distilled from the fruit of the pepper plant. It has a warm, pungent, spicy aroma that resembles freshly cracked pepper.Â
Black pepper blends well with most essential oils including lavender, ginger, cardamom, clary sage, and lemon. It is considered a middle note when blending with other oils. Black pepper helps meld together the scents in a blend.Â
Black pepper is best diffused with other essential oils rather than solo. It is much more potent than traditional cracked pepper. Start with a toothpick swirl and build on that amount until you reach the desired aroma when diffusing.Â
Benefits and Uses for Black Pepper Essential Oil
When taken internally, black pepper may support a healthy circulatory system and aid in digestion
Black pepper is a good source of antioxidantsÂ
Incorporate Black Pepper Vitality into your favorite cooking recipes for a more intense flavor
Take Black Pepper Vitality daily in a vegetable capsule to support a healthy weight

I have a love-hate relationship with Back to School. On one hand, it’s nice to get back to a regular routine and structure. Summer can get monotonous. A new school year brings new experiences and new friends. It’s also exciting (for kids at least) to shop for new clothes and school supplies.Â
As summer comes to an end it’s back to early mornings, busy afternoons, and hectic evenings. Once school starts, we tend to spend less time together as a family. It’s also a sad reminder that we are one year closer to our babies leaving the nest. I get all the feels on the first day of school!Â
Essential oils can make going back to school easier! Here are the Best Essential Oils for School:Â
Peppermint ~ energyÂ
Rosemary ~ mental focus

If you are doing school at home, keep the diffuser going with a focus blend to keep everyone on task. Once school is done and the kids are home, mix up a diffuser blend to help them wind down and get homework done.Â

Mermaid Hair Spray
I picture mermaids with long, beachy windblown locks that look effortlessly beautiful. Mermaid hair, don’t care as they say. This Homemade Mermaid Hair Spray supports stronger, longer, and healthier hair. Your hair will look healthy and natural with a mermaid vibe!
I’ve always had thick hair that was the envy of my three sisters. When I had my daughter, her hair did not disappoint. Not only is her hair thicker than mine, but it’s also wild and curly. She constantly gets compliments on her hair.Â
I struggled with caring for her hair the first few years. It didn’t have the same texture as mine, and sometimes brushing it was a nightmare. I knew that any product I used on her hair would need to be free of parabens, surfactants, and synthetic fragrances.Â
I turned to essential oils and homemade recipes to keep her hair healthy, and also to keep her safe from unwanted chemicals. It took me some time to find the right balance that worked for her unique head of hair. A quality shampoo & conditioner, detangler, and a wet brush worked like magic along with this essential oil mermaid hair spray recipe.Â
This Homemade Mermaid Hair Spay uses a combination of essential oils that promote hair growth, balance oil, and restore moisture.Â
Best Essential Oils for Healthy Hair
chamomile
cedarwood
clary sage
eucalyptus
geranium
jasmine
lavender
lemongrass
peppermint
rose
rosemary
sandalwood
tea tree
ylang-ylang
Mermaid Hair Spray Ingredients
Rosemary essential oil improves circulation which can stimulate hair growth. It may also help a dry or itchy scalpÂ
Lavender essential oil reduces hair loss, thinning, and breakage by conditioning hair follicles and reducing bacteria
Cedarwood has similar benefits to rosemary and lavender. It is a wonderful choice to promote thick and healthy hair
Tea Tree has so many uses, and it can even benefit your hair. Tea Tree supports hair growth by clearing your follicles and moisturizing your scalp
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Witch Hazel acts as a base in this recipe and helps the essential oils homogenize. It can stimulate blood flow in the scalp area and reduce build-up and flakes. Use alcohol-free witch hazel to avoid drying out the hair
DIY Mermaid Hair Spray Recipe
Ingredients
15 drops Rosemary (where to buy)Â
15 drops Lavender (where to buy)
15 drops Cedarwood (where to buy)Â
15 drops Tea Tree (where to buy)Â
witch hazel
4-oz glass spray bottle
Directions
Using a funnel, add essential oils to a 4-oz glass spray bottle. Fill to the top with witch hazel. Swirl to combine. Store in a cool and dark place for up to 6 months.Â
Notes and Substitutions
A carrier oil is optional in this recipe, but if your hair needs extra moisture you can add a teaspoon of argan oil for an added benefit.
You can substitute frankincense, clary sage, or geranium in this recipe for any of the essential oils.
How to Use Mermaid Hair Spray
Spray generously onto the roots of your hair and gently massage it into the scalp. Lift up bottom sections and spray onto roots. Add a few sprays to the ends if hair seems dry or in between cuts.Â
You can use this spray on wet or dry hair. I like to use it after a shower when my hair is damp, but not fully dry. Use daily for best results.

How to Stay Safe Using Essential Oils in the Sun
One of life’s greatest pleasures is soaking up the sun outdoors. If you regularly use essential oils and spend time in the sunshine, you run the risk of irritating or even burning your skin. Some essential oils can cause photosensitivity. Stay sun safe! Find out How to Stay Safe Using Essential Oils in the Sun.Â
One of my all-time favorite essential oil blends to use is stress away. I keep a roller bottle in my purse or pool bag at all times. If I’m out in public I often pull it out of my bag almost unconsciously and apply it to my wrists and forearms.
I once made the mistake of applying a generous amount of stress away to my forearms and spending some time sitting in the sun at the park. The next day I had a red mark that resembled a sunburn, exactly where I had applied the oil. Lesson learned.Â
Stress Away contains lime essential oil, which is phototoxic. If you try to avoid citrus oils when in the sun, be sure the essential oil blends you apply are safe in the sunshine.Â
Which Essential Oils are Photosensitive?Â
Essential oils that are cold-pressed, like citrus oils, are photosensitive. They contain unique compounds called furanocoumarins that increase UV sensitivity.Â
Photosensitive essential oils can cause chemically induced skin irritation when the skin is exposed to UV rays, similar to a sunburn. This also applies to tanning beds. The sun and photosensitive essential oils don’t mix!Â
Here is a list of photosensitive essential oils that you need to avoid when directly in the sun. Avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours with the following essential oil singles:Â
Angelica
Cedarwood
Cinnamon Bark
Clary Sage
Ginger
Grapefruit
Jade Lemon
Lemon
Neroli
Ocotea
Patchouli
Tangerine
Essential oil blends that contain one or more of the essential oil listed above should also be avoided for at least 12 hours:Â
Abundance
Acceptance
Australian Blue
Awaken
Brain Power
Build your Dream
Celebration
Christmas Spirit
Clarity
Common Sense
Deep Relief Roll-on
DiGize
Dragon Time
Dream Catcher
Egyptian Gold
Excite
Forgiveness
Gentle Baby
Joy
Peace & Calming
Stress Away
Thieves
*for a full list of photosensitive blends, see the graphic below.Â
Avoid the sun for 24 hours after using:Â
Citrus Fresh
Live with Passion
Avoid the sun for 48 after applying:
Bergamot
Lime
Orange
Which Essential Oils are Safe to Use in the Sun?Â
The majority of photosensitive essential oils come from citrus fruits, making them easy to remember. However, there are other oils that can be phototoxic. Paying close attention to labels is the best way to protect yourself from the sun when using essential oils.Â
Young Living labels all of their essential oil bottles with usage directions. If an oil may cause photosensitivity, it will be listed there. If the label does not mention photosensitivity, you can assume it is safe to apply and spend time in the sun.Â
Some popular essential oils that are considered sun-safe include:Â
Eucalyptus
Frankincense
Geranium
Lavender
Lemongrass
Peppermint
Pine
Purification
Palmarosa
Rosemary
Tea Tree
Ylang Ylang
How to Stay Safe Using Essential Oils in the Sun
Essential oils are a wonderful addition to daily life, especially in the summertime. There are steps you can take to stay sun-safe when enjoying an essential oil lifestyle:Â
1. Only use photosensitive essential oils in the evening or at bedtimeÂ
Peace & Calming is one of my family’s favorite essential oils to apply at bedtime. Peace & Calming is a photosensitive oil due to the orange and tangerine in the blend, both of which should be avoided in the sun. Although I enjoy using this oil topically, it is also great in a diffuser with no added risk.Â
2. Follow the directions on the label
It can be hard to memorize every single photosensitive essential oil. If you are new to oils, or just need a reminder, the label on each bottle of oil will guide you.Â
3. Be mindful of the essential oils you apply each day
Sometimes we hastily apply our favorite essential oils in the morning and go on with our day. In the summer, this can be problematic. Apply oils with intention and purpose when the sun is shining. If you do experience irritation after sun exposure, get relief with this Soothing After Sun Spray.Â
4. Cover Up
If you decide to use essential oils in the sun, wear clothing over the exposed area. Apply oils to the back or lower chest to be on the safe side. If you regularly add essential oils to your beauty routine, wear a hat, sunscreen, and stay in the shade.Â

11 Simple Diffuser Bomb Recipes
Deciding on a diffuser blend can be difficult. It can be influenced by how you are feeling that day, the season, or even by what oils you have on hand. Here are 11 Simple Diffuser Bomb Recipes you can make in advance to save time, and simplify your oil life. Keep your favorite blend next to your diffuser so you can enjoy the aroma of essential oils faster!
Every day I set the intention to diffuse essential oils. Unfortunately, there are those days where the diffuser never even gets turned on. On super busy days I don’t always take the time to mix up a blend and get my diffuser going.Â
Sometimes I can’t find the oil that I’m looking for (learn my tips and tricks for organizing essential oils). Other days, I overthink what to diffuse, I get sidetracked, and no oils make it into the diffuser. Fail.Â
Diffuser bombs make it so easy to enjoy the blends you love, without the added time of mixing and blending oils.
What is a Diffuser Bomb?Â
A diffuser bomb is a pre-mixed blend of essential oils. You simply combine your favorite oils into a glass bottle with a dropper lid. When you are ready to start your diffuser you only have to reach for one bottle to enjoy your favorite blend. No more searching for oil bottles or struggling to create a unique diffuser blend on the fly.Â
How to make a Diffuser Bomb
The first step in making a diffuser bomb is choosing the perfect essential oils to add to your blend. I like to choose everyday essential oils that are in my budget. Energizing blends are my go-to in the morning and relaxing blends in the evening.Â
Once you’ve selected the oils, add them directly to the bottle with a funnel. You will not add a carrier oil to the mixture since it is going directly into the diffuser. A 10ml bottle holds about 120-150 drops of oil. It’s the perfect size if you don’t want to drain your oil stash all at once.Â
When you are ready to start diffusing, gently swirl the oils together to recombine. Add 8-10 drops to your diffuser and start it up. A 10ml bottle should last through about twelve diffuser cycles. You can also reuse a 15ml oil bottle for these recipes, just increase the drops by 20 for each oil.Â

Making homemade roller blends is a wonderful way to personalize your essential oil experience while also creating fragrances tailored to your liking. DIY roller blends are also great for when you want to target and support a body system with a specific combination of oils.Â

Diffuser Recipes for Sleep
Sleep doesn’t come naturally to all people. Our bodies and minds function at their best after a good night’s rest, but falling asleep and staying asleep is another story. Essential oils can help you relax, put aside the worries of the day, and calm your mind. Add these diffuser recipes for sleep to your nighttime routine, and settle into a more peaceful sleep.  Â
My children have been horrible sleepers since birth. It is one of the reasons I initially turned to essential oils. Diffusing essential oils and applying them topically has been a huge part of our nighttime routine. Every night we get the diffuser going with a sleepytime blend, rub their little toes with their favorite oils, add a quick spritz of a goodnight spray, and off to dreamland they go.Â
Aromatherapy is frequently associated with relaxation. Most essential oil users turn to aromatherapy to increase or improve sleep. Essential oils contain powerful constituents that can lower blood pressure and heart rate.
Essential oils such as lavender calm the central nervous system and prepare the body for sleep. Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils for sleep. It is an excellent remedy for improving sleep quality and duration. Â
When choosing essential oils to use before bed, select oils that help calm and relax you. Energizing essential oils like peppermint and rosemary may have an opposite effect and may make falling asleep more difficult.Â
