I was fortunate to speak with @thegetty recently as part of the #GettyInspired initiative. We spoke about open access, the future of art history, and of course, public executions in the Baroque period. Take a look at my #GettyInspired profile here, and read our full conversation, “For Art History, Generosity Is the Real Power of the Internet,” in the Getty Iris.

Hans Makart, Die Falknerin, 1880.
Makart paints a double portrait here: the woman as falconer, but also the woman herself as a bird of prey alongside her animal counter-part, connoted by the woman’s dress and pose reflecting that of the falcon. This falls in line with the fin-de-siecle concern over the femme fatale.

FLUORITE with PHANTOMS
Wonderful specimen of intergrown Fluorite crystals with phantoms inside the cubes. The crystals are very sharp, lustrous, glassy and highly transparent. The real beauty in this specimen is the phantoms. The predominant color is green combined with intense purple phantoms at the corners. Some black dendrites enrich the display.
