I really think we need to stop looking at /solidarity/ as an innate process where oppressed communities NATURALLY align with other oppressed communities and instead look at solidarity as an OVERTLY coalitionary tactic, one that is borne through learning and compassion

Little noticed, Filipino Americans are dying of COVID-19 at an alarming rate
For a variety of reasons, Filipino Americans have been hit hard by the novel coronavirus. People with roots in the Philippines account for about one-quarter of the Asian Americans in California, yet data compiled by The Times show that Filipino Americans account for at least 35% of COVID-19 deaths in the state’s Asian population.
More research needs to be done to address the disparities within the Asian American community. A research brief published on Health Affairs reported that Asian Americans appeared to have a fatality rate from COVID-19 four times higher than that of the overall population.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, i know it’s hard for a lot of Italian and Irish people to wrap their head around because y'all just started being white in the 1940s but y'all do benefit from white privilege.

love living in a country where sites of archaeological and cultural significance that date back tens of thousands of years are of less historical importance than a bunch of feral horses

Cambodians use pardons to beat Trump admin’s deportation orders
At least 110 Cambodians have already been deported in 2018, said an ICE spokesperson. It’s the highest number in at least 15 years — as far back as deportation data is publicly available. It’s more than triple the number deported in 2017, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).
The push to deport Cambodians began under President Barack Obama, leading to public outcry and grassroots organizing in the Cambodian community in 2016. It has accelerated since the start of the Trump administration.

Asian Men Allegedly As‌sa‌ult‌e‌d by Racist Woman Yelling ‘Ignorant G‌**ks’ in Philadelphia
Dương Nghệ Lý detailed his encounter in a Facebook post. Reportedly, Lý and his friend were berated by ra‌cis‌t speech when he did not yield to a woman backing out of a spot.
Lý claims that another Caucasian man who “he knew her” told the pair to leave. After telling him that she was at fault, he disregarded their words and kept telling them they were blocking traffic.
Another man came over and told them to “sh‌u‌t the f‌u‌c‌k up” and claimed that he didn’t see her a‌ssa‌ulti‌n‌g them.

Listen I know that it’s the 2018-way to immediately compare every single American government corruption to the Nazis but uh, you actually don’t need to do an international comparison when trying to show the horrors of separating children from their families and putting them in “camps”.
Turns out America did that too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The above are pictures from Japanese Internment Camps in WWII, located right here in America. More info on the subject: x )
In fact, they did it more than once:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The above are pictures of German-Americans who were also detained in American states. More info: x )
In fact, they did it a lot:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The above are photos from the American Native-American “boarding schools” which separated Native American children from their families so that they could be brainwashed into embracing the white “Christian” American way. More info: x )
So when you see these appalling images in the news:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
don’t start comparing America to WWII Germany.
Start comparing America to America.
Because we’ve always done this and, as long as we can get away with it, we always will.

I’m gonna talk about adversity for one second.
No, never mind, I’ll go straight to the point.
If I had never experienced actual racism in my life, I would’ve never woken up. I would’ve never started being proud of my ethnic roots if no one had ever made fun of me, my accent, my skin color, my name, the food I grew up eating, etc… I would’ve never pushed through learning more about Filipinos and our histories in this country had I never experienced absolutely despicable bigoted shit simply because of the color of my skin.
If I never moved to the USA and saw how other races treat and PERCEIVE people of the same ethnic background as me, I seriously would still be the same colonized-mind.
And tbh, I don’t know how I feel about that. That I had to go through traumatizing series of events from age 13 to now in order to realize that I need to love myself and my roots… To have grown up with such a serious case of colonial mentality that the only way for me to start loving myself and my roots was to be exposed to folks who hate me and my kind.

Native cultures are not interchangeable.
Every single Native culture is distinct and unique, though many share similarities, and lumping them together is ridiculous. And while some practices are pan-Indian, the vast majority are not.
Kokopelli isn’t “Native American,” He’s Hopi.
Dreamcatchers aren’t “Native American,” they’re Ojibwe.
War bonnets aren’t “Native American,” they’re Plains Indian.
Wendigoag aren’t “Native American,” they’re Algonquian.
Totem poles aren’t “Native American,” they’re Northwest Coastal Indian.
Skinwalkers aren’t “Native American,” they’re Navajo.
Stop homogenizing our cultures. Every Native culture is beautiful and unique and deserves to be treated that way.

Horrified to hear about the shooting in Pittsburgh. The only thing I have to say is that despite being less than 2% of the population, 72% of all religious hate crimes in the US are antisemitic (and that’s ignoring the ethnic aspect of antisemitism). It’s getting tiring to be so angry all the time.

Teacher Fired Over Anti-Asian Racism Says “I don’t believe East Asians can be subject to racism.”
It all started when a 10-year-old Asian girl was suspended after she brought hair sticks to her school because they were seen as weapons. Her mother @LovelyLearynn tweeted out that her daughter faced discrimination from Ms. Shonterikka Williams, who referred to the hair sticks as “oriental things.”
Additionally, a few weeks back Ms. Shonterikka Williams asked her students to draw a self-portrait. When @LovelyLearynn’s daughter received her self-portrait back from Ms. Shonterikka Williams, the drawing had a note that read, “Okay, but a little less ch*nky!”
