The Washington post published an op-Ed today on the masters and the re-recordings that I think got at this very well, fundamentally it’s the connection.
it is. taylor (by way of her work, not as in the close personal friend way) has been there for me when no one else has. this is true of millions upon millions of people around the world. she has nurtured and appreciated that instead of eschewing it. and in turn, we repay her in spades. she gets so much back from us feeling connected to her work and moved by what she puts into the world. and that propels her to do more and try more and achieve more and ultimately also pay for more. but it’s also why putting money at the center of every conversation about her as so many do lately is so off-putting to so many fans, because it doesn’t really feel like it has ever been about that on either side #ToMe

If I ask you what reputation is all about and you tell me “being in your bad bitch era” I am sending you to the moon and you have to wait to listen to reputation (taylor’s version) until you *actually* understand what that album is about.

Joe kind of perfectly embodies the modern “feminist” man. He thinks because he’s sensitive, it means he’s evolved. But really he is like every other man and being with a woman who is more successful and more beloved than him makes him feel insecure and small.
not to make this a whole meta thing, but this is why the smallest man who ever lived is about both of them too. they hung an image of her on their wall, stabbed her with their pushpins, and feigned superiority for deigning to place a woman higher than them…but all the while, they’re refusing to actually let her be above them re: their career. they still need to be the Man. they still feel insecure in comparison. and they’ll stab her with their pushpins to keep her static and frozen and hung where she belongs - above them in a way that doesn’t really matter.

I really like to mention the change in taylor's lyrics throughout the relationship, in the rep, she mentions the insecurity of there being other people wanting him, in Lover she blames herself and he blames her anxiety for a situation that he says she misinterpreted and she accepts that blame and promises to improve, in folklore and evermore she brings betrayal as a very present theme and assumes that something happened and upset her but uses characters to tell this story, midnights she already mentions that something happened in a temporary way but prefers to focus on fixing this, in ttpd she no longer has any doubts that there are other people, she really affirms the presence of another woman
YES YES YES i love you for tracing this out and how the idea of trust changed

I think she might still believe (or at least write about) fate to some degree because she’s a romantic, but I think her belief in the concept of fate has changed. She framed her relationship with Joe as a reward for enduring a bad time, and I don’t think she sees life in that way at all anymore. I also think with travis, it’s the first time in over a decade someone pursued her with clear and direct intentions and they didn’t need to fight against xyz to be together. I always found it interesting how much she focused on how her and joe got together and why she kept revisiting that. I think it’s because she saw it as this really unlikely thing that ended up happening because of the power of love (lol I don’t know how else to phrase that) and that reinforced her fatalistic view of love. She wrote about Jake and Harry in the same way, except it didn’t work out, she couldn’t overcome xyz. It seems with her and travis there was no xyz that needed to be overcome.
Idk if that makes sense. But basically, so many Joe songs were like “we weren’t supposed to be together but we fought the cosmos and gods and now we are” and I wonder if TS12 will have an opposite approach and reflect on how easy and natural it was getting together and meshing each other in all aspects of the other’s life.
it took me a while to realize how she saw joe as the "reward" for all the bad in her life, but i really think that's critical to understanding how that all turned out. "at least i did one thing right" "my eternal consolation prize" - even calling him a trophy, like all the suffering led her there.
i think you are right on the money for how things with travis will be described! and i think we'll get a lot of songs about the future, which (correct me if i'm wrong) we haven't gotten much of before, because her music has focused so much on the past. we get glimpses of "give you a child" and "dreamscapes on the wall," but i feel like we'll get more sold references to the future (not just babies and marriage, either)!

“we judged ttpd too quickly!” “ttpd was sooo underrated when it came out!!” “ttpd really grew on me” skill issue. i knew ttpd was a top tier album by 12:01 AM on april 19 2024 so don’t assume that your inability to recognize greatness is universal
