12 Natural Ways for students to Improve Your Memory
1. Eat Less Added Sugar
Research has shown that people who regularly consume lots of added sugar may have poorer memories and lower brain volumes than those who consume less sugar.
2. Make Time for Meditation
Meditation isn’t just good for your body — it’s also good for your brain. Research suggests meditation may increase grey matter in the brain and improve spatial working memory.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity is a risk factor for cognitive decline. Maintaining a body mass index within the normal range may help you avoid a host of issues associated with obesity, including a poorer memory.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Studies have consistently associated sufficient sleep with better memory performance. Sleep helps consolidate memories. You’re also likely to perform better on memory tests if you’re well-rested than if you’re sleep-deprived.
5. Practice Mindfulness
Practising mindfulness techniques has been associated with increased memory performance. Mindfulness is also linked to reduced age-related cognitive decline.
6. Train Your Brain
Games that challenge your brain may help you strengthen your memory and may even reduce the risk of dementia.
7. Cut Down on Refined Carbs
Like added sugar, refined carbohydrates lead to a spike in blood sugar levels, which can damage your brain over time. Diets high in refined carbs have been associated with dementia, cognitive decline and reduced brain function.
8. Get Your Vitamin D Levels Tested
Vitamin-D deficiency is very common, especially in colder climates, and has been associated with age-related cognitive decline and dementia. If you think you might have low levels of vitamin D, ask your doctor for a blood test.
9. Exercise More
Exercise brings incredible benefits for your whole body, including your brain. Even moderate exercise for short periods has been shown to improve cognitive performance, including memory, across all age groups.
10. Choose Anti-Inflammatory Foods
Anti-inflammatory foods are great for your brain, especially berries and other foods that are high in antioxidants. To incorporate more anti-inflammatory foods into your diet, you can’t go wrong by consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables.
11. Consider Curcumin
Curcumin is a potent antioxidant. Animal studies have shown it reduces inflammation and amyloid plaques in the brain. However, more research in humans is needed.
12. Add Some Cocoa to Your Diet
Cocoa is high in antioxidants that may help improve memory performance. Make sure to choose dark chocolate with 70% cacao or higher so you get a concentrated dose of antioxidants. Read the full article

IITs ranked number 3 in the world - Expert Report

LONDON: The IITs have been placed number three in global rankings of the world's 100 best technology universities, exactly one week after they ignominiously slid several notches down another authoritative league table tracking the overall excellence of 100 institutions. The times Higher Education Supplement's listing of 100 top technology universities published on Friday ranked the IITs just behind MIT and California University, Berkeley. It also placed IIMs at number 68, sandwiched between Hong Kong University and Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Martin Ince of THES told TOI the new tech survey "shows academic opinion about the top places for science and engineering and puts IIT ahead of Imperial College, London", which comes in at number four. The survey is a subset of the main data collated by THES for last week's overall excellence rankings. Education experts said Friday's rankings of technology and science institutes will be a balm for the bruised IITs. Last week's THES overall global excellence rankings placed them at number 57 of the top 100, seven notches lower than in 2005. Ince said the newest tech table emerged from THES's "total universe" of 3,703 academics, who had been asked to rate universities in their area of specialization. Even though the technology education sector is bursting with big names, such as Stanford and Cambridge, the IITs held their own. But they featured rather lower at number 33 when the world's 100 best science universities were ranked by THES. On the science league table, IITs squeezed in behind China University of Science and Technology and just ahead of Michigan University. Cambridge leads the table. Read the full article

Motivation to study – Tips for students

“Motivation”, not just a word but a bulk of good moments stored inside. You can stay sad for the whole day just because you want to, but once you make yourself ready to smile, of course, you are going to smile for long. What is needed is the motivation to hold you and say” you can do it”. When preparing for competitive exams, the full year needs dedication, efforts, and a positive attitude to make things possible. We have seen students getting fed up, losing patience, and then ending up to failure. It’s tough to stay motivated for the whole of the year and concentrate on yourself and your preparation. Some tips that are really going to help you out in staying refreshed and motivated – Stop getting negative thoughts You might think I can do it, or I cannot even cross the bridge, there are many thoughts prevailing while you are preparing for the whole year. But just one important task you need to do is to think less and start working more. You cannot ignore the coming tough days, but you can hold your confidence and stay firm to face that. When we are talking about competition, the first step is to end up thinking “if or but”, just get ready and gear up your routine and let the wheels run smoothly with time. Never skip giving time to your hobby Students think they need to forget their hobbies and then only they can plan their studies. But we never recommend children to do so. Hobbies are the part of your enjoyment, interest and that makes you happy, someone hour a day can be given to your any kind of hob. That will make you boost up and energize your mood, after that one hour you can get back to your studies. Schedule your study time For having everything positive, all you need is to manage time. Without the right time management, nothing could be achieved. So, without delay go and plan your routine and stick to it till the end, certainly you won’t be getting time to get negative thoughts or feel demotivated. Knowledge is the best thing you are going to gain within your fixed timetable. Pay attention to classes I have seen most of students are distracted in classes whatever the reason may be. If you pay attention to the class, half of the study is done. Try to comprehend whatever the professor/teacher trying to explain. I know it’s difficult to grasp everything taught in class. But you need to be motivated to get the maximum from classes. Pick up important points, notes from the lectures and you are on your way to fare well in the exams. Ignore Comparisons The worst part is the comparison you do it or someone else does, the thing is same- you end up getting depressed and stressed. Never ever compare yourself with someone else, the other one might take 2 hours to learn and you might need 4 instead, both have variant calibre, so stop balancing each other on the same scale. Using Rajasthani clay, IIT Jodhpur students develop a method to reduce vehicular pollution

A team from IIT-Jodhpur created it using clay. The clay acts as an oxygen reservoir and makes the pollutants less harmful, the researcher said. A catalytic converter is a device which is fitted to a vehicle's exhaust to reduce the pollutants coming from it. A team from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur’s chemistry department has developed a catalytic converter for cars using Rajasthani clay which will be cheaper and more effective in reducing pollution, a professor claimed on Monday. A catalytic converter is a device which is fitted to a vehicle’s exhaust to reduce the pollutants coming from it. Rakesh K Sharma, an IIT Jodhpur professor who led the team, said the catalytic converter was developed by extracting Iron-Nickel-Cobalt nanoparticles from Rajasthani clay. The clay acts as an oxygen reservoir and makes the pollutants less harmful, he said. “The catalytic converters in use have expensive rare earth elements — Palladium and Cerium — in them and their life span is about 10 years against an approximate 15-year life of a four wheeler,” Sharma said. “We had three challenges — a reduction of temperature, replacement of Palladium and Cerium and redesigning the convertor”, the professor said, adding that Rajasthani clay turned out to be a perfect solution. Why choose classroom coaching over online coaching for JEE exam

Introduction JEE is one of those exams that can easily intimidate a student. Being one of the toughest to be conducted in India, JEE gives entry to the coveted field of engineering. Lakhs and lakhs of students all over the country spend approximately two years, if not more, in preparing for this examination. However, only a few qualify. While there are reasons why they qualify while the others do not, a lot of it rests with the Institute that is coaching them. In India, organizations preparing students for JEE are plenty, and they are still mushrooming in almost all corners of the country. These classes are no longer restricted to taking place in physical classrooms. A lot of them have emerged as online tutorials. Classroom coaching: Classroom coaching is more like the traditional form of teaching students. Here, the Institute in question asks its students to visit a designated branch at regular intervals. There are teachers and other employees who train the students to take the examination. These coaching Institutions have emerged as a corollary to the schools. And students flock to them to get into their dream college. Online coaching: Online coaching is the modernized version of the traditional classroom coaching. Sometimes, there are constraints that involve things like faculty, space and the lack of other essential resources. To start an institution in spite of these barriers, online teaching came into play. Of course, there are other reasons that go behind their establishment. Students often find it beneficial to opt for this method of learning over the traditional one. Benefits of classroom coaching over online coaching: Although virtual interaction is the trend of the hour, there are plenty of reasons why that should not extend to education. JEE is a building block of a student's career. There is no way that should be put to the stake to save an hour or two. Online coaching essentially aims at time management but it can seldom provide the quality of learning that a classroom can. And honestly, what is the point of saving so much time if the student does not get quality preparation? Better scope for interaction: With online coaching, everything happens through webinars or through some other tutorial windows. And this goes a long way to restrict interaction between the teacher and the student. However, in classrooms, no such constraints are seen. A student who has any doubts regarding the lesson being taught, can approach the teacher and ask for help at any point in time. This leaves room for better interaction, and hence, for better learning.Better problem solving: JEE is a tough nut to crack and that is mostly because of the kind of questions people face here. Preparing for these questions require a lot of practice and guidance. With online coaching, a one-to-one support system is difficult to create. However, when it comes to classrooms, it is of no big deal. Problem-solving and doubt clearing gets a lot easier here.Competitive environment: When a student is appearing for JEE, she is competing against the entire country to get through to her dream college. Hence, it is important to get accustomed to this competition. A classroom can give a student this advantage. Since she is learning with others who share her aim, she is bound to get more competitive. Conclusion Online coaching has advantages of its own. However, when compared to the benefits of classroom learning, they are not as crucial. It is necessary for a student to grasp her subject better and that can be done with ease when she is being tutored in a class full of students with a similar aim. Read the full article
