HARKONNEN
Dave Bautista plays “Beast” Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film release of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel Dune. Physically, Bautista certainly fits the bill. At a towering 6’4” and weighing in at 275 pounds can not only act, he is also a mixed martial-artist, bodybuilder and professional wrestler who can no doubt crush several Fremen with his bare hands.
In Dune, Rabban’s title is Count of Lankieveil and he is the nephew of the Siridar-Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and cousin of the na-baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. His reputation is one of cruelty, violence, and oppression. Rabban is sent by his uncle the Baron to rule Arrakis (Dune) as Caid (governor) where he is eventually killed in the Fremen revolt, along with his cousin and uncle.
Production stills show Bautista in a terrifying incarnation of Rabban, with a towering frame, predatory eyes and ghastly pale skin.
Bautista got his start in professional wrestling in the WWF in 2000 using the ring name Leviathan, then switching to WWE events under the name Deacon Batista in 2002. He then switched to the Raw brand being known simply as Batista. Batista’s career culminated at WrestleMania 21 where he won the World Heavyweight Championship. He then went on to defend his title several times, including against his infamous rival Triple H. Batista is currently ranked by the WWE as the second-best World Heavyweight Champion of all time.
Dave Bautista launched his acting career in television shows such as Smallville, Chuck, and Relative Strangers before landing his first movie role in Relative Strangers in 2006. He starred in other features such as House of the Rising Sun – where he won the award for Action Performer of the Year, The Scorpion King 3, The Man with the Iron Fists, Riddick and perhaps his most famous role as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel franchise.
Bautista went on to star in a number of Marvel features including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder appearing opposite Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman.
Bautista appeared in a notable performance as Sapper Morton in Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve’s release of Blade Runner 2049, playing opposite Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto. The 2021 release of Dune will mark the second time Villeneuve and Bautista work together.
