This 1996 hit by experimental rap duo OutKast features a reference to one of Shakespeare’s more obscure plays, the pastoral comedy As You Like It. In the fourth verse, Andre 3000 adds his own twist to the line “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are players”; Andre raps, “The world’s a stage and everybody’s got to play their part.” As musicians, OutKast quite literally perform roles on stage, adopting exaggerated personas to entertain their audience. Considering that the album on which this song appears is largely about feeling alienated from American culture, the lyric can be interpreted as Andre’s attempt to feel more connected to society via quoting Shakespeare, as well as an acknowledgment of the performative nature of celebrity. Yet it seems “ATLiens” is not a lamentation of the pressure to conform to the crowd’s expectations, but rather a spirited rejection of conventionality; Andre and Big Boi are crafting their own stage roles that embrace their unique authenticity. Wes Folkerth writes, “With Shakespeare’s help, ‘ATLiens’ send the message that everyone … can live their lives in a way that celebrates personal freedom and individuality” (260).

18 years ago today, we lost one of the most brilliant and influential human beings to ever grace this planet. And because of that, the world is a lot less brighter without him.
Still…King Shakur, your memory and legacy lives on through all of those whose lives you touched and continue to touch with your voice and spirit. Including myself. Thank you for continuing to inspire and motivate me. You will never ever be forgotten, I can promise you that. My future children will know your name and speak it with admiration and respect.
Rest In Love King.
We really do miss you ♥

The Ferguson City Council convened for the first time since Mike Brown’s death, and proved that they literally give no fucks about what the community has to say. Added to their vague, paltry proposed reforms, seems real change will have to come in Ferguson via the ballot box. I don’t care where you live folks— let this be a lesson in voting/participating in your local elections and government! #staywoke #farfromover
