Thinking about how Adam liked Gansey so much and enjoyed spending time with him SO much that he tramped around in the woods fruitlessly in search of magic he didn’t even believe in for EIGHTEEN months before anything supernatural even happened. Even though Ronan was actively hostile and jealous to him (which he’s described as “enduring” to be friends with Gansey 😭) and he was killing himself by working two jobs on top of school and never slept enough and hardly ever did anything for himself at all. Being friends with Gansey was the thing he chose for himself even though it made his other goals harder. Because he was so fond of him. Because he liked him and Gansey liked him back. Because Gansey is the first person to love him in a real way. My god.

If Elio comes out and has a soft opening weekend, what are we not going to do?

We’re not calling it a failure.

Since the COVID-19 lockdown ended in 2021, animated family films largely have smaller-than-expected opening weekends but INCREDIBLE staying power in theaters. We saw this with Elemental in 2023, which was labeled a bomb but made $496.4 million on a $200 million budget. It ended up being a sleeper hit.

Elio is an original animated movie starring a disabled Latino kid. It is directed by a Latino and two women, one of whom is Asian. Because of all these things, people are going to want to call it a failure as soon as possible. But pay attention to the facts, not whatever narrative is trying to be spun.

TL;DR - Don’t call Elio a failure if it opens to less money than expected. Wait to see how long it stays in theaters and ignore those who want it to fail because of their own prejudice.

I was struggling to come up with a good design for the series because I know how much it is cherished by Binarybookbinder, but I've also always wanted to play with the idea of a book cover design being one big illustration when lined up, so I came up with the idea of splitting Elspeth's face in half, with one cover being her face, and the second cover alluding to the Nightmare card kinda popping out of the frame

No Kings! Protest(6/14/25)

On Saturday June 14th, as tanks were rolling down the streets of DC for the Army's 250th Birthday, millions of people turned out into the streets for the No Kings! protests. The Ascendant Project took this as an opportunity to talk to the protesters to find out what motivated them to demonstrate and rally. We started off with a pre-game at Cafe Nola where we discussed what we were looking for in contrast to the Hands Off protests that occurred a few months prior. From there we went to the No Kings! protest in Mullinix Park, just off Carroll Creek in Frederick Maryland. We interviewed two people, an organizer of the protest and an attender. We had gotten their names, but as amateur as we are, we lost them. But they agreed to be interviewed and so their videos are below. After listening to the speakers, we went to South Mountain Creamery to discuss what we saw where we discussed the deep divisions within the Left as evidenced by the heckling of US Rep April McClain Delaney. The following day, Brian Smyers interviewed Desiree Abshire who also attended about her motivations for going, what she felt during, and the state of this nation as a whole. So please enjoy the pictures and perspectives. The audio quality will be strained at times because of the crowd chatter at the protest and restaurants, so forgive us.
