So this happened when I was about 6/7. We had recently moved to a new city and money was tight. I had no friends, school wasn’t starting for another month and essentially I had nothing to do. Being the child that I was, I asked my parents one day when we would get a T.V so I had something to do. My mum had to have the tough talk with me about how money was tight and we couldn’t afford one at the moment. Few days later, my dad returns from work in the evening having bought a T.V. I didn’t realise why that meant so much until I was much older but it’s something I have never forgotten. The way my dad loves - quietly and gently.

You know that Ada Limón poem where she’s like “i can’t help it i love the way men love”? my dad recently confessed to me that he became a shoemaker because they buried my grandma shoeless
