The worst thing ever about cell saga is the main theme of Gohan making peace with the fact that he has to kiss his childhood goodbye and be a man now. Obviously even before this he’s been fighting and doing crazy things no four to six year old should ever have to do, but there was always to him at least the impending sense that he didn’t have to do the winning. It was always in the back of his mind that even if he was beaten to the point of having his neck snapped his daddy was on his way to rescue him and save the day. But during Cell it’s different. When Goku takes him into the time chamber he enters looking like a child and exits looking physically more grown up than any 10/11 year old should look. His own mother doesn’t recognize him at first. Even Krillin and Yamcha make comments along the lines of “whoa is that really you Gohan?” and Gohan is so happy about this, because he finally looks strong, he finally can stand next to his father and really feel like he’s living up to the title of being his son. It’s unbelievably sad. He shaves off many of his childish habits like clinging to his father or calling Goku “daddy” and even when Goku springs it on him that /he/ has to be the one to defeat Cell and he’s the only one who can do it, he puts on his brave face and charges into battle even though he’s so scared and he has no idea what Goku is planning and he keeps thinking “maybe dad will save me maybe he’s trying to teach me something” but it’s really all up to him, and he’s the only one who can get himself and the rest of the world out of this. The most heartbreaking part of this entire ordeal is when Goku ends up having to sacrifice himself and Gohan’s “mature” facade breaks entirely and he breaks down crying and screaming for “daddy” like a boy his age should have been doing this whole time and you the viewer again realize just how young he is even if the show has been trying to make you forget about it all this time

Why Big Boss is (clearly) trans

—Written by a trans man who saw that bitch in MGS3 and immediately said "omg, this bitch is trans" and way too few people believed him, so here I am studying and explaining WHY I am right.

If you don't agree even after this very thought-out and obvious explaination, I DISOWN YOU!

Warnings: Based also on common tropes, vibes, symbolism, analogies, maybe stereotypes too and some USA trans-care-legality study on wikipedia because, quite honestly, I thought everyone arrived to the same immediate conclusion as me but apparently not.

ALSO, pardon my english, it's not my first language.

Also also I'm bad at writing essays and I feel like I'm writing obvious shit. Read 'till the end pls.

In my server I often call him Big Pussy. Because he very obviously has one. BUT I basically don't see his very hairy pussy around, so here I am!

First, here are the most basic and obvious answers to why he is undoubtly trans.

REASON N.1: I'm literally him and I am trans so he is too

A trans person sees him and relates = automatically trans, you can't argue with that.

REASON N.2: Fucking look at him

Ain't no way this bitch got a cock between those legs. I tried to force myself to imagine him with a banana and a pair of oranges, had the ick, so it's clearly WRONG.

You can argue he had a phalloplasty (the first bottom surgery for trans men was in 1946, which makes it possible canonically), but I personally can't see him with a dick, at all. He could easily have a t-dick though, since he's clearly taking Testosterone (HRT has been a thing WAY before then, but also not very easily accessible in the USA), but this is something I'll talk more about later on.

You might also argue "oh, but you didn't thought that Metal Gear MSX Big Boss is trans", which is true, I look at him and honestly did not get any trans vibes from him.

You would be correct and got me at the corner, if THIS BITCH DIDN'T EXIST:

Also because THIS BITCH here ⬇ *still does* have a cunt. You know, because it's always Naked Snake.

Now, after understanding the very obvious vibes that I'm confident all trans people will catch and see (please), now let's pass to the legality of trans people (Big Boss) in the USA during those years (and why is it plausible that he is, in fact, trans).

REASON N.3: He's literally USA's gratest hero's baby

Reminder that The Boss and Naked Snake firstly met some time around the 50s, which is important for this explaination!

While being trans wasn't technically illegal in the US, many other laws were used to target transgender individuals.

How did Jack avoid the Indecency Laws and have access to one of the few doctors who actually KNEW about the excistence of trans individuals and get T from them? Isn't it unrealistic? And how did he become a soldier if trans men were mostly left out from military training and serving (despite it NOT being illegal at the time)?

Mmmh, IDK, maybe because SHE WAS HIS "MOM"!?

I don't see any reason why she wouldn't give him access to HRT, protect him from dumb laws and allow him to become a soldier, also because "legally" his name is John Doe, a male name that surely hid him from HAVING to come out and face the consequences of being an openly trans individual in the US, in the military.

Basically: he's not openly a trans man, and he probably got HRT + documents change under The Boss' care, so no one knows. And it's important because connected to his name.

Why is his name so important? BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING DUMB!? So much that it has a fucking Reason N.X dedicated to it.

REASON N.4: John Fucking Doe, really!?

They could've literally named him anything, but no, let's call him "legally unknown and we don't have a name for you so here's a place holder".

I hope you're seeing my vision here, if not, here are two points that explains it in the calmest way possible.

The Boss: "Hey, I need to hide my son's transness. He needs to be as anonymous as possible and I need to get easy fake documents to get him in the military since in the 50s trans people can't change their legal documents ahahah. What name could I possibly ever use?"

This is a bit of a stretch, I know, but using "John Doe" for "unknown corpse's identities" makes me think about "dead names". Trans people refer to their birth names as dead names to say that their past identity, how they were always perceived and seen before their discovery, is dead, and therefore I can see this choice as (probably unintentionally) leading to a past self now gone, which is a very trans theme.

Lastly, while I now know that "Jack" truly is an affectionate nickname for "John" (kinda stupid, I gotta say), I firstly thought about Jack as another proof of his transness, and that I think could still be used to prove my point: Jack is his real, choosen name, but he couldn't get documents for it, so The Boss choose something that could easily be disguised as his 'actual' name. Basically, see point 1 and add the fact that The Boss knew Jack's choosen name is thankfully also a nickname for "John".

Now that you all understood that, legally and historically, it is possible for him to be trans, let's move on to tropes, possible stereotypes that hints more to his canonical transness.

REASON N.5: Autism (and something more)

He's autistic. I don't think I need to explain that, because that would make this a whole other type of essay, since there are WAY TOO MANY INSTANCES where he proved to be autistic, probably even more than the reasons why he's clearly trans.

So, unless you're blind and deaf, let's assume that we all know that he is autistc.

During my first psychological meeting to determine whether I'm trans or not, one of the first important questions were "are you autistic?", because, statistically, neurodivergent people are much more likely to be trans or have non-gender confirming tendencies.

I also saw once the headcanon, or canon possibility, of Big Boss having ASPD, a personality disorder. And while ASPD and being transexual doesn't have seemingly a direct correlation, having a Personality Disorders in general DO higher the chance of an individual to be trans.

REASON N.6: Bisex

Don't be like my classmate who said that there are no bisexual characters in MGS, only to stay quiet when I cited the box-sex moment between Kaz and Big Boss, thank you. Just like for his autism, I really don't think it's needed for me to say that he is bisexual.

Giving that for granted, there's actually no significant statistics that show that bisexuals are more likely to be trans, but there is a statistic that shows that TRANS people are more likely to be bisexual.

I know this is kind of not really proving that he is trans, only that, if he is trans, it's even more likely for him to be bi and not pan/omni/etc., but like, come on, the two things are clearly correlated.

REASON N.7-8: Mommy and Mentor issues

I am actually not finding statistics for this one?? So I guess it is only a niche stereotype, but it always were common in my personal groups and that's also why I saw The Boss and Jack and immediately thought "oh, yeah, their relationship makes sense since he's trans".

"Mommy issues" here is used much freely, since Jack doesn't have those (that we know of), BUT their relationship is undeniably unhealthy. And having unhealthy relationships with a (perceived) mother has always been a trans men stereotype in my net of friends.

What I found and I think mostly defines them is:

In order to explain this fully, since I personally haven't seen any post talking about The Boss and Jack's relationship specifically, it would take me a whole other essay, so I'll be criminally quick:

Both mother and son rely excessively on each other for emotional support => Jack clearly is dependent on The Boss, but The Boss too is attached to Jack way more than what a mentor/mom should be. She left the Cobra Unit die for him, she left him kill her, they spent 10 years REALYING on each other, and yes she called the whole Cobra Units "her children", yet it is plain obvious Jack is the one she keeps at his arm-reach. She calls a 29-fucking-years old (trans) man a "child".

Emotional and Psychological Impact => The only thing Jack doesn't have. Even if he DOES have many problems forming healthy relationships since her death.

Enmeshment can hinder a son's ability to develop a sense of self => He wears her bandana, he has her same c-section scar, his name (however not choosen) is Big BOSS, his grooming techniques are similar to what The Boss applied to him. I can go on.

Unhealthy dynamics can impact the son's ability to form healthy romantic relationships or friendships. => Do I even have to explain this?

Ugh, I should really make an essay about them, I love them. But anyways all of this to explain his issues with his "mom", but now I must remind you that THE BOSS ISN'T HIS MOM. Wow, shocking, I know. This connects with the other stereotype I always heard about, which is the attachment many abused LGBT+ kids form with a comprehensive teacher.

(Really no one ever heard of these stereotypes? Really?)

Now it is time for the last section! The symbolism!!!!!!

REASON N.9: Usage of female symbology

Hey, pst…do you all remember this scene? Where all the white flowers become red?

Congratulations! You just watched a symbolism that, back in the years where Red Riding Hood was firstly being spread among populations, was used to point out whether a girl was still a child (white = pure, innocent, young) or was losing her childish innocence to become a lady (red = menstruations).

I know it is used in this case to show Jack's own lost of innocence, in another sense (I doubt he got his first period at 29), yet to show this they still used a female-related symbolism.

REASON N.10: Usage of trans symbology

Butterflies are an important symbol in MGS3, showing Jack's bloom, change of self, leaving his old "child" self behind to become something different entirely.

You know for whom the butterfly symbol rapressents an important change from the past self?

I seriously don't know how they could make it more obvious than this.

So yeah. That's all! 10 reasons precisely, that's crazy. Explaining something obvious to me was also pretty hard, and I mostly focused on MGS3 Jack because he's my favourite Snake and also there was more material there. I'm sure I left some points out, I'm pretty confident of that, so don't be afraid to add stuff to this.
