warnings: swearing, blood, descriptive injury, loss of consciousness, y/n is a frigid bitch to everyone but ellie
When Tommy brings a young injured girl with flying fists and a brazen mouth back from his patrol, Ellie must get into the room where she was being confined and see what all the fuss is about. Three years later, the fuss seems to be the only person Ellie ever wants to see.

“Let me go!”
“Grab her ankles, Ill grab her arms.” Tommy instructed the man besides him.
“NO!” The girl protested, legs flailing and arms aimlessly thrown up in the air.
“Not gonna let you just bleed out in a hole and die out here kid.” Tommy grunted as he tried to calm her weak punches directed at him.
On a patrol which circled around the edge of the towns reach perimeter, Tommy had come across a young girl screaming and grunting in a hole in the snow.
Upon further examination, he realized the girl was bleeding aggressively from her abdomen, a sharp metal rod covered in blood rested besides her. Looking no older than fourteen, Tommy took it upon himself to bring her back to Jackson. Surprisingly to him, she didn’t exactly go willingly.
“Im gonna kill you old man! LET ME GO!” The girl continued to yell but her violent thrashing weakened and her voice faltered.
As Tommy slowly felt the girl go limp, he continued to lift her up onto his horse. She slipped out of consciousness, her wound still actively bleeding and staining the pristine white snow.
“Lets get her to Jackson.” Tommy said as he mounted her on the back of his horse.
“Do you think someones gonna come looking for her?” His counterpart asked.
Tommy sighed, knowing that this technically wasn’t the best of ideas. “Maybe. I don’t know we’ll see what happens after we patch her up and hear what Maria has to say.”
ִֶָ 𓂃⊹ ִֶָ
“Look kid, fighting isn’t going to do you any good. We just wanna help you.” Tommy said, tightening the restraints that wrapped around her wrists.
Maria stood besides him and Joel lingered by the door frame, his hand resting on the knife that stuck from his pocket.
“I didn’t ask for your help!” The girl spat but still stopped her attempts to pull at the restraints.
Ignoring the pulsating, burning feeling in her lower stomach, she sat up as straight as she could, her face painted with angst and deterrence. No matter how tough she tried to look, Tommy could still see the glimmer of fear in her eyes, scared of her new surroundings and the new people standing above her.
“We stopped the bleeding. Gonna have to keep you in here for a few more days to prevent the wound from opening up again.” Maria spoke, her gaze solid and piercing. “Whats your name?”
The girl hesitated, her eyes flickering to the wall behind Maria and then to her lap. She felt strangely vulnerable. Like an animal locked in a cage sat in front of an audience for analyzation. She cursed herself for getting in this situation in the first place, fuming at how stupid she was for letting herself get hurt and found.
It was foolish, really. Running from two infected, the girl ran into a pile of rubble, not paying attention in front of her. Upon her fall, she felt a sharp, deep stab in her abdomen. Shed fallen onto a vertically standing metal rod in the pile, stabbing her deep enough to where when she tried to stand up, the rod went with her.
The infected still hot on her tail, she began to run again, functioning off of fumes of adrenaline and selected oblivion.
When she looked up, Marias eyes were still on her, the question hanging in the air.
“y/n.” She muttered quietly. Its just a name. She tried to remind herself. But it was more than that. She felt as though by giving this information she was automatically betraying everything she was taught since childhood. Betraying the people who raised her and the places she called home.
“Well y/n. Anyone gonna come looking for you? If they are you can just tell me and Ill dump you right back to where you were found, no hesitation.” She began, crossing her arms in front of her chest and shifting in her place. “Or, you can heal up and get out of this stinky room, see whats out there to offer.” Y/n nodded dazedly and opened her mouth to respond but quickly, the looming feeling of nausea came back to her like a wave, blurring her vision and causing her head to feel light
“I-” She began trying to start before the world around her went black and her head fell back onto her pillows.
“The hell happen?” Joel asked from the door frame, confused as to how she was completely conscious a second ago.
“it happens. She lost a lot of blood. Im surprised she woke up in the first place. Even more that she woke up to start throwing fists.” Maria said with a slight grimace on her face.
“Seems like a tough one.” Tommy added with a chuckle.
“Tough? Or dangerous?”
ִֶָ 𓂃⊹ ִֶָ
The sound of the door creaking open woke y/n up. No light shone around her, the room painted black with shadows and fuzzy figures of furniture. The night was cold and the winds howled from outside the windows.
A thump on the ground fully brought y/n to her senses, making her sit as far up as she could within her restraints.
“Who’s there?” She called out, her voice sharp, quiet and deep.
Suddenly, the lamp across the bed lit up to reveal the perpetrator. She was a young girl, easily the same age as y/n, give or take a year or two. She wore a dark red sweater and jeans, her hair tied back but strands sticking out and falling to frame her face, black worn out ear muffs, and a pair of black converse.
“Jeez. You got fucked up.” the young girl said, her voice riddled with enthusiasm and humor.
Y/n sat in speculative silence, her eyes weighing down on the girl before her and the energy surrounding her hostile and tense. The other girl stood awkwardly, looking back at y/n with a smile, waiting for something to be said.
“Welp… You’re a catch!” She said, making her way to the chair besides the bed and flopping down.
“Who are you? Why are you here?” y/n inquiried.
“Heard Tommy telling Joel about some feral raider girl he picked up from the side of the street. Said you were worse than a fish out of water. Wanted to see what the fuss was about.” She explained.
“Now that you got to see,” y/n began, lifting her arm to get attention to the restraint, her eyes round and pleading, “mind getting me out of these?”
She was hoping that this community girl would play into her plan, getting y/n out of the restraints so she could knock the her out and make a run for it.
“You see, i would if it weren’t for the fact that the reason you’re tied down is ‘cus you throw punches like a maniac and that if i undid them you’d probably kill me and run.”
“I wouldnt kill you.”
“Ok sure, you’d just knock me out and make a run for it.”
Ok so maybe shes not a complete idiot.
Y/n groaned and fell back against the bed, too tired to keep putting up a fight, the dull ache of the wound subtle but still stinging with every twitching muscle.
“How’d that happen?” The mystery girl asked, pointing at the bloody bandage wrapped around y/n’s torso.
“Tripped onto some dumb ass tube running from a few infected. Should’ve been looking ahead of me.” She responded, a wave of what almost seemed like embarrassment passing her face. So stupid.
“Well thats dumb.” The girl said before jumping up to her feet. y/n shot her an offended glance and rolled her eyes.
“You don’t know shit.” y/n said.
“But i do know that you’re supposed to look ahead of you when you’re running for your life.” she retorted with a laugh, striking on y/ns every nerve.
“I don’t like you.” Y/n stated sourly.
The girl turned on her heels to face y/n, a devilish smile on her face. “Yeah, im not the best at first impressions.”
Sticking put her hand towards y/n, the girl opened her fist as to shake her hand.
“Im Ellie. You?”
“Even if i weren’t tied down right now i still wouldn’t shake your hand. Y/n.” She responded, giving her a grimacing look.
Ellie laughed and brought her hand to her hair, brushing back the stray pieces of hair coming out her ponytail.
“You’re funny.” She said.
“Not trying to be.”
“Makes it better, means you’re naturally funny.”
“Or maybe you just have a fucked up sense of humor.”
“Mmmm maybe both.”
A beat of silence ran through the room, but this time, it wasn’t hostile and coated in adversity. Now, it was almost comical, the ends of y/ns lips tugging upward. It was a feeling she was unfamiliar with.
Smiling. A benign arrangement of facial muscles to y/n, but still urging at her in the moment that was entertained with bickering and catty comments meant to do nothing but scratch at each others ego.
The night went on and the two talked, Ellie determined to break y/n open and find out every detail of her life, like an abandoned puzzle she was dedicated in solving.
Losing track of time, morning came and the two still sat next to each other, by this hour the restraints on y/ns wrists were long gone and her hands remained in between her folded knees, keeping them warm. When Tommy came in to bring y/ns food, he walked in on the two laughing hysterically, Ellie standing on the bed doing what seemed to be dancing.
Once Ellie was harshly reprimanded by Joel, lectured that it was unsafe and stupid of her to have done that, especially to have undone her restraints and y/n fully healed and was released from her confinements into the community, the two reunited in the town, Ellie self-titling herself as y/ns tour guide.
Three years later, the two were still conjoined at the hip.
Although itd been quite a while and y/n had done more than enough to prove her loyalty, she still hadnt seem to be able to fit in. Some narrow minded people within the community believed her to be some evil villain constantly plotting on Jacksons downfall.
“Shes a raider and we’ve let her into our home. She doesn’t even work with us! All she does is use our communities resources and start issues.” One of the elderly men of the town stated to Maria.
The woman looked down at y/n who sat before her, her eyes on her lap and blood running down her nose.
At this point it’d been two years since y/n was brought into Jackson, but, it was not the first nor second fight shed been involved with.
“Oh shut the fuck up you old-”
“-Ellie.” Joel cut off sternly, knowing that if shed finished her statement the situation would not alleviate in the slightest. Ellie drew back, rolling her eyes and sighing in defeat as she stood besides him.
No matter how many times someone insulted, threatened, or cursed y/n, Ellie was there at ready. She was prepared to defend her without a morsel of remorse or hesitance.
No one knew her the way Ellie did. To the people in Jackson, y/n was hot headed and smart mouthed, only speaking when needing to make a counter act someone. She never worked well with partners in patrol other than Ellie and was known for never wearing anything but a grimace on her face.
This wasn’t who she was. No. Not to Ellie at least. While these people saw her as rude and unruly, she was the kindest person Ellie had met. She was thoughtful and careful with her every decision, letting none weigh her down with regret.
“Ellie if you have something to sat make it appropriate and helpful.” Maria declared.
“This isn’t her fault and you’re being completely ignorant if you say other wise. you know how people here are to her and you know y/n isn’t some super sinister master fucking plotter Maria. you know she wouldn’t have done what she did if there wasn’t a reason why.” Ellie ranted, defensively standing in between the elderly man and y/n.
“Oh please. My grandson would never cause anyone any harm unless it is to defend himself. Her on the other hand,” He pointed an accusatory finger to y/n, “she has a history of picking fights and you just let it slip by.”
“Thats the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!” Ellie shouted.
“Im sorry but what exactly are you doing here? you her little dog doing all her defending?” He returned.
Ellies eyes shifted and she began to step towards the man but a tug on her arm from Joel brought her back.
“Ellie.” Maria warned, raising her hand to urge Ellie to calm herself before the situation escalated.
Maria looked down to the girl who was supposed to be the subject being interrogated.
Maria never seemed to be able to figure her out. Even now, blood drying along her nose and chin, her eyes dead set on her own, and her hands steadily rested on the arm rests of the chairs, she seemed unreadable.
“Everyone out. Id like to talk to her in private for a minute.” Maria demanded gently.
“But-”
“Maria-”
Both sides attempted to interject.
“Just a minute. I want to get a better picture from someone actually involved in the situation.” She doubled down.
Ellie turned and looked at y/n, searching for a form of approval or confirmation she was alright with the situation, which she received through a nod.
After everyone exited the room, Maria pulled up a chair in front of y/n.
“Well y/n/n, what am i gonna do with you huh?” Maria asked, smiling against the circumstances.
Y/n simply shrugged, her menacing gaze turned it onto her hands fiddling with each other on her lap.
“You gonna yell me what happened?”
“It was nothing Maria. Just tell me what grunt job youre assigning me to for a week and ill do it, done.”
“Ive done that y/n. over and over. But, it doesn’t seem to work.”
Y/n sat tensely, trying her best not to look utterly bored.
Maria sat up in her seat, an idea seeming to stem in her mind.
“Im assigning you on daily patrol for the next two weeks. See if you blow off some steam. Don’t want to hear a word of complaint from your partner y/n. Im serious.”
Y/n nodded frivolously, desperate to get put of the room and go tell Ellie that the two are going to be on patrol together much more than often due to this “punishment.”
“You’re good to go.” Maria finally finalizes.
Saying her goodbyes, y/n walked out of the room, masking her joy until she was in the halls where she spotted the exact person she wished to see.
“Guess whose gonna have to suck up a whole extra 4 patrols the next to week if my face.” Y/n began joking as she approached the taller girl.
Ellie grabbled y/ns chin and tilted her head up, removing the dried blood from her face with her finger.”.
“Hopefully anybody but me.” Ellie groaned sarcastically, being retorted with a slap to the chest.
“Haha. Funny girl aren’t ya.” Y/n chucked back to her.
Once done cleaning the blood, Ellie threw her arm over y/ns shoulders and turned the two to face the door.
“Lets get outta here.” She said comfortingly.
