the night was still young and emmy was nowhere near ready to go home. instead, she scoped out the place trying to find her in and that came in the form of joaquin mendoza. she had heard the name before but had never been in the same room as him but now was her chance. somehow, some way she needed to wiggle into him space. drink in hand, emmy made her way over to his table and into the seat in front of him. “drinks of course. you can never pass up a good deal.” she noticed him untouched glass before her gaze met his. “penny for your thoughts? looked like you were in another world there for a second.”
𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 ⸻ 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 .

deseo as a common ground was frequented by everyone, or at least every member of a gang willing to play nice for an hour or two. however, the diablos vice president visited deseo with different intentions. for amongst alcohol, naked bodies and horrible music ( after his own tastes ) secrets flourished. as a man who rarely indulged in drinks, the reincarnation of ate found himself in a booth, glass of whiskey in front of him which he had not yet touched. piercing hues went to the entrance as the door was flung open. " another night and it is spent here ⸻ what was it, wings or drinks ? "

the night was busy and despite the money that she made — more than she had made in quite some time — she was glad to be take the mask off for the night. she said goodbye to the girls and headed out the door. the cool air on her skin caused her to shiver slightly but the voice that spoke made the goosebumps appear. he always did have a way of doing that to her just by talking. her instinct was to run the opposite of way. it had become the normal thing for her to do whenever she saw him around town. seeing him hurt too much but she knew eventually this exact scenario would happen.
“until you leave again which we all know is gonna happen eventually.” she wasn’t bitter about him having left. not really anyway. but she was more upset that he left without a word. her mind went to the worst places when she couldn’t get ahold of him but that quickly turned to anger once she found out he left on his own free will. it had been so long ago that now it just hurt but she had to use anger or else she’d fall apart.
“what is there to talk about?” her eyes met his then and god did she want to slap him. or kiss him. probably both. “you can walk with me and i will listen but doesn’t mean i gotta talk. deal?” even if she wasn’t prepared for what he had to say, she wanted to at least hear it. she avoided it for too long and if she was going to move past this, she had to face it.

this was stupid. he knew it was stupid. he couldn't help himself, though. of course he couldn't. carter took a drag on his cigarette, hoping he could finish it before caroline came out. he knew she was working here but not once did he ever think of stepping foot inside it. he didn't want to make her uncomfortable, no matter how much he wanted to see her dance. his head whipped up at the sound of the door opening and threw the cigarette away before he even thought about it. did carter have a plan? no of course he didn't but that's never stopped him before. carter didn't want to scare her, obviously . . . he cleared his throat and made himself visible, while he waited to see if she would notice him. "so how long are you gonna avoid me lina?" he asked, shoving his hands into his pockets. "thought i would come walk with you to the party . . . talk, maybe?" he half-asked. carter let out a laugh. "i mean, if you don't wanna talk i can just walk on the other side of the sidewalk." he admitted with a shrug. carter would hate that but if that's what she wanted, he'd do it.

it wasn’t very often that lina felt overwhelmed when working at deseos. she loved this job more than she could have ever predicted but some nights — like tonight — that the air felt suffocating. too many familiar faces in one place other than their clubhouse caused her to have to escape. she found her way outside and bummed a cigarette from the closest person that she could find. she had been mindlessly scrolling on her phone when she felt someone reach out and grab her arm. instinct was to rip her arm away but she saw layla and she moved to steady her instead. “died is a little dramatic don’t you think, layls?” she laughed before a smile tugged at her lips. “have too much to drink or just extra clumsy tonight?”
there was something about a decent plate of food and a beer after a shift at the hospital that just seemed to make the day feel a little better –– even more so when it wasn't food that had to be cooked by layla herself. the addition of a good deal meant that there was no way that she'd be attempting to cook for herself –– which usually ended in a less than appetising plate of food regardless. smokey barbecue wings consumed, the nurse felt like she'd truly taken advantage of the deal on offer, but needed to get a little air. she wasn't intoxicated by any means after only the one beverage, but a clumsy-by-nature woman coupled with the darkness meant that as she stepped outside, she lost her footing and stumbled slightly. "shit!" she cursed, hand reaching for a nearby body to try and stop her from hitting the ground entirely. "i'm so sorry, if i didn't grab you for help, i might have died." not to be dramatic, obviously.

this was the perfect place for a stake out. deseo was crawling with bikers — ones that emmy had seen on her suspect list for who murdered her brother. if she was going to gain any information, this would be the best to do it. her back was against the bar as she studied those around her. it wasn’t until she heard the voice next to her that she smiled. “babes, it’s called a prairie fire. the finest tequila with tabasco. heard it was some kind of special around here. not your cup of tea i’m guessing?”
༄ deseo, around 10pm ༄ open for anyone
༄ 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗢𝗙 𝗔 𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘. she felt so different, for one, so out of place. the establishment is crawling with bikers, intimidating her so much that she tenses when they so much as brush past her in the bar. and yet she stays, because curiosity prevails. that and, well, her companion had brought her a drink for her to try. camille all but coughs after taking a single sip, face twisting in disgust at the taste. “ ugh, what is this? ” she asks, holding up the glass to inspect.

lina had never been one to feel overwhelmed when she was working. the club was like a second home to her — late nights dancing until her feet hurt, dollar bills thrown sometimes viciously at her, and men grabbing any inch they could from him still didn’t overwhelm her as much as mare avoiding her. she was headed to the gas station for food when she saw her. blue hair tinsel twinkling under the florescent street lights. the other woman avoided her more often these days and lina never understood why. she had shitty tendencies sure but nothing came to mind that she did to mare. it hurt because she had finally found someone that she connected with on a deeper level and now she acted like lina had the plague. seeing her in the streets caused a ache in her chest as she slowly approached the other woman. “mare,” she muttered, her name flowing past her lips so naturally. “what are you doing out here so late?”
pinpoint: on the sidewalk, somewhere between deseo and straton gas & convenience — saturday, 9:00 pm. tagging: carolina hawkins — @delicatefm.
it was hard, avoiding lina. mare knew what it was to live in a town that was truly small — one in which you couldn't sneeze in your own home without being blessed by half the community. straton, despite spanning the length of two towns, was proving to feel smaller. she told herself she didn't want to speak to lina — didn't want to fall back into the habits that had led her to make that call to the kentucky state troopers. but she didn't much feel like that was true. still, mare stuck to her guns. she always did. " oh — " catching sight of lina now, the urge to follow up her exclamation of annoyance with a cuss word is strong. rolling her eyes to the sky, mare swallows it down like bitter medicine. she would turn around, if she weren't walking her bike alongside her. a modest single bottle of $10 chardonnay is balanced precariously in its basket. as if on cue, a piece of her hair tinsel, bright blue, catches the wind and finds its way into her mouth. mare spits it back out, and takes the humiliation as a sign from god. what she was doing to lina was wrong. but she couldn't stop now. it was working too well.

( trigger warning: alcohol abuse, murder )
you were from a small town in south carolina born to a single mother ana maria acosta. you came second to an older brother who had been born ten years prior. while your mother worked to put food on the table, your older brother was taking care of you. he was young but he cared for you as if you were his own child. your mother drank too much when she was not working so your brother had to step up. he was often found helping you with your homework or taking you to school events. it wasn’t his responsibility but he was always there when you needed him.
he left when you were only eighteen. he didn’t say where he was going and when you begged him to take you with him, he said he couldn’t. instead, he gave you a silver necklace and told you he loved you. that was the last time that you ever spoke to him. you would have followed but your mom needed you more. her drinking got worse and you had to get a job to cover the bills. you could barely get her out of her room at times let alone to go to a job. it wasn’t your destiny to become the caregiver but her brother had done it for so long that it wasn’t about time that she stepped up.
you waited five years to hear anything from your brother. you didn’t expect to find a news article while searching for him to let you know the unimaginable. a murder with no suspect in texas. you couldn’t figure out why he would have went across the country to texas. you also couldn’t figure out why someone had murdered him. packing up your bags and dragging your mother with you, you find yourself heading to texas. you get a job at the sheriff’s office and talk to a few of the cops and find out that they have suspects in mind. someone involved in the biker gangs killed your brother and you are determined to figure out who and why.
they say revenge is sweet and you are willing to burn the town to the ground to learn the truth.

BIOGRAPHY
( trigger warning: mentions of emotional and physical abuse, infidelity )
you come from a prestigious family that is well known in both stratford and newton. charlotte hawkins ( formally james) was the picture perfect housewife. former beauty queen turned trophy wife, you look just like her and that is something that she absolutely despises you for. jamison hawkins was a very sought after lawyer who you watched win case after case. you also watched after each case he lost the destruction that he left behind for you to clean. you were only five when you cowered in the hall closet as glass shattered all around. it was the first time that you consciously knew what was going on.
you were seven when another baby was brought into your life. not one that grew from your mother, but one that had been the product of a one night stand your father had with a dancer. the woman he slept with stayed in the guest house the whole nine months and the moment she gave birth, your father tossed her aside like she was yesterday’s trash. you were told that your mother couldn’t have children so they hired a surrogate. you knew that wasn’t the truth but was told to go along with the story. you complied easily but never looked at your father the same way.
you excelled in school and sports - anything to stay out of the house as much as possible. you started cheerleading when you were ten and loved every second you were on the mat. when you were fourteen, you started to develop faster than other girls and your mother berated you every chance she could. her jealousy brought out by the attention you got from everyone. she started limiting the amount of food you ate and what you wore. when she got mad, you didn’t stand a chance against the anger. it was before homecoming, you learned how to cover up a bruise for the first time. you’ve had to master it ever since.
when you met carter, everything got better. he was just like you in so many ways and he understood the madness that you endured. you thought you were going to marry him one day but that ended abruptly when he left without saying goodbye. heartbroken was an understatement and you were told you deserved it. no sympathy from your family, only critique. you finished high school and went to college. you didn’t last long there, but instead of admitting defeat, you have been lying. you told your parents you got your bachelors degree and even went as far as faking documents. instead, you found yourself working for the people that you were warned about.
the diablos accepted you without question. you were good at what you did and became the secretary for them. you fell into it immediately and felt a sense of pride that you hadn’t felt in quite some time. it was exhilarating and she had a new found family. when you’re not needed, you find yourself dancing at deseos. at first you went there to see what the place and people were about. you never saw your siblings birth mother there and wondered where she had gone. something about the place caught your attention and maybe you want your parents to find out. it would ruin their reputation and as much as you despise them, you also care. at work, you wear a wig and don’t tell anyone your real name. you’re not ashamed of the work you do but you also don’t want to put it on display either.
you are just trying to survive with some part of your psyche in tact. as someone brilliantly said “i can do it with a broken heart” and you’ve been doing that for a very long time.
