it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

Technically, clerics don’t draw power from their gods, they draw power from their faith. There are many clerics who draw power from faith in concepts like nature, the elements, or Justice. Then there’s that one weirdo who is powered by their faith in other people.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but as a creator -
I am fine with "the audience" -
downloading my fics
printing my fics
copy/pasting or screenshotting my fics
sharing your saved copy of my fics with anyone else who might want them in the unlikely but never impossible case that my fics are no longer available on ao3
making a book of my fic(s) and running your fingers across the pages while lovingly whispering my precioussss
doing these things with anything I create for fandom, such as meta, headcanons, au nonsense like 'texts from the brodinsons,' etc
I am not fine with "the audience"
doing any of the above with the purpose/intent of plagiarizing my work or passing it off as their own in any capacity
feeding my work into ai for any reason whatsoever
Save the fandom things. Preserve the fandom things. Respect the fandom things.
Enjoy the fandom things.

I was thinking about something earlier while reading an unhealthy amount of Star Wars fanfiction:
Armor Terminology Historically vs. In Star Wars
Now I'm gonna share
Spaulders vs. Pauldrons (Historically)
Spaulders: Plate armor that sits on top of the shoulder.
Fixed into place via the use of straps or ties
Predecessor to pauldrons
Example:
Tumblr media
Pauldrons: Plate armor that covers the entirety of the shoulder and armpit, often wrapping around to cover parts of the back as well.
Fixed into place via the use of straps or ties
Evolved from spaulders to cover common pierce points from blades
Example:

More Examples (But in Star Wars):
Spaulders:

Pauldrons:
There aren't many examples of pauldrons in Star wars, and it appears Captain Rex (as do other esteemed troopers regardless of generation) wears one pauldron in addition to his spaulders. Traditionally this style of wear would be used for swordplay to protect the dominant sparring side

Thank you, that's all. I hope this was helpful 🙃

Hey! I have a question about salamanders and their association with fire. I know that a connection between the two was written in Pliny the Elder's Natural History, and also in the Talmud, but it seems like there was an association even beforehand. Do you know of any other texts that might shed some more light on the subject?
Not off the top of my head! Usually if Pliny is the source on something that's the earliest you're gonna get. Partially because he made a lot of stuff up.

idk if this is controversial or not, but I really like when non-professional writing like fic has hints of author bleedthrough when it comes to like, what different people assume is common knowledge. Like sometimes I’ll be reading a fic and it’ll just be obvious that the person writing it is either obsessed with medicine or has been to medical school, because they’ll use terms that are just a shade too technical without explaining them. It’s never the super specific stuff that they’d know other people are unaware of, it’s always the things that once you’ve known it for a while you forget it’s niche knowledge. It’s fun because as a fanfic reader it reminds me of how this is a fun hobby community, where everyone has their own thing going on outside of fandom. Everyone’s got their own specialties and they can’t help but write that into their work sometimes
