This is stupid but this is the grown people writing fanfiction website after all, so...
In my opinion good fanfiction and fanart and such has basically three options:
It adheres to the setting and the characters
It changes the setting but not the characters too much (i.e a fic where Anakin and Obi Wan are samurai in Sengoku era Japan)
It changes the characters but not the setting too much (i.e a fic where Obi Wan turns to the dark side)
If you make a fanfic where both the setting AND the characters are completely different, that's not a fanfic, that's just a fic. And then you need to take the plunge and make it your own original writing. Or at least don't tell me it's a good fanfiction. It might be good, excellent even, but this isn't the thing I wanted to read.
#so much vigilante deku dadzawa bullshit is precisely this. please make ocs ok#like. theres a level to which you change so much about the characters but still have it focus on them#that you might as well have changed the setting.

the entirety of deku vs class a was him trying desperately to mask and it not working out for him even a little bit. he was literally wearing an honest to god physical mask and didn't find any success.
deku isnt self-aware enough to deliberately mask his emotions nor realize he's masking and it's weird to read interpretations of him where he is. if he were trying to mask he'd have very, very obvious tells. 241 (not aware enough to mask), 126-130 (multiple instances of "trying to mask with tell" and "not aware enough to mask"), 137 (not aware enough to mask)
#and the circumstances that led to this make his reasoning for masking ridiculously obvious. like. idk.#he wouldn't feel the need in day to day classes#even then? he probably didn't realize he was Actually masking his emotions. he recognized that he was hiding his feelings but#he doesn't know that there's a methodology to it or anything. he's not thinking of it as masking#and he was masking from himself just as much as he was from anyone else

in general the fandom's preoccupation with his dad gets less and less endearing with each passing day but it would be cool if people would quit coming up with progressively more grimace-inducing reasons to woobify my guy
"deku inherited vestigial dragon traits from his dad" is a bizarrely common headcanon that doesn't even make sense and speaks to some weird determinism. like even if this made sense, can't a guy just behave like an animal because he's a weirdo and not because he "inherited traits" that are completely imaginary
