I've just seen the suggestion that John's empire isn't fascist.

So here's a fun etymology fact:

This very serious chap is the bodyguard of a high ranking Roman magistrate, and the snazzy bundle of sticks with an axe in the middle is called a fasces. It's a symbol of the power of the magistrate and his authority to punish. Mussolini thought it was such a great symbol for the power of the state that he named his political ideology after it: fascism.

But it's not just the sticks that have a special name. The guy who carries them does too. He's called a lictor.

The Lyctors of TLT are likely a portmanteau of lictor and lych - an old timey spelling of the word that has made its way into popular fantasy media as "lich" to describe a powerful magic-wielding undead entity.

Of course, John's empire could also be fascist because it's an authoritarian theocracy with a highly stratified social structure that fetishises the military and believes that the nebulously defined opponents of their civilisation are a lesser form of humanity, and where religious and political dissent are policed by the intelligence services and a literal inquisition...

also, deer are simultaneously satan’s weakest and strongest soldiers. they die like hamsters or survive things that really should have killed them. biting the dust from an internal hemorrhage after jumping over a fence or surviving 10+ years with an arrow imbedded in their side. fate rolls the dice on every injury and they either get a 0 or a 20. keeping them alive is hard. killing them is also hard.

Female black widows can live up to 3 years but their male counterparts rarely live four months. Some tarantulas live upwards of 20 years. The longest lived spider was around 43 years old when she was cruelly assassinated by a parasitic wasp. Domestic rats have a lifespan comparable to female black widows. To put things into perspective, there are spiders that remember a pre-pandemic world but it is likely every rat on earth was born post-COVID. There could be a spider out there born when Reagan was in office.
