In the antebellum South, denim fabric was often publicly referred to as "Negro cloth".
This term was used to stigmatize and identify enslaved people because they were the primary wearers of this coarse, durable fabric. Denim, initially used for work clothing, was later adopted by various social groups, including cowboys and later even becoming a symbol of rebellion. This term was a derogatory and racist way of referring to the denim fabric worn by enslaved people in the South.
While Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis are credited with patenting blue jeans in 1873, the knowledge of indigo dyeing and denim use came from enslaved people.
