Masamune stared at the empty side of the bed, laying on his side and wishing there was a beautiful pair of green eyes staring back at him.
Ritsu was unfortunately visiting his family currently, though it certainly wasn't for a happy reunion or a celebration. No, Ritsu had been summoned by his parents in order to try to figure out some sort of ridiculous match making. The only reason Ritsu agreed was to completely reject the proposition and put his foot down about his parents' meddling in his love life, hopefully for good. Masamune had offered to come along as support, but Ritsu's pride insisted that he needed to do this alone.
Masamune sighed dramatically, flopping over on to his back to stare at the ceiling. Ugh, just thinking about Ritsu going to a match making session made his stomach churn, but he had to remind himself that Ritsu loved him, Ritsu moved in with him, and Masamune was going to make damn sure that Ritsu was going to marry him and not some random bimbo his parents decided was a better fit for their son.
The thought of marriage made Masamune instinctively open his nightstand, lifting up some socks to fish out a little black box. He opened it and stared down at the simple, silver band.
Masamune had bought the ring about a month after Ritsu moved in with him. Maybe he was jumping the gun a bit by doing so, but Masamune couldn't help his impatience! It was a miracle that he hadn't already popped the question. Masamune was just so desperate to spend the rest of his life with Ritsu, to cherish him, take care of him, to prove that he would be by Ritsu's side for forever and a day.
Still, despite being a feared demon at work, when it came to Ritsu he was the one who was fearful. He was afraid one day Ritsu would up and disappear again, that somehow he'd put his foot in his mouth and ruin everything between the two of them, or maybe Ritsu would find someone better, someone less clingy and with less baggage and who was less jealous. His biggest fear, however, was showing Ritsu this little ring. Masamune worried that the brunette's arranged engagement had left a bad taste in his mouth and that even the mention of marriage would send him running. Or, considering Ritsu's past, flying to another country.
"Tadaima!"
Masamune rushed to hide the box again, closing the drawer maybe just a little too hard. He was surprised that Ritsu was already home. He had fully expected his mother to drag the argument on and on and on till much later into the night.
"Okaeri." Masamune called back, standing and going to greet his boyfriend. God, he loved saying that! His boyfriend. It made him want to grin like an idiot.
However, Masamune's good mood dropped when he saw Ritsu. The brunette's eyes were red and puffy, clear signs of crying.
"What's wrong?" Masamune asked immediately, cupping Ritsu's face in his hands. "What happened?"
Ritsu gave a sad smile, leaning into his touch, in need of a little comfort currently. "Just the normal stuff: yelling, accusing me of being an ungrateful son, telling me I need to grow up." He said. "I'll be okay, really, I'm just not as good at handling all the arguing as I thought I'd be." He added before falling forward to press his forehead against Masamune chest.
Masamune wrapped his arms around him. "I wish you would've let me come with you."
"...Yeah...me too." Ritsu admitted. Part of the reason he had agreed to meet with his parents was because he had finally decided that he was going tell them about Masamune, but in the end his confidence crumbled and he left without so much as whispering his lover's name. God, he was such a coward and a failure! What did Masamune even see in him? "I'm sorry." He sniffled as Masamune started to lead him to their room. The editor-in-chief figured that what Ritsu needed right now was rest and relaxation after all that.
"What are you apologizing to me for?" Masamune asked with a frown, sitting on the bed and tugging Ritsu down to sit beside him. "I should apologize to you for not insisting more that I go with you."
"Don't be stupid, you were just doing what I asked. For once." Ritsu said with a soft laugh, wiping away at a few fresh tears.
"Exactly. For once I listened and look what happened! I'm never listening to you ever again." Masamune said, making Ritsu laugh again. "But seriously, why are you saying sorry to me?"
"Because...I wanted to tell my parents about you tonight and I chickened out. You deserve better than a partner who can't even say the word 'boyfriend' around their family." Ritsu was trying hard not to get all worked up again, but it was difficult not to as he admitted his failure.
Masamune remembered the ring in the nightstand and frowned. He held one of Ritsu's hands tightly. "Hey, I know I always tease you about stuff like that, but you don't have to do anything you're not ready for."
"But I was ready-I am ready!" Ritsu insisted. "They just-my mom is so-" He struggled with his words, getting frustrated.
"I know." Masamune said, kissing the side of his head. "It's okay." He wanted to reassure, but his words only seemed to agitate Ritsu more as he stood.
"But it's not okay!" Ritsu insisted. "How are you ever going to meet my parents if I can't even admit that you exist?"
"I don't have to meet your parents. We're both adults, Ritsu." Masamune said. "We don't have to have the whole 'meet the family' thing. It's not like you're likely to meet mine, so it's not something you have to feel bad about."
"But I can't in good conscience marry you when they don't even know about you!"
Ba dump
Masamune's heart may have completely stopped for a full minute before he was able to speak again. "You...you want to marry me?"
Ritsu's own words seemed to finally hit him, his entire body heating up and face burning red. "I-I-I never said that!"
"I've learned how to read between your lines, Ritsu." Masamune said as he stood, standing in front of Ritsu and taking his hands in his once more. "I want to marry you too."
Ritsu jittered in his spot for a few moments, a conflicted expression flickering across his face before he pulled away to open their shared closet. He rummaged around for a minute, Masamune watching him curiously.
Ritsu then returned to stand in front of Masamune, holding something behind his back. "I...I don't really know how to go about this kind of thing. I didn't know if you'd want it to be public or private and I really d-didn't know when the right time would be and if I was rushing things or not and I-" He cut himself off, taking a deep breath before he revealed the black box, opening it and showing the silver ring. He went to say more, explain that this was why he was so desperate to tell his parents about their relationship, but he found himself on his back on the bed with Masamune on top of him.
Masamune kissed the brunette over and over again, Ritsu far too stunned to really react to the attack.
"Yes, I'll marry you, of course I'll marry you, I'll marry you a thousand times, I'll march right up to your parents and present myself as your fiance if you want, I am so, so happy Ritsu, you make me so happy, I love you more than anything." Masamune said in between leaving kisses on Ritsu's cheeks and forehead, a few even trailing down to his neck.
"R-Really?" Ritsu managed to get out, positively breathless.
"Of course, idiot! What, did you think I'd say no?" Masamune asked with a laugh, smiling brighter than Ritsu had ever seen. "Though, I am pissed about one thing."
"What? What is it?" Ritsu asked, quickly becoming worried.
Masamune reached back over to his nightstand, pulling the box back out and showing it to Ritsu, opening it up to reveal a matching silver band. "Just that you beat me to the punch."
Ritsu smiled, once again teary eyed, but for a completely different reason. "I love you."
Masamune would never get used to hearing that, never get used to the rush he got from hearing those three simple words from Ritsu.
But, he had the rest of his life to try to do so.
