Logistics, progress and purpose
Progress thus far... we now have a studio, some sound treatment, an interface, good audio and video software, 3 cameras, some colored lights, and various instruments at the disposal of anyone who graces the space with their presence.
There is a piano on the way.
One of the biggest priorities now is to publish a steady stream of good material. Quality is more valuable than quantity of course. From a business perspective, this is the lifeline of the project, because it’s success will be dependent on its following.
We’re looking to bring in more and more musicians, not only to add variety to what gets published, but also to open up our options as to what kind of cocktail the next session we plan will be. Perhaps that modular synthesist that was over last time could combine the prog-rock influenced bassist who was in a few weeks ago, or the latin style drummer who reached out last week.
The aim of this project is to innovate with music, and one of the ways that people do that individually is by drawing from different influences of theirs. We try and do that when we can by combining musicians of different influences. This is the idea behind the name “Derivative Sessions,” that from a kind of birds-eye existentialist point of view, nothing is new, but creating something that is a derivative of what already exists is new to us in a meaningful way.
It seems this is happening in the world socially and culturally at an increasing rate, like never before. Since music is synonymous with culture, the purpose of this project seems pretty self-evident.

What is Derivative Sessions?
It’s not exactly a label. Or is it? Who knows, who cares. The point is to showcase improvisational and somewhat experimental content from musicians–video and audio–in a laid back setting.
We do not adhere strictly to any specific genres. On the contrary, it’s encouraged to pick and choose different influences and swirl them together to create new concoctions of what can simply be classified as none other than “music”.
Derivative Sessions leans heavily towards publishing all new content under the Creative Commons license. Simply put, for those who don't know, CC means that the artists keep ownership of their material, but give permission for anyone else to use it so long as they receive credit.
Currently, this project consists of a studio where artists’ sessions are recorded and picked to be uploaded on various social platforms. Where this project will go beyond that is to be determined. Most certainly it must maintain momentum in order to grow and evolve, enhancing it’s main purpose–to consistently foster the musical innovation of artist’s whose work deserves to be seen by the outside world.
Come with us and explore this thing that we call music...
