While he grew up, Leon knew something was different about him.
He saw things other people didn't. Wisps of colors. He didn't know what they meant at first, and didn't know other people didn't see them until his mother yelled at him to stop talking about imaginary things. It wasn't until Hop was born, and he had to take over raising his little brother while his mother picked up more shifts at work, that Leon started to understand what the colors mean; they gave him a glimpse into people and Pokemons' emotions.
He gets his starter and starts his journey a few years later, when his grandparents finally moved in to take care of Hop. So he's unprepared when he enters a stadium for the first time and nearly passes out from the pain of the weight of all the emotions on him.
Leon starts carrying a bottle of painkillers with him to events.
It's only after a fateful encounter with Rose that Leon realizes he doesn't just see people and Pokemons' emotions: he can manipulate them too.
He doesn't do a lot. Leon knows that he can probably do a lot more than the little nudges here and there (proven by the incident with Rose), but it'd make him feel too bad to do it consistently. So it's subtle: a little bit of happiness to the crowd around him, a little bit of sadness in Rose and other people he wants to make leave him alone, a little bit more happiness to his friends and his Pokemon. In battles, he won't mess with his opponents or their Pokemon, but he always gives his Pokemon a boost of confidence.
[Sometimes, it keeps him up at night. Is he really a good trainer, with a decade of strategic knowledge and the ability to make calculations on the fly? Or has he been cheating this whole time, using an edge that no one else knows he has to win matches he shouldn't?
On one hand, he wants to believe that he is actually a Champion, that he's not some fraud. On the other hand, he's felt stagnant for a decade; in a sick and twisted way, if he's been cheating this whole time, there's a weird hope that he isn't trapped and that he can continue growing.]
One day, Leon catches wind of the Wild Area changing, of it somehow getting more dangerous for people but safer for Pokemon. Now, Leon doesn't often get the chance to actually fulfill the duties of a Champion (instead of an idol, and he's definitely not bitter about that at all), so he jumps at the chance to investigate.
Wes is the first person Leon has ever seen to have nothing around him.
Leon knows he's feeling emotions, but it's like they're locked away from him, where he can't reach them. And it becomes apparent the longer they spend time together, but Wes can't reach them either.
He doesn't know what happened, or who did this to Wes, but he vows to reopen that door and unlock Wes's heart again, just as he did for the shadow Pokemon in his care.

There's a lot of text in the game saying that Leon is "so much livelier" and otherwise happier now that he's no longer Champion. But one thing I noticed in the Battle Tower is he never really smiles anymore.

Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.

The other anon is not the only person who's wondered how Wes would feel about their oc, heh. I've had thoughts about how things might go between Wes and my Shield protagonist, Victoria. While Wes has the uncanny trait of getting younger siblings, I feel like a kid from Unova might not trust him if they knew his bloody past because of Team Plasma and the trauma that team has caused for the region (ESPECIALLY in BW2; no shade to shadow!Lugia, but Kyurem definitely killed some people).
That does peg the question if Wes has at least heard what happened in Unova with Team Plasma/Neo-Plasma?
To be fair, I think anyone would side eye Wes for his past. There were a lot of crimes.
It's interesting because Wes's exposure to Team Plasma was somewhat limited. The two major figures he met from them as kids were Ghetsis and N, and he's seen a few of the Team Plasma grunts try to preach in Pyrite and Phenac.
Considering the fact that the Plasma Preachers went on to be publically executed by the townspeople, and baby Wes's impression of baby N, he thinks everyone in Team Plasma are whiny little babies who are trying to convince people to kill themselves.
That's because in Orre, separating Pokemon from their trainers is to sentence one or both of them to their deaths. The desert is a guaranteed death sentence and your odds of surviving as a lone person in the towns is not much better. And a lone Pokemon is guaranteed to be snatched up by a trainer or Pokemon trafficker with no morals other than money.
(Yes, this is why Team Snagem are considered the scum of earth in Orre despite the fact that Cipher are the ones creating the Shadow Pokemon.)
Although through the grapevine, he has heard about some of what happened in Unova and with "Sir Hypocrite" (his nickname for N). He thinks its hilarious that the Prince of Plasma got his ass handed to him by a child.
(Not counting BW2 because that hasn't happened yet and there are some changes to that plot, because Wes will not miss the chance to bully N.)

It’s me, I am the creator of the Zoroark-Armarouge guy, I am deciding to infodump to you because I need someone else to talk about him outside of my partner watsgchviduchb
So first, his name is Sogo Yamao, he was just a normal kid from Johto, always smiling and cheerful, he liked warm sunny days. On a warm sunny day when he was 5 he wanted to go to the park, he asked his sister to take him but she was a moody teenager (she was 14) who brushed him off, her mareep also didn’t join him, because she didn’t wanna go in the heat
So yk, it was a safe neighborhood so Sogo went on his own to the park, and he saw an injured ‘pokemon’ and like any reasonable person he went to go help, except it was just a plush toy and he promptly got knocked out and kidnapped
You see, the person who is running this experiment is a man who truly believes the only way pokemon and humans can coexist is by fusing together, he also truly believes pokemon are better and superior than humans, so he splices pokemon dna into children (because their bodies are still growing and thus malleable),
Pokemon get the better deal, they’re usually sedated yes but only a little blood and spinal fluid is drawn, alongside a checkup and medical treatment if needed and then vaccinations, then they’re free to go
so far there haven’t been any real real successes for hybridization until Sogo, you see, Sogo is actually quite stable, but being experimented on, poked and prodded, undergoing stressful tests, well that’s traumatic, especially since he had no human contact outside of the scientists for literally 3 years
When he did escape he was really on edge and jumpy, but most of all he wanted to go home and be with his family, but arriving at his house he saw a for sale sign, so he came to the conclusion his family must be somewhere else, so that’s why he became a drifter, or at least partially, he doesn’t want to get caught by the scientists again, especially since he’s they’re only actually successful experiment
It's an interesting point of contrast to Wes's backstory, where he was also experimented on but it was with the approval of his family. He'd definitely be able to relate somewhat (even though there are a lot of differences between them).
Leon is growing so many grey hairs.

“What if the red string of fate was tied around your neck like a collar and the person on the other end was horrified to be holding it like a leash?”
Nah man you can’t just drop that concept and art and NOT expect me to be curious, I wanna know more about this universe
Like how do soulmates work? Can you always see the red string of fat? Or is there special criteria? I don’t need sleep, I need answers
Gonna be honest, I did that more as a metaphor, but I do have soulmate au thoughts so I will share that.
So soulmates are rare, and usually only associated with those that have aura powers. The red string of fate can't be seen by anyone other than aura readers, unless in the weird Arceus void.
Given that these soulmate bonds are also manifestations of auras, a powerful enough aura reader can also affect and change soulmate bonds.
Wes used to have a soulmate bond, tethered to someone he never met, until he died when his town collapsed. Afterwards, he is technically a new soul, so he just has a snapped soulmate cord, fluttering loose and aimlessly. (Something that should drive him to madness over the course of the decade that's passed, but since he was shadowed, it stopped being a problem.)
Rui was nowhere near powerful enough to manipulate that broken bond, and Nascour never got close enough to Wes to do anything bad to him. Once those two left Orre, there was no one in the region who could help Wes...
Until he went to Galar and met Leon.
Leon saw Wes and was immediately intrigued. First, the lack of a visible aura: unlike with other people, Wes never had any swirling colors around him. And second, the broken soulmate bond. The thing is that Leon does not know what these things are: he's picked up on the fact that colors = emotions and that he can kind of nudge people to be happier or more relaxed or maybe even scared, but he'd never seen a soulmate bond before and has no idea that this is a power with precedent and not just a weird thing he can do.
Meanwhile, Wes picks up immediately what Leon is. Because he's a Shadow, being near an Aura Reader feels different than being near a normal person. If being a Shadow is like depression, being around Rui is like being on a very low dose of antidepressants, being around Leon is like being on a higher dose, and being around Nascour is like being on meth. So Wes decides to stick around Leon, because he clearly doesn't know how dangerous this power is, so obviously someone needs to protect him from anyone who would want to look him for it.
Leon, having no idea what he's really doing, takes the bond in his hands and connects it to himself.
The effects aren't immediate, but they're noticeable. Wes finds that he's opening up to Leon more, trusting him, wanting to be around him because the world gets brighter around him than when Wes is alone. He smiles more around Leon, wants to be closer to him, wants to offer himself up to him. A part of Wes (the part of him that's still a scared little boy hurt by Orre) wants Leon to own him, wants to be Leon's in everything, because he trusts Leon to be good to him.
And Leon finds that instead of 85% of his thoughts revolving around Wes, it's now 100%. He wants to spend his days around Wes, wants to see him smile more, wants to help him heal the broken pieces and wants to be there for him if he needs to break again. He wants to truly know and understand Wes, and he wants to be able to love him without fear or judgement from anyone else.
When someone else finds out what happened, it's too late. They're bound together, and nothing will stop Leon from loving Wes now.

Part of me wants to throw a younger version of my oc at these two and see what they’ll do
(Context, my guy was just a normal kid from Johto, but then he got yoinked when he was 5, got forcibly hybridized with a Zoroark and Armarouge, escaped the scientists when he was 8, and has been wandering the world trying to find his family, he be 17 but I wanna throw a freshly escaped oc at them)
Leon is horrified, and even more so at the fact that Wes is getting along extremely well with this little guy, almost like he can relate to what happened to him.
Meanwhile Wes is like "I guess I'm collecting more children now. Why does this keep happening to me?"
