Development (Response to Feedback)
I experimented with the ideas suggested by David.
I removed the grid, but in my opinion, the design is less effective without the grid. I think it does not communicate the idea of interaction (puzzle) as well.
I experimented with a bigger grid. I think this is effective, it is not too big so I can still easily manipulate the positioning without losing the legibility of the design.

In-Class Feedback

The final feedback I received was from David. He said the direction of my design was great, communicating the idea of interaction was effective, and had just a few suggestions to develop my design.
He suggested to experiment with using a bigger grid in my designs, but added, not to much bigger because it would make it harder to manipulate the positioning of the squares, and keep the design still legible. Continuing with a square grid, not rectangular, was David's opinion, and I agree.
Another option he suggested was removing the grid, keeping the same design idea but without the grid. Also moving more segments within the design to better communicate the idea of interaction, like the design is a puzzle being put together.
The feedback for my animation was simple, the concept was good, but it took to long to reveal the design, you have to sit and wait till you have any idea what the design is communicating. He said to start the animation with the grid 50-60% full already, providing the viewer straight away with an idea of what the animation is communicating.

Animation
Animation for my design communicating the 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the Roots of a Tree' exhibition at the gallery.
I used a grid to communicate the idea of a puzzle, linking to the hands-on exhibition, and the idea of interaction.
The animation is simple, I think I could experiment with animating the text, or the roots (shape), separate from the background, after the 'puzzle' has been put together, to add another dimension to the animation.

Development (Response to Feedback)
Developing my designs, in response to the feedback I received in-class from Caroline.
I shifted my focus from my design just communicating what the exhibition is, to focusing on a concept about the exhibition, and aiming to communication that in my design.
The exhibition is aimed at families, young children, designed for them to learn/experience with interaction.
I focused on communicating the idea of a puzzle, being put together to communicate the exhibition, just like the exhibition where you are able to interact and complete puzzles.
This adds a concept to my designs, the idea of interaction, not just communicating the exhibition itself.

In-Class Feedback

I got feedback from Caroline, on my different design direction, the idea of communicating an exhibition at the gallery, 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the Roots of a Tree'.
The feedback was positive, and I will find very useful, but it did highlight problematic areas in my design that I need to reconsider/develop.
Firstly, my design cannot just be a commercial design, advertising an exhibition at the gallery. There needs to be a concept, like my previous idea of 'escape'. Caroline suggested focusing on the idea of interaction at the Art Gallery. The exhibition is interactive, aimed for children to be able to touch, feel (interact) with the exhibition. I can time to communicate this idea in my design, the idea the gallery is a place to interactively learn and experience art and history.
Secondly, I need to reconsider how my different design elements (typography, shape, grids, texture, etc.) work together to communicate the idea of interaction.
I am happy with my design direction but need to develop my designs to better communicate a concept, not just advertise the exhibition.

Animation
Animation idea for 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the Roots of a Tree'.
The animation is rough, and requires refinement.
I wanted to experiment with the idea of the roots, the shapes, branching out from the trunk, the circle, of a tree.
The cutting in and out of the typography, I aimed to communicate the light filtering between the leaves of tree, flashing on the ground as the wind blows.

In-Class Feedback

I received feedback, in the week nine class, from David. He said the change in the direction of my design was "positive". My design aimed to communicate 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the Roots of a Tree', an exhibition on at the Art Gallery, changing from the idea of communicating the gallery as an 'escape' from the city.
The direction for my design is working more, he said, but moving forward to develop my design I should experiment with the composition, colours, typeface, scale, etc.
He said too I should experiment with the idea of the roots. Considering more what the root structure of a tree looks like, and how I can better communicate that idea in my design.
Overall, I am working in the right direction, and need to begin to experiment with motion in my designs, and how the motion can be used to better communicate the idea behind the design.

Development
Again, experimenting with the idea of communicating exhibitions that are on display at the Auckland Art Gallery.
I created another design communicating the 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the Roots of a Tree' exhibition. This time experimenting with more texture in the background. Using the texture of leaves, in a grid, with some blocked out in colour and other lighter in colour, to communicate the idea of the light filtering through the leaves of a tree, differently onto the ground. The variation in the typography, and the colour, again communicates the idea of the light through the leaves.
I created a design communicating the 'Taimoana: Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa' exhibition. The gradient, I used, to communicate the idea of the waves washing up on the coastline. The typography is simple, effectively communicating the exhibition, and the dates to view it. The colour is self-explanatory, blue for the coastline.

Development
I have experimented with a different design idea, instead of communicating the idea of 'Escaping the City', I aimed to communicate the opportunities provided by the Auckland Art Gallery, the literature/art that is on view there.
I aimed for the design to communicate a concertina file, within the file is all the material within the gallery available to the public to view.
The colours, pastel, link to the Art Gallery's use of colours in their designs.
The typography communicates a simple idea, exploring what the gallery provides.
In this design, again, I aimed to communicate a different idea, the exhibitions at the Auckland Art Gallery. Again, the design is aimed to look like a concertina file. Each file advertises a different exhibition on at the gallery.
The typography I used is the same typography the art gallery utilises (Gotham). The colours are the colour palette of the gallery.
I wanted to communicate the idea of 'Experience', experiencing what the gallery provides, the exhibitions.
For this design, I wanted to communicate about an exhibition at the Art Gallery.
The exhibition I chose was 'Nga Pakiaka: Like the roots of a tree.'
The design is simple. The main typography I used is the same used by the Auckland Art Gallery, and the variation within the typography I aimed to communicate the idea of a tree, the variation within the leaves.
The shapes in the background, I wanted to communicate, the roots branching from the trunk of a tree, reaching out stabilising it.
The colour choices I made are intentional, the green, obviously to communicate the tree, its green leaves. The darker green communicates the trunk and roots of the tree. I used yellow for the typography to communicate the idea of light peaking between the leaves of the tree.
In these designs I continued the same idea of 'Escaping the City' at the Auckland Art Gallery.
In this design (right) I used the red to communicate the busy, chaotic city. The blue is the serene, quiet environment at the Art Gallery.

Storyboard

I created a basic storyboard that communicates a rough idea for how I might possibly animate my design. I wanted to explore how I could use different motions technique to help communicate the design better.

Development
More experimentation with my design, still exploring the idea of 'Escaping the City'.
I, again, in response to the feedback I received at formative, experimented with different background ideas to communicate the idea of the busy city, which is then masked by the foreground, the idea of escape from the busy city.
While I think the designs are effective at communicating a busy background, the idea of the city could be better communicated/made more clear to the viewer, that the Art Gallery is an escape from the city.
