did you know that before limlife, where the number of deaths for most players skyrocketed, jimmy had the lowest amt of death on the life series due to spawning in last life with 2 lives and never getting an extra life. he survived most of that season with 2 lives alone and was permakilled by grian being a menace. thats not a skill issue. neither was his last death in third life tbh -- that battlefield was a mess. did you know jimmy is actually a pretty good player who just gets flustered sometimes. hey. you, who makes fun of jimmy for sucking. do you know he would wipe the floor with you at any moment in minecraft.

Do you have anything more? What do you think other life series members are defined by?

It’s hard because I only watch so many povs and I don’t like writing too much about POVs that I haven’t seen, but I think the one other Lifer I could really define with one word (at least rn) like I did with Cleo is Gem.

I’m also going to put this disclaimer on this one (it’s true about every analysis post I make but I’ll put it extra on this because it may come across slightly more negative even though I deeply love Life Series Gem as a character and find her and her fucked up thinking so fascinating!!! I love C!Gem and her weird little brain!!! We can love a character and recognize when their behavior isn’t perfect!!!).

This is about the CHARACTER OF LIFE SERIES GEM AND NOT THE CREATOR GEMINITAY!!

If I were to assign a word to Life Series Gem, its expectation. For herself and for other lifers.

The most obvious recent example of this is that Gem just… assumed everyone hated her and wanted her dead like twice in Past Life. She did it in episode 1 and episode 4. She was wrong both times, as other players show no signs of actually having anything against her except for Bdubs being mad in episode 3 for her square hole kill on him. No one seems all that mad about the octo-kill, they seem more impressed than anything. And this is a continuation of her narrative in Wild Life where she put a literal target on her skin with the expectation that people would of course be targeting her. She has a reputation, she’s Geminislay, the other Lifers hate her, they want her dead, don’t they? She gets flustered and frustrated when she can’t live up to her own grandiose idea of herself. Or at least the idea she claims to have of herself, because the amount that you think Gem buys into her own mythology really varies. I don’t think Gem thinks she has to be the great Geminslay, I think Gem thinks the other players think she has to be Geminislay and she thinks she has to live up to that.

Part of it is also that Gem has such strict ideas in her mind what other players are supposed to be. You get the sense watching her POV, especially in Secret Life, of someone who has heard the most story-ified version of the events of the other seasons she wasn’t in and has set in her mind what the “characters” are like. Like I can fully envision Life Series Gem making one of those “my hypothetical life series” posts that fans (myself included) make with the most general and stereotypical behaviors of every lifer. And when players don’t meet her expectations because no Lifer has ever exhibited exactly the same behavior in every scenario and even the most consistent players will do surprising things based on how they’re feeling, Gem treats it as a failing of them to meet her expectations, rather than a failure of her own to accurately predict behavior. She will literally taunt people into behaving the way she thinks they should by pointing out behavior that strays from their expected path as teasing or insults.

Crucially, Gem’s expectations are rarely met and it never stops her from continuing to have them. She can be proven wrong 35 times and still be shocked the 36th. And that’s because above all, Gem seems desperate for control of her situation. The way she gets control is by making like a three point checklist of traits other players are supposed to have (point three is always ‘wants me dead’ unless its Pearl, even when Pearl clearly wants her dead) and then she can just.. predict all of their behavior with those checklists. Her paranoia keeps her safe from other players because if they think of her someone intimidating and she thinks of herself as a target, she just needs to keep running and no one will hurt her.

And of course because I’m me, I’m going to use Pearl as my example for this. I’ve commented before on how wildly different the expectation of what Shiny Duo in the Life Series would be like before Gem joined vs the actual reality of Life Series Shiny Duo is. I think Gem went in assuming, like the fandom, that Pearl would have undying loyalty to her. That expectation is what led her to feeling betrayed when Pearl sided with Scar in the end of SL, not any actual reality of the game. When Pearl wouldn’t leave her team, including Scar who she had named an honorary Mounder, to join Gem and her teammate who then killed half of Pearl’s team, Gem seems genuinely baffled by it. When Pearl stops trying as hard to make amends in Wild Life, after Gem’s confession that she wasn’t actually mad and just wanted to have drama, that’s when Gem starts trying to coax her back with the promise of teaming on Red Life because Pearl is supposed to be loyal to her and it makes no sense in Gem’s narrative if she doesn’t. She literally starts Past Life by saying to Grian that Pearl always wants to team with her, despite this having not been true before.

Life Series Cleo is so defined by love. Alliances to her are about love and community and having each other’s backs always, even if they don’t think their chance of winning is all that high. It’s not wanting to win without your friends, your family, by your side. It’s the utter shock that someone could break that sacred covenant when BigB killed them, that Lizzie didn’t immediately back them up, leading them to lashing out with their heart literally glowing in their chest. It’s telling Martyn not to die, still caring even through anger, it’s choosing your friend to be your soulmate universe be damned. It’s silent rage when the Clockers died. It’s telling Etho that if it got down to it she would let him kill her. It’s saying that even though Scott is dead and they feel a little lost, there’s still Ren, still a reason to fight. It’s trying to give Martyn lives with a command that doesn’t exist. It’s every single time they’ve ever given a friendship/alliance with Pearl a chance despite how things tended to end because her lingering love from Last Life overtook any anger or grudge from any other series. Their biting sarcasm over so much kindness, so much heart.
