Will's final thoughts before disappearing into the Upside Down were probably of Mike.

Sorry guys. This one is devastating, but I can't stop thinking about it.

The moment before Will Byers vanishes, he has a "lightbulb moment."

A lightbulb moment is realization, recognition, revelation.

Visually, this scene signifies that something from Will's subconscious has been illuminated.

It could be a memory, a feeling, or self-actualization. In Will’s case, it’s likely a combination of all three.

In the show bible for Montauk (the previous name of Stranger Things) it says this about his sexuality:

He's recently come to the realization that he's not normal... that he's different.

"Different" is code for gay.

So in season one, Will Byers has recently realized he's gay.

But when they say recently, how recent do they mean? Could they mean like, super recently?

First episode recently? Minutes before his abduction recently?

("This Will Byers had a crush on Mike Wheeler" we say in unison. You're right. And the implication is devastating).

The show has already set an example for characters who were abducted by the demogorgon or taken to the Upside Down thinking about (and calling to) someone they love.

We have to look to moments where characters were confronted with the demogorgon or brought to the Upside Down without warning or prior knowledge. (Different to Steve having warning, or characters willingly entering the Upside Down).

Barb was definitely thinking of Nancy, who she felt rejected by. Then she calls her name.

(Barb is not canonically queer and in love with Nancy but... she could have been).

Nancy didn't know she would be brought to an alternate dimension and confronted with the demogorgon alone when she entered the tree - it's a lot like an abduction in that way.

She would have been thinking about Barb here (she's finally faced with the thing that killed her friend). Then she calls for Jonathan.

We haven't yet seen Will's time in the Upside Down, but there was certainly a scene in which he thought he had been taken back.

Who does he think of and call for?

Oh.

Mind you, Lucas and Dustin were also trick-or-treating that night. He still only calls for Mike.

(At least kiss the brick before you throw it at my face, Duffer Brothers).

It's not a crazy concept. When you're scared, in danger, or fearing for your life, you might think about someone you love or someone you trust.

In the Byers' house, Will calls for his mother and Jonathan, hoping they are home. This is logical.

But when he accepts that he is alone and may even die - when he is confronted with the demogorgon - I think he then thought of Mike.

So Will's lightbulb moment? I have two theories, but they converge:

Will remembered a repressed traumatic memory, likely related to his father Lonnie and his abuse - "Lonnie used to say he was queer, called him a f*g."

Will had his, "Oh shit, I'm gay" realization moment, probably inspired by the thought of his crush, Mike Wheeler.

And now imagine if we get Will's persepctive on the night Mike and the others went looking for him. We know you can hear the Rightside Up from the Upside Down... perhaps Will was in the woods that night.

Maybe he heard Mike call his name, and he called back.

will -> does not go anywhere without his earbuds. either listening to his playlists which are meticulously crafted to represent his exact mood or listening to a podcast. probably has an ipod for the vibes. curates his instagram feed & spotify wrapped. big youtube watcher and video essay connoisseur. addicted to iced caps. he is the digital camera person of the group and after every hangout he is uploading the pics to a google drive as fast as he can. sneakerhead. vinyl collector. BIGGG horror buff, is always dragging the party to watch the grossest most disgusting horror films you can think of knowing damn well he is the only one who enjoys that shit. he capitalizes random words when he's texting Like This. whenever he goes out in public he makes sure he's playing the most niche song he can think of so that if someone asks him what he's listening to he can look cool.

mike -> in the emo scene if you can't tell. despite being chronically online he has no social media presence whatsoever. his profiles are completely blank and devoid of any personality.,,, he probably has a profile pic and that's it. this guy is playing mysterious like his life depends on it. MASSIVE cinephile and letterboxd warrior, extremely pretentious when it comes to films, his fav director is either tarantino or fincher. from his taste in music and movies he comes across as a Male Manipulator but he is not trust!! hardcore gamer, his favs are phasmophobia minecraft and the walking dead. probably has a secret youtube or twitch channel that he's been desperately trying to grow (it's failing miserably). has a tamagotchi. can play guitar but he's really, really bad at it. has a collection of saved anakin skywalker edits. scott pilgrim fan. wrote fanfiction for klance. has a tumblr account. owns a nintendo switch, his fav game is breath of the wild. his screen time is ridiculous. cd collector. annotates books.

el -> ticketmaster WARRIOR. she has survived the great war many times . loves story based video games such as life as strange (she picks bae over bay because she's emotionally attached to chloe) and lost records. max -> crazy curl routine that she gives up on half-way through (diffusing is not for the weak). she's probably the most chronically online after mike. will quote something she saw on tiktok only for no one to laugh because it hasn't reached their feed yet. her favourite show is probably yellowjackets. cd collector. loves gaming, her favourites are roblox arsenal, valorant, and tlou. owns a polaroid camera. in 2020 she had her alt indie kid phase and made videos with her skateboard with the saturation cranked up to max. stephen king fan, her favourite book is carrie. thrifts most of her clothes, music, and books. absolutely HATES fast fashion/consumerism trends with a passion. has a goodreads account, she convinced will and mike to join but they're not as active as her. WILL stalk your profile even if she's spoken to you once. loves victorious. in therapy.

lucas -> embodiment of if he wanted to he would. his entire feed is literally just of max. least chronically online out of the party because he actually has a life. best fashion sense out of all of them. he always has those tiktok interviewers coming up to him to ask what song he's listening to or where he got his clothes from. clairo boy. always sending max instagram reels of cute dogs and going "us ❤️" . he is not immune to those gym bro meal inspo videos and has stacks upon stacks of protein powder in his pantry. doesn't really have a music taste and thinks everything is good music, which will and max can't wrap their heads around. will occasionally indulge in anime . watches love island with max and erica. posts his aesthetic pictures on pinterest. finds brainrot genuinely amusing and will quote it all the time around the party to annoy the shit out of them, even though he doesn't understand what it means.

dustin -> cringe content enthusiast!! matcha and tea enjoyer. can play guitar and has a really lovely singing voice, he posts covers to youtube or soundcloud. he likes all these niche bands and attends local shows. cannot eat a meal by himself without watching good mythical morning, rhett is his favourite. watches markiplier, matpat, kurtis conner, etc... big time star wars nerd, he and mike love reenacting fight scenes with their lightsabers. had a vine account (rip). like el he also loves legos, he especially adores those 3 in 1 sets and has a whole ass city. plays the wii and has a 3ds, his favourite game is either donkey kong or tomodachi life or detective pikachu. on el's minecraft serve he is the designated miner and makes all these elaborate redstone contraptions. abuses the shit out of reddit, he is up to date on all the leaks on his fav marvel movies & shows and is a chronic tech user so he turns to reddit for all of his Information.

This whole story revolves around what happened to Will. Like- everything calls back to it. Everything.

This scene drives me nuts for multiple reasons:

- “Letter to Willy” plays during it.

- the number… Mike complains about not having a number but realizes he’s always had it while he’s holding a 7up!!!!

- Mike regrets not saying anything to El Will before he went missing. He “didn’t know what to say”. Mike will know what to say in his letter to Willy

- the scene is framed through a car while they’re sitting on a car. A car is seen right behind Will in the “it was a 7” scene.

- 7up… if 7 is the up/Rightside up then… dnL would be the reverse… which was an actual beverage. 7 up -> (upside) down L(onnie) (credit to @/strange-anni for this find)

hear me out on a byler only episode

tldr at the end (leaks discussed)

I know everyone has seen has this caption on one of the duffers post regarding the teaser

And I know that there's an ongoing theory that episode seven is going to be when byler happens, but what if ONLY byler happens?

What if we only follow will and mike the entire time (maybe they're seperated from the group)

Like okay I know its a long shot but it would be such an interesting narrative choice that they have made before with el's missing sister episode.

(I can not find the link for this anymore pls lmk if you can so I can add it--->) Especially since I know there was a leaker who gave us the titles of the episodes and got them ALL right except for episode seven. What did they say it would be named? The Cleric and The Paladin.

I have reason to believe that, it is STILL named that, but was changed only so it would not be obvious in the title teaser to 'The Bridge'

As you can see they tend to lie or change (however you want to see it, basically they're sneaky) the titles based off of if it gives too much away.

I think the best example is telling the public S3E5 was going to be named 'The Source' because if it was 'The Flayed' it would be obvious that people were getting taken by the mind flayer as that was the big bad at the time of only season 1 and 2 being released.

If we can trust the leaker (and like I said they got every title right EXCEPT for seven) then honestly I think that the episode is still titled 'the cleric and the paladin' but only changed for the title tease, because like I said, that is WAYYY too on the nose for the GA.

Now my theory,

We know that the duffers have gone on record saying that will's "emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together." So it's safe to say that Will is extremely important thematically and plot wise to season 5. (This also proves my point that the duffers care about the cohesion between character arc pacing and the plot progression of the show, this is a link to that too btw)

Obviously a big part of will's 'emotional arc' is his sexuality, and a big part of that arc is his feelings for mike. This shows to me that it is NOT outside of the picture to include an episode that is centric to him, and by extension, centric to byler.

Them including clips from the literal FINALE but not episode seven seems to be a very deliberate choice. What if it's because the only content you can pull from it is will and mike, ANOTHER thing they have deliberately excluded from the teaser.

An episode that is solely to develop this relationship into its climax (a confession, kiss etc.) can show how serious the duffers are to focusing on a character they deem vital to the end.

Lets take the infamous 'The Lost Sister' episode for example. We know everyone hated it and its annoying they tried to make a backdoor pilot out of nowhere BUT it exists for a reason. In season two they could NOT have defeated the mind flayer without eleven, right? Makes sense.

But eleven could not have defeated the mind flayer without learning that her powers are stronger when she thinks of an emotion. This was taught to her in that standalone episode by her sister.

So WE KNOW that the duffers are willing to set aside an arc if it is vital to the ending, in season two eleven was, and now they are saying in season five, will is.

TLDR: Okay what does this all mean? We know:

Episode 7 is already being speculated for when byler happens

The duffers purposely change the real names of episodes for marketing

They are willing to have standalone episodes

Will and mike, and episode 7 are both absent from the teaser

Will is central to tying the show together

I think that this shows possibility for a byler ONLY episode, in order to set the scene for the climax that will is undoubtedly a driving force in. What exactly will happen is up to interpretation, maybe its churchgate, flickergate, loverslakegate, anything in this post, or something completely different. Who knows?

I would LOVE to hear what you guys think or if any of this made sense but I know I would be so geeked at an entire episode of just byler content I mean the tension would be GODLY. Sorry for any grammar mistakes this was kind of a ramble lol and thanks for reading if you made it this far<3!
