I was able to use a variation of this approach to mix a group "what?" with an isolated "was?" from later in the episode. I'm very happy with how it came out, so today I will be revisiting episodes 1-3 and building a sample library.

The middle lane that looks kind of like a barcode is the subtitle track I ripped from the source file. Resolve very helpfully split that into individual text boxes automatically, which means that in theory I should be able to use my existing marker points to replace Marcille's lines as appropriate.

The blue markers are the parts where Marcille is speaking. The sections with no markers are unwatchable slop where few if any women are speaking.

In this clip, Marcille, Chilchuk and Senshi say the line "Do we look like we can?" simultaneously. In the dub this is all mixed to a single track. This makes it impossible to separate their voices, and I was considering cutting the line entirely. Instead I layered both tracks and altered their pitch, so the English (top) sounds closer to Senshi and Chilchuk while the German (bottom) sounds closer to Marcille.

I've started using the open source tool Subtitle Edit, which gives me a timestamped and annotated transcript of the episode from the embedded subs. This is extremely helpful already, but I wonder if there's a way to add these timestamps into my video software as markers. This would automate the entire first stage of editing, which I'm currently doing manually.

This tool has also given me the option of making custom subs with Marcille's lines edited to properly reflect what she's saying onscreen. This would be a long process and if I choose to do it, it will be after all the episodes are completed.

Since it's in 5.1 surround sound, each dub is a group of 6 mono tracks meant to go to different speakers: left, right, center, bass (this is the .1 in 5.1), left surround and right surround.

In this clip from episode 2, Marcille is fantasising about the others apologising to her while she says "I forgive you". This created a problem since I couldn't switch tracks without the others suddenly speaking German too. To get around this I briefly sliced the center track out, which removed her line while keeping theirs audible (if a little washed-out).

Since I didn't know how to split surround tracks properly when I did episode 2, this is a very crude workaround. I would prefer not to cut lines unless absolutely necessary, so I might come back to this later on. For now, I'm focusing on getting every episode finished before I start making revisions.

What's Deutsche Meshi?

Deutsche Meshi is an in-progress edit of Dungeon Meshi where everything's the same except Marcille is German.

Didn't someone already do that?

While this has been done with clips, to my knowledge there is no available edit of the entire series.

Why are you doing it?

I don't watch anime, speak German or know how to use video editing software so it's a fun challenge and I'm learning a lot. Also a woman requested it.

How are you doing it?

I load the video and both dubs into DaVinci Resolve and place markers wherever Marcille starts or finishes talking. I then mute and unmute the tracks using automation, producing a single audio track.

So all you're doing is manually adjusting audio tracks over and over for hours?

...But why German? (from valkylander in the replies)

While the original idea wasn't mine, one of the reasons I chose to pick it up is because I like it. There's a nasty stereotype in English-language media of German being strictly masculine and inelegant, and it's nice to see a widely-loved female protagonist speaking it for a change. It's also close enough to English that a non-German speaker can roughly parse meaning by following context clues. Finally, a woman asked if someone could make this edit and I am a feminist.
