Reflections on a Year of Reading Chinese Literature
Book title
Wild Swans: Three Daughter of China By Jung Chang
The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang
First when we were introduce to this project I was told to choose 3 country that you like or have a connection with or just want to learn more about it.So for the assignment I chose china, japan, and cant remember the last one.The next Day when we had class I was told that my country would be China and I have to find book about china that you are interested in reading it has to be fiction and nonfiction.I exactly didn’t know why I went with china as my first choice but I think It's because it was close to india so I choose it and also it's good to know your neighbor history. So I got three book 2 nonfiction and 1 fiction and they were about true event that happen decade ago. When choosing thesis book I wanted to learn more about their country history rather than something else and these book are based on true event is perfect to learn more about it. I decide to read my nonfiction book first, while reading nonfiction books in there it show a lot emotions their country background history and other unique information that I didn't know before same with the second one it has similar information but on different event during that period of time But second book had major detail about the event rather than first one.And that made more thing clear for me and open up more information for reading to know about.
From Wild Swans:Three Daughter of China by Jung Chang I’ve learned from chinese Literature that Life can bring many problem doesn't matter how powerful you are or strong your are.It because In the book Chang the main character/Author Had struggle to pass thought in order to  keep her family safe and be together at all time.In that journey she lost a lot of people and home and other important things that she care about. This situation doesn't only apply to Chang it apply to her Mother, and Grandmother and even her own family member and many other family member in the world are going to this situation somehow. But at the end she only had her mother and brother and sister to be there for her.I;ve learned that you should spend much time with your family member or your loved one because one time there aren't going to be with you when you need them.
From my second nonfiction book by Iris Chnag: The Rape of Nanking I’ve learned from Chinese Literature that People dont have limit they can do anything if they were ordered to do so.Its because In the book Japanse soldiers were order to rape people in china while there was battle happening against japanese. Those people were age 8 to 70 that were raped during that time and china soldier couldnt do anything because they were turned into prisoner for japanese people. In my options soliders should know there limit on the stuff they can do what not to do.So for that reason I personally have limit on what I do and I think other people should do it as well.
When we were introduced to Independent reading I barely read book last time I can remember reading was in freshman year so I wasn't looking too much on reading. But I had to read to get my grade Up so I was kinda forced but by choice to read. While week progressed It got little by little more interesting to read and learned so much new information that I didn't know before about that country.Someday there was that I just can’t or didn't want to read because of that chapter but when story gets more interesting I was excited to read the following days.Hopefully this made my reading skill increase by little. Before we started this I hated reading book and found that very very boring and most of the time falling asleep. But this book had some magic that I just kept going and going.I’ve learned that Book has a lot of education and knowledge that you can archive from just reading.Hopefully this makes me more excited to read new book in the future.

Week 20 Blog
The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang
Pages read:81-130 pages
Word Count : 425
Summary(155):When more solider join fight the more there where turned into prisoners and they were promised to get food and work. Many of japanese soldiers who raped women and those women who give birth there child was secretly was taken away from them and was killed. The a person named john rabe a german Nazi party member who was there to lead the nanking safety zone and help the civilan. He turned office and other place a shelter for people to live and give them food. Many japanese solider backed off cause his status as nazi cause them to think before commiting it.After a incident at Marco polo bridge people in naking started to carry around gas mask fearing of japanese poision gas attack.Later the fall of nanking The big trench that chinese has build for tank traps were filled to top with by japanese with the bodies of dead and wounded soliders.
Critical Analysis(141):The Author included this in the book  “Dark times paralyze most people, but some very few, for reasons most of us will never understand, are able to set aside all caution and do things even they could not imagine themselves doing in ordinary times.” because to show the audience that when you are in hard/taught time you may forget what to do and have no idea how to do .But in other situation some other people are kinda the opposite they will do stuff that you can't even imagine to get out of that situation. They are only doing this stuff because they in dark time but if there were not in that situation they probably never think about that.So it just depend what situation you are in and for that reason people brain work different in that times.
Personal Response(129):During this chapter of reading its kinda boring cause it kinda going into more detail of what it said on other chapter and kinda repeating whats happening. So for that reason wasn't a good chapter to read but near the end it was opening new information about some different country and how they are starting to get involve in this story/book.So I think or Hope so they tell more information about how more country got involved and what's the benefits get are getting for doing so.Other than that wasn't much to talk about except one person who is a great/famous person who is helping out in the story and the people are naming their kids on him because that's how much he impacted on people.

Week 19 Blog
The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang
Pages read: 1-80 pages
Word Count : 341
Summary(122):It start with Empire of japan invades Manchuria a region in northeast of china. Then Japan took control of china biggest cities called Shanghai and three month later during 1937  they moved to china new capital nanking to capture it.Japan has taken over nanking just after 4 days and killed thousand of chinese soliders and for the reason there was no one to protect the civilian so japanese ran  6 week campaign of murder ,rape, torture, loting, mutilation of china civilans. Then moving forward japanese decide to find chinese soldiers and there were about 90,000 in nanking and group them up 100 to 200 then execute them all with machine gun and then throw the body to the yangtze river.
Critical Analysis(110):The Author included this in the book "loyalty is heavier than a mountain, and our life is lighter than a feather” because to show the audience that the loyalty is more valuable than your life during that time because being loyal is the best thing you can do and coming back dead is the highest honor thing can someone can achieve.Another thing is that to die for the emperor was greatest glory and to get caught by the enemy was the greatest shame. It mean that people will die rather then get caught by enemy and have there life goes to waste and for that reason it show loyalty.
Personal Response(109):Its my first blog on the book and so far it's kind interesting and little boring at the same time but some of the part get me excited to read and other part its the opposite of that.It started out strong then got little boring but now it's coming back slow by slow.during this time for the book so much stuff going on i kinda feel bad but also same time but  its getting interested on what's going to after next and for that reason i'm excited to read the next chapter to see how they approach the situation.other than that Im looking forward to reading.

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China
Pages read:512-531
Word Count : 432
Summary(168):Next chapter one of the major dead of the chairman of communist party member Mao died and he had a negative and positive sides.chang was happy about his death and other were heartbroken by this news. Then she had to return back to the factory but she didn't want to so her mother tried to help by calling Mr.Hui who was a colleague of her mother and they found out that they needed a english teacher at sichuan university and chang took this offer.later they needed a person from a department to give a scholarship to go to west and they choose chang as she was smart and she already passed her exams. And she was the first person to from the university of 90 million population to allow study on west. The 10 years later she made london her home and was settle there. Then 1988 her mother came to england to visit her and there she told the story of her and grandmother.
Critical Analysis(107):The Author included this in the book “This freedom to see the world a freedom I could not dream of tormented me Because it had been impossible.”because to show that the author wanted to see the world free and be peaceful but during that time. It was impossible due to so much violence, war, blood, happening during that time that made it impossible to even think about but everything change after one incident and that show that anything can be possible if you just wait and try your best. But everyone has freedom to think about it and no one can take that away from anyone.
Personal Response(157):This my last blog about this book and it wa interesting and really good to read about because it show story of family and generation going through tough time and every one in the family and even china experience it during that time and I feel like I learned few stuff about the story and the person. The best part of the book was ending for me because The ending that i look for every book is happy ending and that's what the book had and nice and safe ending that made me happy. When change was settled in different country where not much violence was happening and it was really good for her and i'm happy about it.But during end of the book she lost a lot important family member during this time and im really sad about it.Other than that it a really good book to read about to learn about people experience.
