fuck,  she  has  a  point  there. more  than  that,  max  almost  had  to  force  himself  to  come  to  grips  with  the  fact  that  it  was  actually  a  good  point  at  that.  yeah,  yeah,  the  whole  “you  care  enough  to  notice”  was  effortless,  unoriginal,  and  just  plain  fuckin’  juvenile  at  best,  but  at  the  same  time,  that  didn’t  make  it  ring  any  less  true.

fuck,  he  mentally  cursed  himself,  not  for  the  first  time  today.  as  far  as  he  was  concerned,  it  was  a  rookie  mistake  that  he  made,  nothing  more.  and  the  fact  that  it  was  so  minuscule  was,  in  fact,  what  made  it  even  more  unforgivable.  he  was  maxwell  jacob  friedman;  not  some  nameless,  irrelevant  fuck  who  was  prone  to  shit  like  that.  so  what  if  he  actually,  truly,  genuinely  did  care  enough  to  follow  up  on  anna’s  career?

those  were  his  inner  thoughts  and  feelings.  and  those  were  no  one  else’s  business  but  his  own.  adam  cole  taught  him  that.

in  fact,  he  found  himself  just  in  the  midst  of  opening  his  mouth  to  say  something  —  something  filled  with  unnecessary  profanities,  perhaps?  —  but  quickly  decided  against  it  when  she  slid  in  her  final  rebuttal.  more  so  he  was  stunned  silent  rather  than  anything  else.  the  insinuation  that  he  was  a  “super  good  guy”  on  the  inside  was  enough  to  make  him  physically  sick.

❝       that’s  fucking  disgusting.       ❞     and  the  way  that  he  folded  over  at  the  waist,  clutching  his  stomach  with  one  hand  while  making  gagging  expressions  only  punctuated  that.  perhaps  an  overly  dramatic  course  of  action,  but  then  again,  that  was  just  mjf.

it would be surprising if anna had gotten a genuine compliment from him. the sarcasm makes more sense, the general air of i don't care makes more sense. though, maybe she'd unrealistically hoped for more. wouldn't let disappointment deter her, and wouldn't let his bad attitude tear her down. kill 'em with kindness, right ? rolls her eyes ( contrary to trying to keep it kind, ) " a dumb blonde joke the best you can do ? i'm kind of disappointed, i thought you were the best of the best at this kind of thing. "

" i dunno, sounds like you care enough to watch what i'm doing, so i'll take it " genuine smile despite herself. genuine smile despite the air of superiority he seemed to think he had, anna knew better. behind all that gruffness, anna’d like to think there really was something good behind those eyes. or maybe she needed to stop mindlessly seeing the best in everyone. particularly those who called themselves devils.

actually  ... it  probably  would  kill  him  to  shut  up.  he  tried  it  before,  and  the  results  were  astoundingly  less  than  satisfactory.  suffice  it  to  say  that  max  promised  himself  that  he  would  never  do  it  again.  the  great  irony  of  all  this  was  that  instead  of  expressing  —  or  defending  —  himself,  maxwell  stood  quiet.  he  actually  shut  up,  tapping  his  fingers  on  his  lips  and listened  patiently  as  she  went  on  hurling  her  insults  at  him  —  very  much  mid  insults,  but  insults  nonetheless.  and  all  the  while,  he  tried  his  best  to conceal  the  amusement  from  making  its  appearance  on  his  face.

because  he  was  amused.  very  much  amused.

she  looked  as  if  she  was  dangerously  close  to  popping  a  blood  vessel  —  not  that  max  really  gave  a  shit,  that  was  her  business.  on  the  contrary,  he  was  having  the  time  of  his  life.  and  it  seemed  the  more  that  she  ranted,  the  more  he  enjoyed  it.

❝       you  done  yet?  you  get  everything  out  of  your  system?       ❞       he  asked,  his  eyebrows  raised  in  mock  concern.       ❝       because,  you  know,  it  actually  is  a little  bit  concerning  when  you’re  over  here  loosing  all  that  passion  and  energy  on  someone  you  claim  to  be  irrelevant.  you  could’ve  just  told  me  that  you  loved  me,  and  you  would’ve  saved  your  breath.  i  didn’t  think  you  were  so  eager  about  giving  it  away  like  that  —  what  the  fuck.      ❞

there were days when even the self confessed queen of pretty pink ego's wasn't in the mood to battle, didn't want a war of words or a game of one ups, and yet max? that was something he ALWAYS waned. it came naturally, effortlessly, pulled it off as well as each other, except today her annoyance outweighed the sass. ❛ you know for ONCE it wouldn't kill you to shut up ❜ rushed and huffed words, practically a groan within her exhale as she's glaring behind thick lashes. ❛ do you even see yourself right now? ❜ poison laced remarks flew before her brain could catch up, leave silence on the tip of her tongue instead, which WOULD have been for the better. ❛ you make ANOTHER return with the goofiest haircut i've literally ever seen, and suddenly you're above everyone again? ❜ can of worms truly opened, chin raised upwards to the air, her own sense of self worth practically screaming. ❛ i'm more relevant than you right now, and you're mad about it, THAT'S the truth ... jealousy is super ugly on you, max.. ❜

he  opened  his  mouth  to  say  something,  thought  better  of  it  and  closed  his  mouth  again.  then  he  thought  about  it  once  more  and  realized fuck  it.  it wouldn’t  be  the  first  time  that  max’s  tendency  to run his  mouth  at  the  most  inappropriate  times  has  gotten  him  into  trouble,  and  what’s  more,  it  certainly wouldn’t  be  the  last  time  that  he  proverbially  bit  off  more  than  he  can  chew.

❝      it  was  a  joke,  dude.      ❞       he  repeats  himself,  his  voice  lowered  significantly  as  if  trying  desperately  to  sound  sympathetic.  always  the  victim  —  that  was  the  name  of  the  game  of  charades  that  he  was  playing.       ❝       it’s  not  my  fault  that  you  managed  to  kill  your  own  sense  of  humor  during  one  of  your  fucking  mass  murder  rampages  or  whatever  the  fuck.       ❞

it  was  no  more  than  the  same  dance;  the  same  tired  out  shtick  that  people  tried  to  unsuccessfully  pull  off  time  and  time  again.  wah,  wah,  mjf  did  this  or  that.  woe  to  me.  all  that  shit.  although  it  was,  admittedly,  a  difficult  concept  to  grasp  at  first;  max  could  say  that  he  came  as  close  to  an  understanding  as  possible.  that  being  that  it  was  the  easy  thing  to  do.  no  one  liked  to  look  in  the  mirror  and  point  out  their  own  faults,  so  they  often  projected  them  onto  others.  it  was  a  coward  thing  to  do,  but  people  were  cowards.  after  all,  what  did  tony  montana  say  about  pointing  fingers  and  calling  others  the  bad  guy?

moxley’s   never   been   one   to   underestimate   anyone–   well,   perhaps   one   time.   that   one   fucking   time   that   still   haunts   him   …   would,   perhaps,   haunt   him   until   it   got   him   and   ate   him   up   for   good.   that   one   time   he’d   underestimated   the   rat   that   seth   rollins   was.   had   underestimated   the   willingness   to   betray   a   friendship   that   he   so   rarely   let   himself   fall   into.   he   never   fell   into   one   again   after   that–   not   like   that.   not   blindly   and   naively,   not   dumbly   and   idiotically   like   he   had   for   the,   back   then,   two   toned   piece   of   trash   that   seth   rollins   was.   revenge   had   been   sweet,   so   fucking   sweet   that   it   never   really   fucking   mattered   that   the   obsession   made   them   call   him   lunatic.   he   knows,   at   heart,   that   he   isn’t.   he’s   not   crazy.   and   he’s   not   stupid.

if  he  sounded  a  little  bit  hypocritical  that  was  because  he  was.  what  was hypocrisy  to  him  anyway  other  than  something  he  usually turned  a  blind  eye  to?  advice  and  criticism  was  something  to  be given  — definitely  not  something  to  be  received.  besides,  he  never  did  anything  wrong.  ever.  in  his  entire  life.  and  he  definitely  didn’t  need  someone  like  mariah, of all  people,  to  try  to  point  out  his nonexistent  faults.
