Marketing and Consumer Research Analysis
This has been an interesting month to say the least! First and foremost, I had to retake the course from not successfully completing in November. Upon originally creating my Mastery timeline, I had three main objectives for this course. They were to determine differences between public relations and marketing, understanding strategies such as SMART goals and PESO models, and identifying detrimental marketing factors in order to conduct a successful campaign.
Although these objectives weren’t primarily taught throughout this course, I learned that Marketing and Consumer Research Analysis is more analytic and reliant on utilizing several sources to prove arguments and formulate steps towards campaigns based on prior knowledge and proven results from previous research.
Throughout this course, I enhanced my knowledge on target market/audience, buyer personas, SMART goals, and more. Later on, I reviewed a case study regarding airlines in relation to disabled travelers and learned how to create an executive summary for my Capstone client.
This has been one of the hardest months of grad school yet! I have struggled with time-management and balance between school and work since the beginning of the program. However, a combination of lack of understanding and failure to plan have ultimately caused me to underperform this month.
During Week 3, I failed to complete secondary references, create infographics, or make necessary changes provided from my instructor’s feedback from the previous week. Although I’ve created one infographic in a previous PR course, I was unsure of what information to add for the two infographics required in my summary. Thankfully, Professor Palmisano was available for me to meet with her and she gave me sound advice to be successful not only in this course, but for the rest of my mastery journey.
For the remainder of my program, I vow to be more focused on my studies and organized. I also want to be more proactive about voicing concerns about assignments with my instructors well before they are due. Although I’m currently working part-time, I must reduce my hours in order to successfully complete the last 5 months of classes. I want to execute on what I’ve learned, and continue to excel in the rest of my courses. I look forward to seeing what Media Relations has in store!

Acing Social Media Metrics and ROI
Prior to taking this class, I had little to no idea of the impact social media metrics and ROI had on public relations. ROI means return on investment, or an evaluation of your organization’s efficiency. ROI can also be an equation of profit over the cost of an investment multiplied by 100.
Three original expectations I set to learn in this class were determining how metrics are tracked and measured, ability to prove the importance of analytics from a PR perspective, and understanding and negotiating monetary value based on tools I’ve learned throughout this course. I can honestly say that my expectations were exceeded as I learned all of this and more!
For example, I learned more about Google Analytics and got a certification from the Analytics Academy! Before taking Social Media Metrics and ROI, the only experience I had with using Google Analytics was for creating monthly analytics reports for an internship with Winrock International.
Another outcome of taking this course was understanding KPIs and their significance in our profession. I originally became familiar with the term KPI when I was a customer service representative for Verizon Wireless. Each KPI would determine our performance as a rep and potentially allowed for us to get an annual bonus dependent on if we were meeting/exceeding performance goals. It’s no different with public relations. Different departments have different KPIs. However, each KPI must match the business objectives and goals.
One last thing that I learned in ROI was SEO. SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. In a nutshell, search engine optimization can help take your organization to the next level! When your website is formatted properly and in a manner in which consumers are able to find your website as a result of their search queries, the more exposure your organization will receive.
In conclusion, everything that I’ve learned in this course will help me professionally because I understand key concepts to social media such as which channels are the best for my organization, the best times to post, the type of content, how to measure these metrics, and more. Knowing the importance of these strategies and tactics and being able to explain what and why these tools are significant to the C-suite could potentially be a determining factor in whether or not my position remains with the organization(s) I work for.

Why IPR is Crucial to PR Professionals
Innovative Public Relations Resources and Tools gave me a lot of insight about the power of social media in this day and age, and how to use these free platforms to build my brand! In the past, public relations practitioners distributed messages through one-way communication tactics. Nowadays, public relations practitioners also strategically communicate with their audience, and in return, the audience is able to communicate with practitioners and their organizations directly.
Honestly, the online course description does not give IPR its just due! Prior to taking this course, three of my original goals in this course were to learn definitions and utilize RSS feeds and HTML format, create and curate content, and apply SMART goals to my personal life.
I began this course unsure if I knew about or was being capable of completing future assignments because of the description. To my surprise, I had already performed some of these tactics before!
For instance, I was already familiar with using WordPress, so I knew how to create a website from scratch and publish original blog posts. When it came to curating content, my journalistic instincts set in; to speculate and create conversations about relevant topics with my peers!
During Week 4, an online reading briefly discussed using SMART goals to create a social media strategy. Before taking this class, I wanted to take initiative and create SMART goals and apply them to my personal life such as planning ahead, being more organized, and managing my time better. While I did successfully submit all but one assignment on time, I struggled with balancing school and work this month. I am happy that I reached out to Professor Foley for advice when I first began having issues instead of waiting for things to get worse.
What I actually learned in this course was how to take my professional brand to the next level by creating or revamping professional social media handles, creating a new professional media website, and schedule posts through social media management websites/applications!
Before starting IPR, I had existing professional Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. During this course, I created professional business Instagram and Facebook profiles. As Professor Foley discussed, it is important to establish yourself online as a public relations professional so that you are viewed as credible and respected. It is equally important to create posts that cater to your platform and your target audience.
Next, I learned how to create my own media website. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a while, but wanted to wait until “the right time” to do so. This class definitely gave me the push I needed to build my professional brand. My media site included a professional-looking selfie, an About Me, a YouTube brand video, examples of previous work, contact information, social media handles, and more!
Finally, I learned how to schedule posts through Hootsuite and Later. Before taking this course, I was already vaguely familiar with Hootsuite. However, I had never registered or schedule posts before. Later was new to me. The importance of scheduling posts is to reach my audience during times when they are most engaged. Although scheduling posts takes a lot of preparation and effort, it could make the difference in whether or not your business/brand succeeds.
One way that the information I learned in IPR will help my professional career as a public relations professional is by building a solid foundation for me to continue growing upon. Even though some information was not new to me, I had a better appreciation and understanding for the tools I used and their significance. I want to continue building my brand through social media so that by the time I graduate, it becomes second nature. In the meantime, Social Media Metrics and ROI, here I come!

Legal Aspects of Media
In this course I learned about different legal issues and how they can potentially affect my role as a journalist/PR professional. Throughout this course, I read several different cases from our course readings and also researched and found additional cases in which I shared in my discussion board posts! Overall, I was pleased with not only the material, but also interacting with classmates and understanding their point of view on certain cases and subjects.
My favorite assignment in this course was my Week 2 Research Case Study Presentation. Although I’m not the biggest fan of being on camera, I enjoy doing coursework that pushes me outside of my comfort zone and help build my confidence. I also enjoyed using Zoom to record my presentation and iMovie to edit. This was my first time uploading to my personal YouTube page for the first time in 15 years! This definitely gives me more initiative to study Youtubers and other influencers so that I can eventually follow their footsteps!
I believe that the most helpful topic discussed in this course is Copyright. It’s extremely important as an individual or business to protect works that belong to you. It’s unfair for others to profit monetarily from work that they did not create especially without receiving permission beforehand.
The knowledge that I acquired this month will prepare me to handle potential legal issues in the communications industry by providing me a solid foundation to reference for several topics such as the First Amendment, FOIA, copyright, and defamation. Although I was already familiar with most of these topics, it’s always beneficial to have a refresher and get more in-depth details. It’s better to know these laws on the front end and do business in compliance than be unaware and blindsided with lawsuits/terminations on the back end!
When it comes to my Mastery Timeline, everything appears to be falling in place! This time last month, I was desperate to find more work related in my field. This month, I was able to meet and begin interning with a local entrepreneur with his own marketing company that has his own radio show here in Little Rock. For the past four weeks, I have recorded and edited his 30-minute shows. I’ve also reviewed and analyzed his clients’ social media profiles and working towards managing their social media in the future. I look forward to continuing to work with Mr. Gavin and continue perfecting my craft in a field that I love! I can’t wait to see what’s in store next month!

Writing for Interactive Media
In Writing for Interactive Media, I was reminded of the essence of journalism and storytelling. I got a refresher on what makes stories newsworthy, how to interview, the importance of attributing sources, and how to write for a specific platform and audience.
Prior to beginning this class, I assumed that we would be referencing the textbook for each of our assignments, however, I appreciated all of the resources and articles provided each week.
During the first week, we focused on our personal About Me research and first draft. I never realized the impact and details put in to an effective About Me page! The following weeks we provided story ideas and our plans on interviewing, promoting, and distributing stories. On the last week, we brainstormed future stories that we are interested in creating in our next course, created the final draft of our About Me, and finalized Story 2.
Outside of school, I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied for a paid part-time marketing/social-media internship with a local apartment property management. I was selected for an interview with the marketing director. Although my interview wasn’t the worst, it could have been if I prepared more in advance.
Throughout this course, my faith was restored in my ability to find and/or create original stories that are interesting and worth reading. My biggest issue is getting started and not knowing who and where to reach out to obtain credible, reliable information for my stories.

INTENTION STATEMENT
Throughout the course of this year, I intend on mastering the fields of journalism and public relations. I will do this by not only trusting the information that I’ve learned so far, but also applying it to my real life regardless of whether or not I’m actively working in these fields. I expect to learn more about all parts of public relations from event planning to crisis management to social media analytics to running campaigns and more. Since I minored in public relations during undergrad, I will continue to pay close attention and build upon my existing knowledge of this subject. I plan on keeping my mind open to new possibilities and searching deep within myself to discover my Life’s Task.
During this Mastery Journey, I have to be honest with myself, accept responsibility, and hold myself accountable when I make a mistake. I cannot be too hard on myself nor can I give up entirely. I HAVE COME TOO FAR TO QUIT NOW! FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION! Feelings of doubt and being inadequate may occur, but it’s my job to remain faithful and committed to successfully completing my program.
I will find balance with school and work and adjust accordingly. I will push myself, but not to the point of feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. I will not allow issues beyond my control to affect me mentally and underperform in my most important tasks. I must live one day at a time and not worry about yesterday or tomorrow’s obstacles.
By the end of my Mastery Journey I expect to finish knowing more about my fields of study and myself than ever before. I also want to be closer if not have successfully started my own brand in my field either as an entertainment journalist/publicist or my own blog.

About Me
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky
Hey guys and gals! My name is De’Vontae Jackson. I’m obsessed with entertainment news! I also like fashion, beauty, arts, and more. Creating and curating content on social media is my specialty. My dream is to own my own media company and/or public relations agency.
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to become a journalist. English has always been my favorite subject, and I love to write!
Throughout school, I took every opportunity there was to participate in my schools' news, read announcements, or volunteer in my church’s media ministry.
During college at the University at Central Arkansas, I continued to learn photography, video-editing, and writing in active voice. Additionally, I became producer of my college school news and interned at a local news station KATV.
After graduation, I landed a paid internship in communications for Winrock International. Winrock is a non-profit organization that works on several projects across the world that encourage entrepreneurship, sustainable water, ending world hunger, and more. This allowed me to utilize all of the skills I had learned in school and apply them professionally.
As a young professional, I have more of an entrepreneurial spirit now than ever! I don’t want to be just an employee for the rest of my life; I want to be a BOSS! I want to make a 6-figure salary and create generational wealth.
I want to change the way media is negatively perceived. I want to be your one-stop-shop for entertainment news. Ultimately, once you’re done viewing my blog, I want you to feel inspired, happy, smarter, and better than before.
Tell me what you think below! Follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook!
