Text
At that point in the day, Dexter Saville had thrown up three times and once more the night before. Sending a quick text to both Bennett and Logan (Fuck me I’m about to go do it. Text you soon.), he stared at his reflection and told himself that he could do this. For the longest time, he held the secret so tightly to his chest that he feared it might have permanently bonded itself to the skin there. Yet he craved nothing more than having a place where he could be himself - and really truly himself - that wasn’t his dark, quiet bedroom next door to his sister’s who played her own top 40 music far too loudly for him to focus on his movies sometimes.
He thought maybe it would be amazing to be able to talk about being gay in his living room, or express how absolutely hot he found that guy from The Carbonaro Effect. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this would be maybe having a place to enjoy Bennett’s company that wasn’t his bedroom in the middle of the night when no one would think much of a few bumps in the night. Wistfully, he sometimes found himself imagining sitting with Benny on the couch, holding hands and eating pizza with his family. Yet none of that would happen if he didn’t get over his own terror and just tell the truth.
So after one more pep talk and a buzz of his phone which he could only assume was a good luck text from either his best friend or his boyfriend, he pushed past his door and marched into his kitchen. Subtlety was something he’d never been all that good at so his attempt at acting cool was immediately called out by his younger sister Maddie.
“What’s wrong?,” she asked from the living room, gaining the attention of his parents as well.
“Hmm, well… can we have a… uh… could we maybe have a little family meeting?”
So they sat around their little kitchen table, Maddie filing her nails as his mom and dad smiled at him. He smiled back with as much energy as he could come up with.
“So… I know you guys know I’ve kind of been… seeing somebody…”
“Is it that Logan girl? She always has been lovely to you!”
“No mom she uh… she actually has a girlfriend…”
“Oh! Good for her!” As his mom spoke, a bit of relief found its way into his mind.
“Yeah! Yeah it’s-it’s great, isn’t it?” He looked to his dad for his reaction and the man nodded.
“If she’s happy then yes, it’s great,” he told Dexter.
“Cool, yeah cool totally so uh… so anyway! I uh… thought you might want to meet this ‘somebody’ maybe I don’t know maybe if you think you want to.”
“Well of course we do!”
Glancing and nodding towards his mom he tapped his fingers against the table.
“Cool cool cool well there’s just this uh… this one thing I guess maybe you should probably know first is uh… it’s just-”
“Oh my god,” Maddie interrupted him. “Just tell them you’re gay already!”
“I-!” Dexter exclaimed in shock.
“Well we already know that!”
“WHAT?!”
“Son please, your first crush was Uncle Jesse from Full House,” his father inserted.
“YOU REALLY KNEW?! All this time?!”
“Well of course! Didn’t you know we knew?”
“Why would I know you knew if I didn’t tell you?”
His mother laughed softly and covered her mouth as she did. “Well I’m sorry if you had some big speech planned, son. We’ve really, sort of known for a while, Sweetheart.”
“And you aren’t mad?”
“Why would we be mad? Your sister likes boys too and we aren’t mad.”
To that, Dexter didn’t have a reply. Because really they were right. There was nothing to be mad about. He had just assumed that there would be.
“I mean… I don’t know, I guess… thank you, though… for understanding. A lot of people don’t get that support so…”
“But tell us, who’s the lucky guy?!”
“Well… the thing is he’s not… out. Like nobody but me knows that he’s gay well and Logan but that’s because I told her right away on accident but… anyway I don’t think you guys would even know him, but even if you do or even if you don’t you can’t tell anyone what’s happening and I’m completely fine with that, the whole keeping it a secret thing. His sexuality isn’t mine or any of ours to share so…”
“You can tell us, Sweetie. We won’t tell anyone else.”
“I know you won’t but Maddie spills any secret she’s ever been told.”
“Hey! I haven’t told anyone you were gay!”
“Except for mom and dad literally just now before I could!”
“Ugh fine! I won’t tell!”
Dexter huffed and shook his head. “Look, I think for everyone’s benefit, I’ll keep his name to myself for the time being. However, all you need to know is that he’s amazing. Really, truly… I mean… we call and Skype all the time and we don’t really have dates in real life but sometimes we’ll watch movies together over FaceTime. We just… really get along well, really really well. And I guess I’m just hoping that maybe he could come over sometimes… so we could have some together time in real life not over the phone…” He spoke with the knowledge that they had no idea that Benny seemed to be over more nights than not, making out with him until the moon had even gotten tired of watching them.
“I’d just like to have somewhere that I know we can be… a couple. I know it’s a lot all at once and-”
“Oh nonsense, as soon as he’s comfortable with meeting us, he’s as welcome as Logan and her girlfriend are. This is an open and accepting house.”
While Dexter beamed happily, Maddie perked up.
“Great,” she said. “Because I want a tattoo!”
“In your dreams,” their dad said, and Dex laughed.
“Um I’m… gonna… go let him know it went well, thank… thank you guys so much… really.” With that, he threw his arms around his father and let his mother join the hug. It was held for a few moments, Dexter relishing in this overwhelming sensation of acceptance in their arms.
After the hug broke and a kiss on his cheek from his mom, Dexter rushed back to his room and grabbed his phone.
To Benny 👯♂️: it went so so well!!!! Like so well! They said as soon as your comfy enough to you’re soooo welcome for dinner!
To Logan 👨👧👸🏻💖😍:

"Stop staying up so late. I can never fall asleep." - benny
A chuckle passed Dexter’s lips as his boyfriend spoke. He couldn’t help but shake his head as he did so.
“I’m almost done Benny,” Dex whined, squinting his eyes at his laptop as his fingers clicked away.
“You say that every time,” Benny replied as he nuzzled his head into Dex’s shoulder. With a final click, Dexter was done and he shut his laptop with a smile, looking over at the other boy.
“You’re so impatient,” he teased, rolling over onto his side and smiling at the silhouette of the boy beside him.
“No I’m a fucking growing boy who needs his sleep.” Benny tried to sound angry but it was never convincing enough to be taken as genuine anger.
“Growing boy?” Dexter practically guffawed at the phrase, shaking his head as he did so. “You’re such a goddamn nerd, and besides if you grow anymore I’m making you wear a bright orange hat to keep airplanes from hitting you.” Dexter saw him roll his eyes with a dumb grin before a yawn disrupted the slight smirk. In a rather smooth move, Dexter sat up at the same time that Benny held an arm out. Dex had decided long ago that Bennett was a much better option than the body pillow he’d been using before. So he pressed himself up against the boy’s cozy body, buried beneath a sweatshirt and his soccer shorts which made him an even comfier pillow.
Bennett’s arm closed around him and Dex smiled, sliding one of his hands across his chest and nuzzling his head into Benny’s shoulder. There was a time when he never really thought he’d have something like this, where he feared being alone forever. For a long time, actually, he thought he’d be stuck in some rut of never finding anyone else who felt the same way he did when he saw an attractive guy running down the beach. And yet there he was, making a pillow out of a boy who he’d never even allowed himself to think about in such a way.
“Wake me up before you leave tomorrow?,” he asked quietly, breaking the silence and causing Benny’s eyes to flutter back open.
“Yeah of course. Don’t I always?”
A quiet chuckle left Dexter’s lips as Benny smiled at him. “Yeah, I guess so. Just making sure I didn’t miss your bedhead,” he teased, letting his eyes close as he smiled over everything about that moment. “Hey Benny?”
“Hmm?”
“Thanks for being so good to me...”
Benny didn’t have much of a response, thinking about all the times he’d stood by and let his friends trip Dexter or leer at his best friend Logan. He was never sure if he deserved such thanks, so he just kissed the top of Dexter’s head with a smile.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “Now please, Babe, sleep. You’re gonna get bags under your eyes and those are not cute.”
With a roll of his eyes, Dexter finally snuggled all the way into his boyfriend’s side. “Okay, good night Bennett.”
He could hear the smile in Bennett’s voice as he replied.
“Good night, Dex.”
