Week 15! Episode 4 Coming Soon!
Hey All! This upcoming Episode will be my last one for my podcast series! Our guest for the last episode is Pele Awards Chair, Paul Lam. Paul is all the away in Oahu and he also gave me the opportunity to be an intern foe The Pele Awards for my Senior Practicum! Paul has been the Pele Awards Chair Man for the last 12 years. He opened the the high school division for The Pele Awards back in 2018 to showcase the amazing work of high school students!
If you do not know the Pele Awards honors the best advertising and design work for individuals of Hawaii from high school students, college students, and industry professionals and is one of 15 district competitions for American Advertising Awards.
Look forward to listen about how art competitions like the Pele Awards affect and provide opportunities to high school students and teachers!
I had sent this draft to Keola this weekend for some cleaning. I look forward to hearing his amazing work and cleaned up audio and then I have to clean some audio and conversations make it flow together
Some Aha moments from this last interview with Paul Lam who also serves the role as my practicum advisor for Pele awards was just listening to his goals and aspirations on his role running these art competitions! He mentions praising the high schools and teachers and how without them the Pele Awards would not exist and how amazed he the caliber of work students put out at a young age and how he hopes opening Pele awards to high schoolers also effects college division entries! Its just amazing to listen and hear a guy like Paul talking about how impactful the high schools are and the work they submit and even praising my work this semester! What an amazing way to end my internship, podcast, and overall research this semester.

Week 14 Pt.2! Final Practicum Update
PRACTICUM UPDATE! // Hi all! The last couple weeks for my practicum for Pele Awards has primarily focused on promoting the high school website reveal, virtual Facebook show, and tickets the live show since the promotion of entries has ended. These show information has been changed numerous times in the last couple weeks so I had to always be on it in making up to date for people from the public to purchase tickets. I also had to find new creative ways to make the promotion of the award show engaging through stories and post so they can purchase tickets. I have also learned the difficulty it takes to even just judge hundreds and hundreds of work within a group of small judges. So its amazing to be part of the wheels and see how all the process goes into choosing winners especially the high school divisions where there was a 768 entries! A 36% increase from last year!
Some aha moments is learning to mitigate certain ad sense for certain post regarding competitions. As I focused my ads primary on a demographic like high schoolers it captured the eyes a lot from the high schoolers and teachers versus professionals or college students. I have also learned the overall difficult process it goes into choosing and judging winners for high schoolers and high schools. Its amazing to see the amount of industry professionals working together to judge their work and how LONG it takes to conclude judging! Being an educator I cant wait to see the announcement of high schools winners especially because I know a lot of my students entered their work and because of the amount of entries this year!

WEEK13! Pele Awards High School Best of Show Video Meeting
PRACTICUM UPDATE! // As mentioned before I am currently working on a video package on this years Pele Awards Best of Show High School Winner announcement. This video I am working on will be showcased on their live event May 21. I had finally met with the Pele Awards Creative team - Ryan Kawamoto (Writer) for Pele Awards and Richard Fraioli (Designer) via zoom after only communicating on email. The gave me critiques in implementing and announcing what is the NMG scholarship in the video, use of supers, and how I can improved the pacing for the video. This led me to met the  sponsoring scholarship  organization NMG Network. This is where I met Jason Cutinella founder and CEO of NMG Network!.
A aha moment from this last week was seeing how amazing involved organizations like NMG network in creating scholarships for the Pele Awards where both college and high school best of show students win $500 for their creative work. Even with meeting with the creative team, its awesome to finally meet professionals who been doing this for Pele Awards for a long time, its honestly been a amazing working along them! I also got asked by Richard and Paul to get the UHWO ACM logo on their banner for the live event and Sharla had provided me the logo to use for their banner.  So awesome to represent UHWO ACM in Pele Awards 2022 award ceremony!

Week11! PracticumUpdate
Hi everyone! The last couple weeks has been hectic for my practicum with Pele Awards. As Submissions closed on March 15 we were heavily promoting instgram post and stories to get submissions with a highly focus on increasing high school! This consisted of posting 4-5 times a week to remind high schools and teachers/students to get their work in!  A aha moment from this overall last couple weeks of getting submissions in for Pele Awards was the statistics! After meeting with my practicum advisor Paul and had concluded that we almost hit 800 high school enteries vs 568 last year! Paul and the creative team and concluded that it was really great for my idea to highlight past winners as it gives a great reminder and recognition on what these amazing students can do and submit! It was really awesome to be part of the contribution of the surplus of entries the year! After submissions where done I also created and posted thank yous for all the entries across all divisions for entering this year What I am currently next woking on is promoting the ticket sales for the live event for May 21st! along with the high school video where I am heavily working with the Pele Awards Creative team!

Last episode with a high school was very popular and gotten a lot of of positive feedback from former teachers and peers so Im excited to put this podcast with a college student! Some Aha moments from continuing this interviews is the overall experience and takes they got from competing and seeing how amazing teachers play a huge role in shaping not only one but many students to not only be amazing creatives but young adults. SPRINGBREAK! Update // Social Media Spotlight!
Hi everyone, here is part of a spring break update I been working heavily on! As mentioned in the last meeting I have create a series section for my social media where highlighting pass and present high school art competition competitor's and reflecting on their experience on competing in high school and how it affected them. During this whole Spring break I have been in contacts with many high school art competition competitors who has graduated all over the state of Hawaii. So far Ive gotten from Maui, Oahu, and Kauai.   For the highlighting section I have asked them various background questions on their past of competing/high school, their overall takes, and how it impacted them. So far these are the most engaging post of my social media as it gives a lot of depth and REAL insights of past high school students of hawaii and how it impacted them! I plan on posting these once a week every tuesday/wednesday! Here is how the layout looks and various questions I ask my interviewees. Some platforms i am using to interview these people are discord, instagram, email, etc. Its very awesome to see everyones different takes on how art competitions affected them from the competitors, experiences, awards, teachers etc! Below we have our classmate Nadine Castillo and a graphic designer friend of mine Rowell Rabino who is a first year student at UH Maui College majoring in their creative media program! Thank you to both of them!

Week 9! Update
The last couple weeks since a practicum update! Hawaii STN and Skills USA competitions ended with their ceremonies so alot of my tasks were going in meetings via zoom creating last materials to promote and support the competitions! Hawaii STN went live at Waikiki and remotely where the Hawaii Students competed with students all over the nation remotely!
Hawaii STN // My last couple projects was last final meetings before competiton went live, finalizing and designing event collateral such as banners, promo signages, and brand time sheets for the students, teachers, and guest to see and use! // It was amazing to see the schools use the shirts and IG filters i have created, credited to Waianae High school screenshot! It was also awesome to see Governor David Ige next to the brand logo i created for this years Hawaii STN as he gave a speech! Lastly UHWO Academy For Creative Media took picture of the banner i have created for this event as they had a session for the high schoolers! Overall working with the various teachers, meeting with them weekly, getting critiques, numerous jobs and projects and seeing everything come to life in an person competition since 2019 has been amazing to be part of! SkillsUSA Hawaii // The last couple weeks for my practicum was very hectic! I hopped onto meeting with the Skills USA student advisors and Skills USA teachers who help hold the competition!  Most of the competition material I helped such as modifying the google sites, creating a way for the judges to judge students using google forms, and creating award ceremony template! Days before the ceremony and the last project I worked on, I and the Skills USA advisors worked on the Awards ceremony where they announce the winners per competition! We spent hours on collecting names, placing in the right spot. I was the designer for the 2022 awards ceremony presentation that was showcased for this years competition! Overall it was amazing to see so many teachers and students involved in catering for the competitors especially during COVID times, so many teachers take a lot of time after working hours to get the competition for the kids. I truly enjoyed this experience working with SkillsUSA Hawaii!
Pele Awards // As the success of getting viewers and engagement running Pele Awards social media in promoting this years competition was awesome to see. Slow at first but as consistency appears more and more engagement came! It’s amazing to see Paul my advisor challenge me in this scenario in marketing and advertising for this years competition and see the success through my creativity! I am in a consistent roll of creating weekly social media post and stories! Deadlines for entries are next week so we are really pushing to get a lot of entries from a lot more high schools and college students to enter!

Week 8! Update
An update for my overall practicum/deliverable project as my research, journey , and brand evolves tremendously I had changed my name for my project name to Growing Creativity! Me and Sharla has been in talks via email in updating the name for some time from Creative Adolescents to now Growing Creativity! I feel this name is way more fitting for my overall deliverables such as my podcast and social media, practicum research connects and ties everything together from what I have been not only creating but documenting! I had let my followers on Instagram know on the new changes, and also create a logo for my overall research brand and also for my podcast: Growing Creativity Podcast.  My new ig link is “ https://www.instagram.com/growing.creativity_/”
The logo is surfaced around a G + C with elements of art such as a video play button and a designer pen tool . I have created a logo guideline for me to follow in terms of having a consistent social media and brand for my followers to learn and see how my project evolves! Here is how the logo for my research looks with color variations along with the secondary logo for the podcast “Growing Creativity Podcast” and a documentation of guidelines for my overall brand to keep everything consistent and professional! I have also attached screenshots of introducing these new logos on instagram!

WEEK 7! Podcast Deliverable Update 2/21
For part of deliverables aside from my practicums, I am tying my research with my practicum internships with doing a audio podcast interviewing various high school/college students and teachers who competed/mentored, and even a organizer who are surrounded or have experience around these competitions like Pele Awards, STN, and Skills USA, etc. I went to work and started planning my overall podcast series deliverable such as podcast outlines, intro and questions to interview my guests around my research on art competitions in high school. I also had conversations with Sharla in terms of changing the name of my series and social media. After talking we had conclude to do “Growing Creativitys”.   My new ig link is “ https://www.instagram.com/growing.creativity_/” - After planning my outline and created my intro, I had contacted my first guest who is my student and a Senior at Maui High School, Faith Soliven. She has competed in numerous digital media art competitions both State and National level and I had asked her questions about how these competitions are beneficial and how it impacted her as a student/young adult. I had recorded the podcast two ways using both voice memos and iPhone recording, the newer iPhone sounded way better than my voice memos on my Macbook pro. It ended up being a very informative and fun 30min podcast and had cleaned it up the audio in  premiere and had added some intro and outro music transitions. I then had sent a rough draft to Sharla and she suggested adding ambience sound in the background so it’s not to quiet. Although its gonna be posted, I have attached a recording ending snip-it check it out! I plan on posting a promo of my podcast series this week on my social media! and this should be up on Spotify first week of March link to Anchor.fm! I plan on getting 3-4 podcast episodes by the early May! I look to next interview a college student next, Paul lam (Pele Awards Organizer), and possible High School instructor.

WEEK 6! Practicum
Practicum Internships: Pele Awards, Skills USA Hawaii, Hawaii Creative Media - STN // Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/creative.adolescents/ This last couple weeks has been very hectic since early-mid February is where these competitions go live! So having assigned projects in creating marketing graphics  promo/material to use had to quick and communicated. As I hop on Zoom meetings with the competition organizers, you can feel the stress from all the wheels behind it such as the teachers +  involved, as theres so much that goes behind these students but its amazing to see the teamwork and networking that goes along for these high school students. As I intern for these organizations I found out so much about the networking around these competitions not only with teachers but students and industry professionals, and even the importance of how students gain positive outcomes from these competitions. Internship Projects!  Pele Awards: For Pele Awards, I was now assigned to contact the past high school Best of Show winners and create reflection/catch up social media post of the past winners. It was hard to contact every past winner as not a lot of them live in Hawaii anymore. A close friend of mine who graduated Maui High in 2020 is now at San Diego State University, named Jillian Ped who won best of show in 2019 so it was great to contact her and interview her via zoom. Jillian was previously in one of my projects for Sharlas CM 359 class its awesome to be using her for my internship! my friend Jillian won a $1000 NMG scholarship prize when she won best of show in 2019. I also got to green light last week to start posting with on Pele Awards social media like instagram and facebook so its great to learn and watch social media analytics and see my work on this level. My graphic I designed was also sent to to a mailing list of high school+college teachers of Hawaii and industry professionals!  Pele Awards IG: https://www.instagram.com/peleawards/ Hawaii Creative Media STN Hawaii// Working with the HCM has been going great and their competitions goes live this week Thursday so the last weeks has been project after project! Some of the projects I been assigned was creating various an Instagram story template using the theme I had created for the shirt for the students/people that will be at the days of the event at Waikiki, Honolulu. I have attached some sample examples.  The actual shirts came in for the Maui High Students who will competing remotely due to covid! Its awesome to look forward to the students of Hawaii competing this week/weekend that will end up wearing this shirt I designed   Skills USA// As the the competitions started I finished filming and getting clips from the Skills USA student advisors and edited on premiere pro and after couple revisions I finished up the video the opening ceremony for Skills USA. It was definitely a challenge for me as my main skillsets is graphic design. It was then posted on the Hawaii State Career Technical Student Organization Google site to be shown to all competitions! I worked with the Skills USA student advisors where they assigned scripts to the individuals. Now competition's are closing and we are organizing winners presentation which will be announced this Thursday!  Working on/Next Task: Create IG post for Pele Awards to showcase the schools that competed last year along with social media stories. Hawaii Creative Media: Creating schedule plans, thank you cards, and banners to be used for competitions. Organize and create winning ceremony presentation!  https://www.instagram.com/creative.adolescents/

WEEK3! Practicum
Practicum Internships: Pele Awards, Skills USA Hawaii, Hawaii Creative Media - STN
My overall experience’s in the first weeks with the remote internship with Pele Awards, Skills USA, and HCM STN has been amazing A lot of these competitions go live within Feb-March, so creating promo and marketing material that utilize my research and to be quick! My overall impression is its amazing to see just the wheels behind each and single competition that makes these competition goes to life! Hopping on different zoom/google meets and meeting teachers and students, industry professionals that come together weekly shows how much goes to work and networking/communication It was also amazing to see how media was organized and documented in the past for continuity such as bleeds, embed fonts, color modes along with learning  strict guidelines of using paid fonts for their brand/marketing.
Internship Projects
Pele Awards// Advisor Paul Lam - Chair of Pele Awards //  Asked to create social media post that can be more engaging and interactive to get more entries/participants. I got to meet the chair and main marketing/designers for Pele Awards. I had also learned that a previous intern came from KCC, so I had created couple social media  stories and social media work using polls and designed a carousel post highlighting last years College Best of Show using this years theme. This required me to go out and contact these best of show winners, so I had to contact Dave Maluyo from KCC New Media Arts. It was challenge to stay within the brand guidelines to make it look like one person do it and so it looks cohesive and consistent.
For HCM-STN// Hawaii Digital Media Teachers // Advisor: Clint Gima - HCM Board // I met the Hawaii Creative Media team that consisted of  digital media teachers across Hawaii DOE. I was asked to design the annual Hawaii Schools Shirt that students and teachers would wear to the competition to the mainland promoting the STN students from Hawaii. I had to go couple revisions, in terms of placement, scale, and design as I had to include sponsoring logos such as Olelo, Hawaii DOE, etc. They will be competition at Waikiki remotely with other schools across the nation,  the competitors and teacher will have a shirt to rep Hawaii where they usually wear to the mainland.
Skills USA// Advisor Leisha Bento - Skills USA Hawaii State Director// I was asked to create a promo video, I had worked with the Skills USA Vice President who is a senior at the school I work with to compile a shot list, we had filmed sequences for a video to be used in the welcoming orientation of Skills USA competitions this week. Through the video I filmed the vice president of Skills USA board who is a senior on Maui, along with communicating the other members who were on Oahu. It was very difficult as working remotely to get clips from other individuals across Hawaii.
Progress/Working Deliverable Projects:
Pele Awards: Social Media Stories + IG Post highlighting college best of show HCM-STN: Promotional Competition Shirt for Hawaii Competitor Skills USA: Screengrab for Promo/Welcome vid
