When your tics wane or become less frequent/complex with age or medication, it’s so weird? Feels like I was over exaggerating or faking? But I Know I wasn’t. Tourette’s is just a funky disorder that fluctuates a lot

shoutout to all my people with invisible disabilities
shoutout to people who don’t feel disabled enough
shoutout to people who have been denied care because they don’t look disabled
shoutout to people who thug it out every single day because the world doesnt stop when you’re disabled no matter how much you wish it would
shoutout to people with no diagnosis but still have symptoms because you don’t need a diagnosis to have symptoms

Fake claiming people who had tics in 2020/21 needs to stop and here's why:
first of all. I'm against fake claiming in general. you have no idea what people's situations or lives look like. you have no right to tell them what medical conditions they do or don't have. but. let's lay out some reasons why you may have seen a lot more people with tics then vs now.
***
- firstly. it was 'trending'. if you were seeking out people with tics to gawk at. you were going to see them.
- talking about tics brings them out. people were making videos and content about their ts/tics, and so naturally, they were ticcing in those videos. that does not mean that they must tic all of the time in order for them to have tics.
- I spent years trying medications, waiting to see a neurologist. getting on different doses, etc. before I found something that works. when I'm on my meds, I usually don't tic hardly at all. that very well could be the case for some of these people as well.
- tic disorders wax and wane. it's a well known part of the disorders. tics can be bad for a while, and then almost non-existent for a while. and then come back. it's normal.
- tics also tend to get worse in times of high stress and anxiety (global pandemic??!)
- tourettes is not the only tic disorder. the options aren't only. tourettes or faker. there is such thing as transient/provisional tic disorder, which is a very real tic disorder that lasts for less than a year. there are also other causes of tics such as fnd.
- it's a well known phenomenon that people's tics sometimes improve in adulthood. it doesn't mean that they were faking before. it just means that they got a lucky break.
***
fake claiming is gross, and this mindset only does harm to the tic disorder community. it's ableist and ignorant to assume someone is faking just because you're uneducated and think that you know more than the person who actually has the disorder.
please try to support the people you know, and the people in your community with tics. it's rough out here for us.

People struggle to grasp the concept that all my conditions affect eachother. OCD intrusive thoughts manifest as coprolalia tics, adhd related frustration and hyperactivity causes tics, tics cause more fatigue, mental health affects tics, stims become tics, tics become stims. Tics affect my speech, adhd affects my sleep which affects my fatigue. ADHD affects my eating, ocd affects my eating, lack of eating equals poor mental health equals more tics and more fatigue.

I hate fake claiming so muuuuch.
I just saw a TikTok from some guy captioned 'that one girl who faked her Tourette's' and he's clearly using it as just an excuse to pretend to have Tourette's because he's made the same video FIVE TIMES in the past few days. And it's just him faking tics the whole time. But its okay!! Because he's saying its to make some of someone else for doing that!! Not to actually do that himself! And the entire comment section is just full of people mentioning different people online who appear to have Tourette's, saying that they're clearly faking for this and that reason, and I don't care if they do or don't, these people don't KNOW that. And I'm pretty confident in that as the reasons they're using are just, parts of having Tourette's. 'It looks forced!!' YEAH. They're fighting their OWN body because they don't want to do that action?? 'So and so has that tic, they're just copying them!!' Do you think only one person can have a tic? Since I bark no one else can?? Tics can mimic things?? There's a reason multiple people with Tourette's tic more when around each other??
Video's like that just encourage fake claiming people, and I just don't care if someone is lying. Ableds are too comfortable with their idea of what being disabled looks like and will get it wrong the majority of the time. I'd rather they believe someone who doesn't have it than challenge someone who does.
