George Nicholas, “Composite News Reports” 2020. Digital Video. In my work I have repurposed archival video footage of news broadcasts from an online database. The footage is arranged and layered so that each of the figures is visible through a cloud of other presenters, showing a ghostly average of an anchor through the visual noise. The sonic component of the work is the original sound from the broadcast which has become unintelligible due to the layering, resembling something closer to white noise than speech. Through the use of layering the recorded sounds and images are dislocated and abstracted from their original source and endowed with new meaning. The work attempts to reflect how excessive information, in this case the continuous and overwhelming stream news can paradoxically leave the viewer less informed, as information disintegrates into noise.
