The thing about the X-Files is that it's monsters and conspiracies for 43 minutes and then you have that one minute between Scully and Mulder. Maybe it's a scene, maybe it's a gesture, maybe it's a sentence, maybe it's a look, but it's the most devastating, oddly-romantic thing you've ever seen and it leaves you gasping for breath.

Poang Summer 2025 Questionnaire

finally getting around to this for secret poang summer pal!! sorry it took me awhile ✨

1. Tell us about your relationship to The X-Files. This could be about how you got into the show in the first place, what it means to you, or anything else you’d like to share.

i actually started txf almost 8 years ago during my early uni days (even back then it had been on my to watch list for a hot min), but i was streaming it through not very viable channels (coughcough) so by the end of season 1 i was a bit over struggling to stream it (i do remember being hooked by the time i got to jersey devil!!) — anyway at that point i was like yknow what this show will find me again when i need it the most (which is usually how i approach my media consumption). fast forward to jan 2024, i need a new show to hyperfixate on, txf is on a streaming platform that i am subscribed to, got back into s2 and mulder/scully have not left my thoughts since. 2024 was also one of the absolute worst years of my life and txf, particularly s6/s7, was such a clutch when i was trying to navigate loss and grief, so i am quite attached to that season. But i stopped at s7 in 2024 bc the grief of s8 was a bit too much for something so fresh to me and spent the rest of the year heavily indulging in the amazing fanfic out there!!! 2025 i was like right, time to get back to this, so i have just finished s8 and am currently making my way through s9. but i have zero self-restraint and have not saved myself from any spoilers lol, so def don't need to worry about making things spoiler free :)

2. Tell us about your favorite things! Favorite characters, ships, scenes, seasons, arcs, etc.

I think the thing that really drew me into msr was just how complementary they are of each other, especially intellectually. The way they are soooo curious about each other from the very start, them wanting to hear what the other has to say, wanting to know how the other is responding to the world is just so magnetic and heartwarming to watch/read about. Also the genuine care and respect they have for each other; their ability to go to hell and back for each other; and how their experiences tie them to the other in a way that really gives them this 'us against the world' dynamic.

I also loveeee AUs/canon divergence/case fics because I think those settings oftentimes really explore this dynamic as the thing that anchors the story to the x files/msr. Also love any kind of fix it/missing scene type fic because this show has a lot of reading between the lines, so i love to read someone else's take on what lies between those lines!!

3. Now what are your least favorite things?

unnecessary suffering due to poor writing/plot development (i.e. scully’s abduction/cancer arc is okay bc it’s mostly explained well and relatively explored appropriately in that you can understand character motivations/emotions; but mulder’s abduction/william is a bit ??? bc VERY under explored and it’s hard to make sense of why characters make the decisions they do …)

4. Tell us where you fall on the following scales:

SPICE SCALE - Salt only – no spice at all please! i.e., general audience rating. - Black pepper – a hint of spice. i.e., teen rating. - Chili pepper – there’s a bit of a kick! i.e., mature rating. - Habanero – definitely spicy, but most spice lovers can handle it. i.e., explicit rating. - Ghost pepper – only for the spiciest of spice lovers. i.e., VERY explicit/kink rating. Habanero mostly, but also if the plot is compelling/spice is up my alley then more than okay with ghost pepper

ANGST SCALE - Pale blue sky – no angst, all fluff! - Aquamarine – a little bit of angst, maybe some yearning, nothing too heartbreaking. e.g., the various scenes in Mulder’s hallway. - Cascade ocean wave – a moderate amount of angst, e.g. Pusher or Wetwired. Happy ending included. - Sapphire tears – pain slut. Angst with a happy or bittersweet ending. e.g. abduction arcs, cancer arc. - Catastrophic blues – literally why. Lots of angst with some devastation for dessert, e.g. cancer arc but Scully dies at the end, season 8 and Mulder dies. Usually in the aquamarine and cascade ocean wave side of things. I don't mind a bit of sapphire tears but need to be in the mood for it esp if the ending is bittersweet.

5. What’s on your X-Files playlist? e.g. a character playlist, MSR playlist, etc.

work song by hozier is my top tier msr song, esp after watching s8! some other songs i associate with them: cosmic love - florence + the machine, helpless when she smiles - backstreet boys, like real people do - hozier, bad religion - frank ocean, francis forever - mitski

6. What are some of your favorite quotes and/or lyrics that you associate with TXF?

i can't think of any specific quotes at the moment! but usually anything that talks about cosmic connections i usually immediately think of msr

7. What are some of your favorite tropes? Are there any you avoid?

fake marriage/pretend rship (esp if undercover), slow burn, rivalry to romance, the lead up to the italicised 'oh' when someone realises how in love they are, perceived unrequited love, monologue confessions (like in ftf) ; can't think of any that i absolutely avoid

8. What is your favorite color or color scheme? These can be specific colors or general categories, e.g. jewel tones, cool colors.

Warm tones are my favourite!! but also loveee the moody, dark colouring of the early xf seasons, especially darkness with clever light play (idk if i'm saying this correctly/explaining this well)

9. Share the links to some gifsets/edits that you love and tell your secret admirer why (e.g. do you like the layout? The coloring? The quote that they used? Typography? Simplicity? Parallels?). These can be X-Files/MSR or other fandoms.

@ katebeckets how to say i love you in the x files is my all time favourite gif set collection of all fandoms i've been in!! mostly bc it's such a lovely way to remember all the little moments in the show that say so much when you focus on them, also the colouring is always so pretty!
