What is the point of an engagement ring?
Before we delve into Talking why engagement rings are so important, let's start out Having a fun exercise to get you to the zone:
Try to think of every film or TV show proposal you have ever seen -- chances are you will come up with at least twenty in under five minutes! As you sort through your all-time-favourite proposals on shows like Friends or films like Gone with the Wind, you'll quickly come to realize that the majority of the tricks involved a carefully chosen engagement ring.
So, why is it that even the Chandler Bings of the world place so much significance in obtaining the perfect ring to their significant others?
The tradition of proposing marriage with an engagement ring dates back to early Egyptian times but was not widely popularized until the custom attained ancient Rome. Back in the olden times, the ring not only symbolized a spouse's commitment to the eternity of the relationship, it also served as a statement to enchanting bachelors looking to whisk soon-to-be-wives away for a frolic in the hay: any woman with a ring on the ring-finger of her left hand is no longer accessible to be courted.
Some people feel that an engagement ring should signify a woman's worth, with a few schools of thought even going as far as to suggest that the price of a ring should amount to of the soon-to-be-husband's wages.
While the latter may not always match with our contemporary story, there's definitely a fact to spouses needing something unique to slip onto their loved ones' finger -- yes, even when they start their research and the ring buying extravaganza, their final purpose is to discover a ring they feel is as amazing as the man who will be treasuring it for the remainder of their life. Now, if that is not romantic?!
In contemporary terms, you can think of an engagement ringĀ as a tool as powerful as the Dating Status on Facebook: after it's on your finger, the whole world -- ok, at least your loved ones and immediate circle of friends -- will probably understand you are headed down the aisle. It's amazing how one, tiny, circular thing can speak a thousand words but that's exactly what the engagement ring does. Every time you look down onto it you'll probably be reminded of all the reasons you fell in love with your significant other, why you have committed to spending the remainder of your lives together, and all the things you have to appear forward to later on. It's a silent but eternal proposal resting on your ring-finger, your vows to one another solidified and always current as a reminder when you're tough. An engagement ring is a source of pride and also a loud and clear message to the world: I love -- and will continue to love -- this person for as long as I shall live, and I need everyone to know it!
An engagement ring represents your commitment to one another and forms part of ancient traditions, but it doesn't mean that taking this step on your relationship with no ring will maintain any less significance. Yes, it happens on TV! Spontaneous proposals are only as romantic as well as any other suggestion. Should you have any doubts, just ask Cece and Schmidt out of New Girl -- Schmidt's proposal involved a dollar bill rather than a ring yet they've been happily married for an entire season!
