My photo essay is about feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness. I chose to photograph very busy or very bare locations because loneliness can be frustrating or anxiety inducing, but it can also feel like an everlasting void or impossible to escape. I also wanted to capture ideas of loneliness being your biggest enemy yet feeling like your most defining trait, and the want for change but being unable to commit to it.

I was influenced by William Eggleston for my photo essay. I noticed a lot of his photos limit the amount of information given to viewers. This makes them interesting as viewers rely on their imagination to fill in the gaps. I attempted to do the same, eliminating a lot of my subjects' environments and developing a theme of restricted view.

Light & Shadow Proposal
To Deluge
For our Light and Shadow project, I am choosing to make another thematic essay. The theme of my essay will be the idea of emotional consumption. I want to capture the feeling of being overwhelmed by an emotion. I’m still unsure if I want to capture a specific emotion or multiple emotions such as stress, relief, joy, and sadness.
My goal is to work with a lot of contrast and increase the variety in my photo essay. While shooting my midterm project, I found myself very intrigued by the idea of taking a photo inside a dark room but trying to capture the orange sunlight that livened everything outdoors. For the final, I want to continue tampering with placing my camera in the dark but shooting a well lit subject and vice versa. I also want to take photos that are in complete shade or darkness versus ones that are very bright and lacking shadows. A third way I could develop contrast is through lighting techniques such as Rembrandt or split lighting.
I also want to challenge myself to work outside of my comfort zone for this project. I prefer to take pictures that are very natural and spontaneous rather than posed. I will continue to do this for the final, but I want to work with a model and props to improve my directing skills as well. On top of that, I can make interesting shadows with props like flowers, something with a lot of small holes, or fun lights.
>6-8 photos
>Half outdoors, half indoors
>3-4 using a model
>1 of each lighting technique listed (all dark, all light, in dark capturing light, in light capturing dark)
>Use of at least one prop
>Small rectangular prints displayed together (5 x 7in or 5 x 6in)
>Aiming for most photos to be shot horizontally
>A model (myself or my roommates)
>Burlap or my laundry bag
>Fairy lights
>Tripod
>Shoot natural subject matter first (plant life), then shoot models to match the first set of photos. Then shoot more of what I feel is needed
>Going to carry around my camera so I can shoot whenever, wherever
>Shoot from inside my dorm and scout interesting spots around campus like the engineering quad or Kelly and Tabler living communities

Monique Yvonne Jones was the first photographer to come to mind when I read this assignment. I encountered her work on Instagram where every piece posted is entirely self-made. My favorite thing about her artwork is how emotionally charged it is.
