I literally cannot overstate how important creative hobbies are when dealing with mental illness. If you can’t draw, there are coloring books. If you can’t write a novel, you can write in short journaling bursts. If you can’t sing in the shower, you can listen to music. Sometimes with mental illness it feels like we have this dark presence inside of us that is bumping around in our brain and organs, causing problems. It helps immensely to let it out.

Kyle Thompson - Graveyard Girls (2013) I’ve been in Tennessee with my friend Marissa Bolen.  Yesterday we planned a huge shoot which involved building a dam, and covering models with flour and milky water.  It was a group effort.  You can see her shots here, you should follow her!

Having no sources of intimacy in your daily life and therefore resorting to learning as much as you can as a way to pass the time is such a sad cycle, every single day its like what can I become obsessively interested in this time to vaguely simulate companionship and a temporary sense of purpose that I know will eventually make me feel even more alone because even if I find meaning and enjoyment it is completely irrelevant to and isolated from everyone and everything else

“I was never really insane, except upon occasions when my heart was touched.”
Latin: fui numquam vero insanus, extra ex occasionibus quando meum cor tangeret.
Greek: ἐγενόμην οὔποτε ἀληθῶς μανιώδης, πλήν ἐπὶ καιρῶν ὁπότε ἡ ἐμῆς καρδία ἅψαι.
— Edgar Allan Poe to Mrs. Maria Clemm— July 7, 1849

aaaahh mim how do you arrange these quotes!!! I am reading so much and I remember certain things but I forget so easily! I would love to hear from you! please send help
i just write them down bb (more on it here and here)
like…i do forget a lot and often i will remember the vaguest fragment of something but forget entirely where it came from and then that will drive me mad for weeks and weeks, but otherwise i always scribble down the quotes i love best or engage with them as actively as i can and that helps root them down in the brain much better.
i used to read a lot more too but i try not to devour books in quick succession anymore because it doesn’t leave any room for the words to breathe in my mind. something might stick out very vividly for a moment but then eventually it all bleeds together or evaporates. so the active part is key!  so i keep notebooks and write mini essays and read over them if i want a refresher. or i keep folders on my computer or memorise or tape up my favourite poems on my wall or mirror. i’ve been doing it for a while now though so my brain is already kind of in that ‘mode’ when i read if that makes sense. it sort of automatically latches onto things it knows i’ve visited or focused on before and that makes it easier to remember and seek out parallels. i hope this helps!
