Capital Alchemists are regarded as some of the foremost scholars on magic and science. They are the opposite side of the Empire's military coin, serving as the body that checks & balances all magic wielded by Knights. No Alchemist can cast magic on their own, and no Knight can cast magic without an Alchemist. Şahi al-Warraq is a bold, irreverent, but undeniably brilliant Alchemist. With several spells attributed to her name, she holds the distinction of writing for many prominent officers - including Captain Castillejo - and even members of the royal family. Power of the magnitude Şahi offers, however, comes at a price. Her spells are known to be mentally & physically demanding in the extreme, and damaging if used in excess. The Alchemists are an old order with secrets of their own. This secrecy has led to all sorts of suspicions and theories, including the ridiculous belief that all Alchemists sign a pact of silence that physically prevents them from speaking ill of the Empire. (Something Şahi firmly denies & will happily blabber about after a few too many glasses of wine.)
