If he survives, expect the number to jump right up to 10. )

Paranormal Investigation AU

Shu is a dollmaker/puppeteer, able to create artificial, but highly detailed and life-like limbs that are fully functioning. His ultimate goal is to create the ‘perfect’ doll, but given his extremely high standards of perfection, he has yet to attain this goal and likely never will.

He runs a workshop where he makes and sells custom-made dolls and clothing, but this serves as a front for his secret occupation as a paranormal investigator, running a hidden detective agency (formed with the other Oddballs, depending on the verse.)

The detective agency takes on various cases pertaining to the supernatural, but Shu typically takes on work that involves puppet-making and sends his assistant, Mika, out on the field to investigate instead. He has plays an administrative role in the agency, and also serves as an intelligence analyst of sorts, having implemented various means of information-gathering and surveillance through his dolls.

He is lacking in combat capabilities and physical endurance, hence why he avoids direct confrontation and uses alternative tactics to retreat from or neutralize a threat. Furthermore, he dislikes using dolls for the purpose of combat, but will use them as a diversion when needed.

At most, he can manifest magical golden threads that can be used to restrain or manipulate objects, but due to it being an extension of his own soul, it poses as great of a risk if anything were to interfere in his casting.

Mika is Shu’s assistant that he brought into the agency after his abilities caught his attention, as both a shadow mage and the owner of a magical eye (the yellow one) that can perceive extrasensory phenomenon when its ability is activated. He can sense the aura of those around him and detect the presence of spirits, but it requires an established line of sight and will put a strain on him if activated for too long.

His origins are a mystery since he grew up in an orphanage, but he’s incredibly devoted to Shu and his work, both as a dollmaker and paranormal investigator. He’s drawn to the supernatural out of a personal interest in it, but he’s come to realize that the supernatural is also drawn to him, for reasons he still doesn’t quite understand. Unfortunately, he sees himself as a harbinger of bad luck because of this.

He can manipulate shadows, manifesting his own as a tangible mass that can take whatever form he desires, tendrils, spikes and wings being the most common. He’s also capable of traversing between shadows in a manner akin to teleportation, but this requires a point of contact in order to work. Furthermore, due to the nature of shadows, it creates weaknesses that can be exploited.

Kuro is onikind, humans who are descended from oni and possess mixed blood, granting them superhuman strength, stamina and endurance, but also a natural inclination towards their oni instincts, which puts them in danger of having their demonic blood take over their mind and becoming mindless beasts hellbent on slaughter.

Onikind vary between those who control their instincts and attempt to live as ordinary humans (Kuro falls under this category), and those who embrace their lineage and actively cultivate their blood by partaking in acts of violence (potential NPC antagonists).

( I want to talk about Danganronpa, but specifically Tetora’s arc because he’s somehow become my most prominent muse in that AU. )

( I still consider him a ‘secondary’ muse, but his characterization in Danganronpa turned out interesting? He’s pretty 'OOC’ all things considered, but only because the Danganronpa universe is so messed up, and after everything he’s been subjected to, there’s no way he would've been able to maintain that usual personality of his, so my intention is to explore an ‘extreme’ side of him. )

( Thanks to Tori’s machinations, he’s led to believe he has nothing left after he’s been abandoned by the people he looked up to, but is also made to believe he is nothing because he never amounted to anything and is nowhere near his desired self-image as a ‘man among men.’ He doesn’t even know what that means anymore, after he’s been thoroughly brainwashed and tortured into submission. He thought it meant staying strong when everything’s falling apart around him and he tried - he resisted Tori with all his might, but he’s been rendered completely powerless, with Tori’s authority over him rubbing salt in the wound. )

( He doesn’t trust Tori at all, but half-heartedly goes along with his plans as a way to vent his frustrations, choosing violence as an outlet and taking it out on everything around him. To him, “might makes right” and he takes extreme measures to cope with his feelings of helplessness. It’s not uncommon to see Tetora prowling the streets like a delinquent, wielding a nail-bat to attack people and vandalize property, in stark contrast to his former ideal of practicing bare-handed karate for the sake of self-defense and discipline. He even went out of his way to find Yumenosaki’s dojo and absolutely trashed it out of spite - might be the subject of a future drabble, stay tuned. )

( But after a few run-ins with the sisters fighting through the city, he’ll start to self-reflect, realizing that most of his anger and hatred is actually directed at himself. When he finally learns the truth, he knows full well that he can’t be redeemed for everything he’s done, but he believes that there’s still something he can do to try and set things right, and it’ll eventually drive him to turn against Tori one last time, even if it costs him his life. He’s prepared to die and resigns himself to his fate when he’s trapped in a collapsing building to buy the sisters time to escape, but spoiler alert, he’s rescued by Kanata, Shinobu and Midori, who are actually alive, yay~ )

( Then everything comes full circle when he starts helping Chiaki and the other survivors behind the scenes, since he can’t show his face as a public enemy. He has no intention of redeeming himself in the eyes of the public and accepts himself as a villain, but as long as he can still support the people he loves, that’s all that matters to him. Chiaki and Kuro can praise him for being a ‘true man’ for what he’s doing, but he denies it, instead swearing that he’ll keep working hard for the rest of his life to see that the future remains bright for the rest of humanity. In the meantime, he’ll live out the rest of his days with the rehabilitated Despair children, so they can find their own hope. )
