Fantastic Glitches and Were to Find Them
After conducting a preliminary analysis of various image and video formats, I became intrigued by the .mp4 format and its h.264 codec. To gain a deeper understanding, I researched some theoretical aspects of the format and video encoding/decoding in general. This exploration proved essential in uncovering fascinating techniques for manipulating the format, enabling me to achieve more precise and targeted outcomes. A significant information that I learned was the existence of distinct frame types, each possessing different characteristics. By exploiting the differences between these frames types, I stumbled upon a technique known as "Datamoshing." This process involves intentionally breaking the expected flow of data, resulting in intriguing visual effects. Trying to achieve greater control over the artefacts, I started custom videos that allowed me to regulate and manipulate the artifacts produced during the process. Through experimentation and refinement, I eventually established a well-defined workflow that consistently produces (more or less) expected results. However, I am aware that there is still much left to try and discover.

I am exploring the data moshing technique in MP4 files. Right now I am trying to edit specific areas of the file in order to apply the effect to the scene transitions. These are some of the results.
