Technological Experimentation & Learning 15 [Podcasts]
In this technological experimentation I made a whole bunch of podcasts. Doesn’t seem like much of an experimentation in regards to technology but I did learn a few things. First, the knowledge that I gained earlier in regards to how to use a compressor came in handy. Running a compressor on my recorded audio certainly helped make things clearer. Secondly, just for the sake of experimentation, I modified my voice. I used reverb, the compressor, a pitch shift, equalization, and the warp function in the Ableton sampler (in order to keep the audio the same length when I pitched my voice up). Overall, I am not sure that this adds to the production value for the listener. However, it did help me listen to them. Further, I did learn even more about these tools in the process.

Technological Experimentation & Learning 14 [Reverb]
Reverb is everywhere. I also think it is often done poorly and to much too high a degree. For this TELP I will be consulting Youtube on the topic and then I will be trying it out for myself. The first video I watched was called Mastering & Reverb Tutorial | Laidback Luke VLOG #023. In this video the author uses Ableton stock reverb which is interesting. As he is an EDM artist I am not sure this advice should be applied to instrument mixing for different genres. But for now let’s learn what he has to teach. The best advice I got from this video was “twist the knobs until you hear something that is good.” The more I get into mastering the more I realize how similar it is to playing an instrument. After all of the technical information and techniques are learned, listening to the sounds is still the most important factor. I messed around with the stock reverb that comes with Ableton and “twisted the knobs until I heard something that was good” and have to say that I am somewhat satisfied with what the stock reverb engine can do.

Technological Experimentation & Learning 13 [Compressors Utilization]
In this experimentation I will be attempting to utilize the information that I learned in TELP 12. I loaded an acapella sample of Suicidal Thoughts by Biggie Smalls into the Ableton Sampler and tried using a compressor side-chained to a kick drum in order to see what happens. Due to the already staccato delivery of this vocals the result was interesting but not really... good. So I tried it again with an acapella version of On and On by Erykah Badu. This had a much better result and this is certainly something that I will use while doing mastering in the future.
