DSDN172 - Project 2 - Ethical Compass Reflection
Ethical Compass
My ethical compass focuses on the journey one goes through while dealing with a personal problem or issue, While also focusing on the major topic of Climate change.
The overall message that I am trying to portray is the idea that throughout my life I have had many problems and that there is a process of overcoming those problems.
Journey through a personal problem or issue.
The story of my ethic compass starts at the bottom of the stamp. The fire and rocks represent the peak of the personal problem. The fire then transitions into a ‘barren land’, which reflects the emptiness one goes through during the whole dilemma. It then transitions into a large mountain which portrays the long upside battle/struggle you have to endure to push through the problem. We then see a large bird emerge from the mountain. This resembles a sign of hope.
The bird is then seen flying into the ‘light’ showing that once you have gone through the problem the exit on the other side is grandious, enlightening and positive to your well being. Showing that in the end, everything is fine.
Climate change and effect on the environment.
The fire and rocks represent plastic pollution and the burning of fossil fuels. The fire then transitions into a ‘barren land’ which in this case represents what the world could look like in the future... A wasteland. It then transitions into the mountainscape is also resembles the uphill battle we have with climate change and trying to resolve it. Then, in this case, the bird as used as a sign of hope that there is a possibility of the world surviving and that we can find a solution. The light at the top is used to portray that if we do find that solution the world will be bought into the light again.
The effect on the environment is heavily portrayed within my stamp handle. The colors of black and brown are used on the earth to represent the harsh reality of what the world is starting to look like. The words STOP are used to show that we need to stop killing the planet and find a solution to climate change. The worlds are positioned behind the earth to represent the fact that people seem to be ignoring climate change and between to put it leave it behind. The white background is used again as a sign of hope.

DSDN172 - Project 3 - Development and Process
Concepts
Tumblr media
Concept 1 - resembles the fact that you will create or do something in life, but people will always be watching over you and judging.
Concept 2 - ‘out of nothing comes something’ this shows that in life, out of nowhere something will happen to you, whether it be good or bad. In this case, the bird represents something good happening.
Concept 3 - Stages of drumsticks represent different emotions that one goes through in life.  The first being a new drumstick - happy and joyful. The second being a broken drumstick - broken and sad. third being chipped - upset and down.
Development
Tumblr media
I choose Concept 2 to further develop as I thought it portrayed the best theme and encapsulated my ethical compass the best. I decided to make the bird smaller and add extra elements to the design. starting off with lines then adding a mountainscape.
Refinement
Tumblr media
I then took the drawing into Illustrator and began tracing the design. I slowly started adding aspects to the design that I thought added to my ethical compass. Adding things like mountains, two additional birds, a barren land, fire, and rocks.
Final Design
Tumblr media
Final Stamp
Tumblr media
Stamp Holder Development
Tumblr media
The stamp design incorporates the environmental aspect of my moral compass. Adding things like the earth on fire to the word ‘STOP’ behind the earth.
Making of the stamp
Tumblr media
First drew the earth and fire aspects of the design and cut them out. From there I stuck them onto a wooden backing. The wooden backing is elevated to act as the stamp handle. I then cut out the words stop and applied them behind the earth.

DSDN172 - Project 2 - Reflection
Personal Reflection
Overall, I enjoyed the making of the film and am happy with the final outcome. Through the use of dialogue, themes, and ideas, we managed to portray the story well in the small time frame we had. All the parts, from the filming, audio, costume, and editing all came seamlessly into one to form the overall product, and I think every single aspect of the filming making was important and without it, the final outcome would have been vastly different. I also enjoyed the collaborative aspect of the project. I enjoyed the process of talking back and forth and developing ideas when filming. As a whole, we all worked together quite well and were organized in the process.
Design Intent
The project also helped with my overall idea of film making and storytelling. It allowed us to adopt an alternative story into a scene play, something I had never done before. As a result, during the process, I learned a lot about storytelling, filming, acting, and editing. All useful things that i can carry into future projects with.
The film tells the story of the Maori creation myth which had been adapted into an office style interview. Although the film is quite short and uses an interview-style filming technique, there are many themes and ideas portrayed in its 2-minute time frame.
Lighting
The film is based in two locations. The interview room and the darkroom. The interview has bright lighting which represents the new world that has been created, while the darkroom has dark and minimal lighting. We did this as it reflected what the world was like before the creation, and also shows what the embrace was like between Rangi and Papa. Near the end of the film, we see Tane pushing the parents apart. During these shots, the lighting gradually gets brighter, which resembles the creation of the new world and the light that is flowing into it.
Costume
We see that in the conversation scenes Eli is wearing a white hoodie while Michael and I are wearing black hoodies, This represents the two sides of the argument people are on, and shows that everyone seems to disagree with Tawhirimatea.
Camera
We use a wide variety of camera shots and angles to not only help support these themes and also to help portray ‘the office’ style of filming. A ‘shakey’ camera is used in the conversation scenes to help add to the conflict in hand. Dramatic zoom-ins are also used to help with this idea.

DSDN172 - Project 2 - Contributions
Tumblr media
AUDIO
All the audio in the film is recorded through audacity and edited in premiere pro, using an Audio Technica microphone. The images above show me testing the levels, the position of the mic and changing settings. The final outcome was a result of numerous tests and takes to get the correct final audio that was crisp and clean. After recording the audio I named all the clips and labeled them on a script. This indicated which clip to put where and helped with the editing process.
In addition to recording all the film's voice audio, I helped with the sound effects and background noise within the editing process. I helped with the EQ of the office background noise and getting the right levels for certain audio tracks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ACTING
I was one of the 3 main actors in the film. The images above show the acting process and how it developed. We played the audio that was recorded in the interview scene and lip-synced the lines while acting. This task proved more difficult than we thought and took multiple takes to get it right. In addition to acting, while filming scenes we found that a lot more discussion was needed on how we were going to film parts. The images above show everyone in the group discussing and developing ideas on how to go about things. Doing this when we were filming allowed us to better develop the film and the overall story we were trying to express.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ORGANISING FILES FOR EDITING
After filming and recording audio we all sat down and looked over the clips. We looked through all the clips and picked the ones that were the best, I then labeled and renamed the files and wrote the file name next to the script. This allowed Nickol to see which clips went where and allowed him to put the clip where we intended it to go, all helping with the editing process.

Project 1b - Reflection
My adornment represents the story of creation. I Choose to create a pendant as I believe being able to wear an adornment holds more significance than if it were to be just an object
I choose to construct the pendant out of wood, paper, and card. Instead of 3D printing or laser cutting. I choose this method as it felt I could achieve the right aesthetic more accurately with hand craftsmanship. In addition, when handcrafting, a ‘raw’ quality is shown. As the story is raw, unfiltered and unrefined, I felt that handcrafting would encapture that aesthetic more accurately than 3D printing or lazer cutting.
I wanted my adornment to represent not only the story of creation but also to represent my interpretation, so I incorporated both stories into my pendant. The pedant starts off with a dark circular background, this represents the ‘darkness’ within my narrative. Through the narrative, the darkness slow fades away and dies. The pendant places the black background at the back to reflect this notion.
After the background, I have brown curved shapes. These shapes are topography and are meant to represent the shapes of mountains, which overall represent the earth that is being created in front of the ‘darknesses’ eyes.
The geometric shapes that make up the center circle are representative of Ranginui and Papatūānukus struggle. The black and white shapes show the tearing apart of their relationship. The scattered nature of the shapes represents the moment the world was created and mimics how they felt during the creation.
Lastly, the yellow lines on top of the adornment represent strays of light that are entering the space at the very second the world is created.
Colour
Topography - I choose the brown earth tone for the topography as I felt it better suited the nature of how the land is seen and perceived as. In addition, I wanted a color that contrasted well with the black and white circle that is on top of the topography. The brown achieves this well and it accentuates the color and form of the circle well.
Strays of light - I choose the colour yellow as its the colour most associated with light. It also contrasts nicely with the circle and topography. It also is a prominent colour, making it stand out above the rest.

Traditionally in Māori culture, there are several things that adorn the head. A major one being feathers and flowers. Typically worn by men, the feathers symbolize a man high status. The more beautiful/rare the feathers you wore, the higher the rank you were. Feathers such as the long tail feathers of amokura bird were used as apart of the adornment. Heru was also worn. A long one piece whalebone titireia, normally worn by chiefs.

DSDN172 - Project 1b - Narrative
There was nothing around me. No sun to set, no lands to fill, no sky to glaze upon. Only the darkness. As far as the eye could see, emptiness consumed the open space… It felt like home. I loved it. the isolation, the peacefulness… I couldn’t imagine a better place to live in.
However, there was one thing that bothered me.
Amongst the empty space laid, Papatuanuku, The Earth Mother, and Ranginui, The Sky Father. They were in love. Locked in an everlasting warm embrace, never wanting to let go and let their love spoil.
What bothered me was what they held between them. Between the mother and fathers warm embrace were their 70 children. Trapped. Unable to move. Suck in the darkness. I wondered if the children knew, what it was like outside of their parents embrace, what it was like to live in a space like mine.
I couldn’t help but feel bad for the children. I didn’t know what to do. Set the children free? Or break the warm embrace between two loving people. The internal conflict burned inside of me.
Finally, I decided what I should do.
I went over to the parents and managed to slip through their embrace and found a child. The child lay on the ground looking up at what was the barren land of his parent's embrace.
Although nothingness existed in my world, this space felt worse, it felt cold.
I went up to the boy and asked, “Has it always been like this?”
“What? This miserable space? Yeah it has”  he replied
“Have you ever tried to escape? to see what was outside?” I asked
“What you do you mean... isn’t this all there is?”
“No, of course not! there’s a whole world out there to explore. You could be free!” I replied
“Really?”
 “Yeah. Look, I’ll show you”
I tapped into the boy's mind and showed him my home. He was amazed, he wanted to be where I was, he wanted to see the ‘light’.
“How do I escape,” he asked
“Well, you’ll have to figure that out” I replied. And with that swift reply, I left, hoping my words had resonated with the young boy.
Now it was time to wait.
I was conflicted by my actions. I wasn’t sure if I had made the right decision. I thought to myself that it would be nice to have some company, some people to enjoy the space in the same way I do. However, I didn’t know what would actually happen if the children were to escape, for all things I know, everything could fall apart.
As the days past, I rested and contemplated on my thoughts, waiting for something to happen. Waiting for the child to tell his other siblings about what life could be like. I sat there thinking to myself, are the children doing anything? are they devising a plan? are they fighting for the light? or has all my effort gone to waste?
Suddenly, I heard a noise… BANG!
I look over at the mother and father.
The children had done it, they had started to escape, they now saw the ‘light’. I had convinced the young boy to escape and join my world.
As the children pushed their parents apart I was shocked at what I saw. Light appeared through the embrace, it came pouring out and started to fill the emptiness with all life.
Land was formed, and with land bought mountains, and with mountains bought water and with water bought trees and plants and flowers. Animals frolicked in the land, birds soared in the sky, fish swam in the sea. All life spread into the emptiness, filling it with beauty, joy, and wonder. The children were free and a world never thought before, was created. However, with all this joy and wonder, I came to a realisation.
I was dead.
Dark and light couldn’t exist as one. As the lightness came into existence, the darkness slowly faded away. I was apart of that darkness.
The whole time I was helping others, wanting to bring them to my world,  I was slowly killing myself and my world as I knew it.
I had made the ultimate sacrifice, I had sacrificed my life, my home and my world for the creation of a new one. A new world that was filled with the children, who now ran free, animals who lived happily, and a world... with light.
During the night and gloomy days on earth, the spirit of the darkness comes out in the form of shadows to represent the ultimate sacrifice he made for the creation of the life.
(Written from the perspective of the darkness as if it were a life form/being.)

PBA 2 - Cultural Appropriation
Tumblr media
BP New Zealand has used the Māori signs in their advertising for fair trade coffee.
An issue arises in the meaning behind the Tiki.  The Tiki is a sign of fertility. Images and carvings of Tiki are placed around the neck of couples who are trying to conceive a baby. The advertisement from BP places the deity of fertility in the bottom left corner, and although not directly stated, It is assumed that by placing the Tiki on the poster, it is meant to assist with fertility.
Although some would argue that the Tiki is a somewhat archaic symbol in the Māori language and that in modern times the meaning has altered, the fertility meaning is still relevant.
I think that the association with the coffee is not a respectful use of the symbol and contributes to the cultural appropriation of the advertisement. If BP were trying to be more culturally diverse in this advertisement and incorporate māori culture, I think there are better ways to approach this.
In order to make the poster more appreciative towards the culture, the advertisement team could find a Māori symbol that, for lack of a better word, better suited what they were trying to advertise. A symbol that would somehow directly relate to coffee and not a symbol that could be mistaken for something offensive or give off the wrong meaning.
Tumblr media
Fonterra has been accused of appropriating Māori cultural by naming a cheese after a Kāoti chief.
Fonterra has named one of its Cheese products ‘Tuteremoana cheddar’, after the landmark, the highest peak on Kāpti island. Although some might consider this name choice completely fine, others disagree as the name ‘Tuteremoana’ is also the name of a Māori chief. Taiuru says “From a customer point of view it shows that you are going to eat that person”. Due to the fact that people consider it to be offensive, it can be considered cultural appropriation.
In the future, Fonterra should improve its procedures by consulting Māori on the use of Māori culture, in order to become culturally appreciative. If they want to include Māori culture in their branding they need to research and find a symbol or name that better suits the product they are selling.

DSDN172 Summary
AIM
The aim of this mood board was to capture the creative side of me and the journey I have undertaken, it shows my creative development throughout my lifetime. This mood board captures all the creative things I enjoy doing. Music, playing instruments, architecture, drawing, origami, and digital design are all shown in the piece. All things that give my life meaning, things that inspire me to go and create something.
Upon viewing the mood, I wanted people to be inspired by what they saw. After seeing all the drawing, design and music, to be inspired and create something of their own.
The mood board is all done by hand, meaning all photos, drawings, and other aspects are all printed out and arranged in person. I choose this as I wanted to achieve a realistic and almost ‘messy’ aesthetic, something I thought wouldn’t be executed as accurately if were done digitally.
 JOURNEY
The journey of my creative experience starts at the bottom with pictures of my first drum kit, people that inspired me at a young age, origami and love for design. As we travel upward on the mood board, we are introduced to new aspects of creativity that gradually entered my life, such as introduction to new instruments, music production, and new people that inspire me. Near the top of the mood board, we see the current things that I am passionate about. Drums, architecture, drawing and music production.
COMPOSITION
At the center of the piece, there is a photograph of me. The image is in black and white and has fractured elements of my face that are blended together. The goal of this was to express the different sides of my creative personality and to show how varied they are. To direct people viewing the work, there is a photograph of my guitar that acts as a leading line to the centerpiece. In addition, the array of pencils, markers, fine lines, and guitar leads also guide the viewer.
The color scheme to this mood board is quite dark. The use of greys and blacks and textured backgrounds evoke a sense of rawness and makes the viewer almost pay more attention to the work. The colors of individual pictures themselves are all different, this is intentional as I wanted every single image and photograph to stand out and they were all equally as important.
The background is overlapped and cluttered to represent the wide variety of creative things I have done in my life. The mood board is covered in objects such as guitar picks, pencils, and guitar leads. They add more dimension to the mood board and add to its realism. In addition, lyrics to songs that I admire as scattered over the mood board to give inspiration.
