Top of the KOKO head trail- I spent a total of 10 days in Hawaii and I lovvvveddddd it! There was so much to explore, the beaches were incredible and the general vibe was just unreal. The North Shore, known for one of the world’s most famous breaks Pipeline was unreal- I could watch surfers for hours and hours on end tackle that break. The guts, the adrenaline….

STATE CUP- Every year this touch football competition is held in Port Macquarie, NSW. This year I was asked to play for a Newcastle Team, The Wallsend Wolves. It was an exhausting weekend full of high quality touch football, and unfortunately we lost in the grand final. Nonetheless, it was an incredible weekend!

JOHN FLYNN PLACEMENT PROGRAM. The JFPP is a medical scholarship which encourages students to practice Medicine in Rural and Remote Parts of Australia. Through the program, they hope to illustrate the more positive aspects of rural and remote medicine. I applied in my first year of medicine and was lucky enough to be a recipient. Each recipient is allocated a rural town somewhere in Australia. "Wangaratta" (VIC) was my assigned town and Dr. Ian Wilson was my assigned mentor. I've been travelling to Wangaratta for 4 years now, each time spending a total of two weeks in the Emergency Department at Wangaratta Hospital. Over the four years, i've grown to love Wangaratta and i highly suggest people visit this town when the opportunity arises (perhaps on a road trip to Melbourne). You're able to go for a swim in the Oven river, visit one of the countless Vinyards for some tastings and lunch, try some cheese from Miliwa, head to the pub for killer meal and experience the AFL atmosphere.
I've always been a bit of a country girl, I've spent a majority of my life in the country. I love the smell of fresh air, the ease of travel, and the small town atmosphere. When I lived in Bermagui, the whole town was my family- everyone looked out for each other and you were never alone. I had the best childhood, and wouldn't choose any other bringing for my children. I remember walking to school, playing sport almost every afternoon, fishing, prawning, crabbing, going to the beach, and playing with the other children of the town whose parents were also working (my parents owned the local Asian restaurant "Sampan Restaurant"). I loved every minute and wouldn't trade my country upbringing for a city upbringing ever.

AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES! This year, AUG was held on the Gold Coast. This was not my first Uni Games; I attended AUG in Adelaide last year, representing the University of New England in Women's Football. As I had attended the previous AUG, i was fairly familiar with the proceedings for the week- I was one very excited girl. Approaching the games, I had the difficult choice of deciding whether I was to represent The Newcastle of University or The University of New England (I'm a Joint Medical Program student, thus have the privilege of being associated with both universities). I chose to represent Newcastle, mainly for the reason of making more friends in Newcastle, my new home. Looking back, I can safely say that I made the correct decision. The girls I met were all incredible, beautiful, intelligent, fun and I could not have asked for a better bunch of people to have spent the week with. We stayed at the Hilton on Surfers Paradise and attended clubs such as Melbas, Vanity, Paris, Club Liv and even making a sneaky visit to Player's strip club. Although we didn't perform on the field as well as we would have liked to, we improved game by game and came away with a couple of wins in the end. Overall, the week was filled with laughter, great food was consumed, and good memories were created. A question we jokingly talked about on the road trip home was: did we lose calories from all the games of football played? or did we gain calories from all the alcohol and junk food consumed?haha. Friendship was the winner of the week!

I recently took mum to Thailand. We went quad biking through some villages, rice paddocks and mountains just outside of Chiang Mai. We saw some of Thailand's most scenic views. Trip of a life time! Love her to bits. xxxx

AMSA convention. This yearly event is located at a different location around Australia- this year, the host city was the Gold Coast. Some say, it’s more difficult to get a ticket to the annual AMSA convention than it is to actually gain entry into Medical school. Debatable. Basically this event consists of 1000+ medical students congregating in the one city for a period of week, where every night of the week they have a themed party. This year, the themes were intergalactic, dark and twisted fantasy, rewind, americano, kaPow and snowball. For me, it is honestly just one big party; I enjoy partying very much and I have no plans anytime soon to slow down. This has been my fourth convention. Each day, your body is taking a battering with no sleep, large consumptions of alcohol and by the end of the week there’s a strong possibility you will come down with a case of what’s called “conventionitis”. Overall, you meet many wonderful (and not so wonderful people) and have a lot of fun. The event is fairly pricey, costing approximately $1000 or so dollars, a fairly expensive week. However, in saying that, we are only ever able to attend this event during medical school, we will never get the opportunity to do this again. So really, in the scheme of things it’s a small price to pay for an incredible week of creating memories, friends, knowledge and opportunities.

Smiling. It’s one of the most incredible, infectious and best things in life. No matter where you are in the world; and irrespective of culture, race, or religion, this simple facial expression is a uniform sign for pleasure, happiness, satisfaction or amusement. How GOOD is that aching feeling you get in your cheeks when you’ve smiled too much- it’s the best ache in this world. Everyone should smile a little more. I once stepped out of a car in Brisbane with a smile on my face simply because I had reached my destination, a man approached me, smiled at me and said, “I can tell you smile a lot, you have a beautiful smile”, it made me smile more. Smiling is contagious! Perhaps there is a stranger somewhere out there who is having a terrible day and seeing you smile is all it takes for them to smile. At the end of the day, if I have made one person smile, then that’s all I need. Go out there and make someone smile. No matter who it is- a child, your mother, a puppy, a friend, or a stranger. Smiling is a beautiful thing. SMILE!
