  A Love Letter Addressed To Tea

To tea, or not to tea – that dear friends, is a laughable question. The answer is always yes, more tea please. Because what’s not to love about this beautiful brew?

For starters, have you noticed how everybody seems to get oolong better and better over steaming cups of fragrant tea?

Bonus: they play super nice when you are entertaining friends or family too. More the merrier they always say, making sure that everyone is always smiling at the end of a chai session.

And this is true of every single variant that you can think of – virgin white, long leaf green, Assam, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Rose Hip, Saffron Kahwa, Matcha, Chamomile, Jasmine, Peppermint… the list goes on an on, and they’re all delightful. To this writer, tea-time is me-time. A time to relax, unwind and just take the time out to smell the flowers. Besides the fragrant aromas swirling upwards from her steaming cuppa of course.

Which only means that while you can’t buy happiness, you can buy tea, and that’s kind of the same thing.

Nature is our muse and ceramics is our favorite medium.

All ceramic materials start with clay, which is comprised mostly of aluminium oxide, silicon dioxide, and water. Various materials are added to the clay mixture to give it the desired characteristics and then fired at a temperature to ensure it becomes vitrified.

Different clay bodies and different firing procedures yield ceramics with different properties. Those physical characteristics determine the suitable applications, perceived quality, and value of each type. What makes the ceramic truly vibrant is the surface design and our favorite is handpainted stoneware

Our design team works on sketches our inspirations on paper which are then painted with a special pen onto casted blanks. These are fired at 2200 degrees to see the final vitrified outcome. We sample hundreds of pieces every month in order to shortlist and finalize what will finally be produced for the stores.

The humble running stitch can be seen today, effortlessly gracing ramps, working its way into haute couture labels, and for some, is the crown jewel in their personal collection of beautiful textiles. To think, that it all began when housewives in Bengal decided to mend a tear, upcycle old or worn fabric by embroidering traditional motifs over it, and padding together patchwork, layering and quilting to create warm rajais for the winter months, boggles the mind. And yet, those are in fact, its origins.

Marbling Not Exactly Paint By Numbers The Wishing Chair

Nobody loves playing around with colour as much as the elves at The Wishing Chair. And this year, we’re giving the gift of oh-so-many memorable Christmases past!

Remember those days when gift-giving was a labour of love? Pressing flowers into cards for loved ones, or gift wrapping thoughtful little giveaways – a precious photograph that you had framed perhaps, or a box of cookies you baked from scratch – in homemade sheets? There’s all kinds of ways and we’re sure you’ve attempted them all too, but one our favourite times was when we discovered marbling. So elegant, so simple, each pattern and swirl as unique as the snowflakes we all long for – rather fitting for December we think.

All (He)art

Marbling involves printing multi-colored swirled or stone-like patterns on paper or fabric. The patterns are formed by first floating the colors on the surface of a liquid, and then laying the paper or fabric onto the colors to absorb them. As an art form, it goes back thousands of years. Europeans and Americans for instance, discovered beautiful variants of the form in Istanbul called ebru – but of course everything in Turkey is gorgeous, and a Japanese variant called Suminigashi meaning “floating ink” made it’s first appearance as far back as the 12th century!

And then there was us. Splashing bright inks and oil based colours into a shallow tray, manipulating the patterns either by blowing on them directly, through a straw, or fanning and stirring the colors with a single silken thread. Only this time, instead of making beautiful sheets of wrapping paper, we decided to craft something that was more for keeps.

And look what we managed to create – this stunning glassware in Salmon and Turquoise. A beloved writer once said to us, “there's always a sunrise and always a sunset every single day, and it's up to you to choose to be there for it.” Inspired as much by the beauty of this sentiment, and reflecting a precious piece of sky at dawn and dusk, you’ll find that just like every fleeting moment passing us by, no two pieces are exactly ever the same.

And just in case, like us, you can’t get enough of these beauties, we’ve also got canisters for your kitchen – and they’re as delightfully dotty as Dobby, our supra-enthusiastic house elf, who got more than just a little carried away with the paints we handed him this Christmas.

  Behind The Design Primrose Hill The Wishing Chair

Earlier this year, The Wishing Chair team got together to watch the beautiful film Amélie – all of us instantly transported, even those of us who hadn’t even been, to hip Montmartre. There must be magic in moving pictures after all!

“These are tough times for dreamers” – Amélie

Speaking of Amélie, has there ever even been such a feel good, fun film? Leave aside the music, the cinematography, the overall atmosphere if you will, to arrive now at the story – a collection of seemingly insignificant yet astonishing events chronicled carefully in a diary by writer-director Jean-Pierre Jeunet for over 20 years, before they were compiled to make this heartbreakingly lovely piece of cinema.

Consider for instance the tagline of the film, “one person can change your life.” And you will find yourself in agreement with us, that Amélie’s destiny – if only on the big screen – is nothing short of fabulous. And it is this very fabulousness that inspired our latest collection, as well as this story dear reader –behind the scenes of the creative design process of ‘Primrose Hill’.

Process this!

Our story begins with a single pencil sketch of a Parisian window, followed up quickly by multiple doodles – think stained glass arches, curving balustrades, miniature planters on balconies bursting into bloom, wrought iron frames and grills so typically French, you wouldn’t believe! Are your feet wobbly under (imagined) cobbly streets yet?

Next up – the color render. We used various hues to fill in the illustrations, narrowing it down to soothing blue-green mint and classic lavender-grey, reminiscent of characteristically laid-back French suburbia – chic, yet strikingly unique – settling eventually, on the latter. Welcome to Primrose Hill everyone. Can anyone look at this enchanting collection and not swoon?

Inspired as much by the charming, hip streets of Montmartre and the carefree playfulness of Amélie, the film, we love how our latest line-up, brims over with quirky and heartening leitmotifs – Je t’aime.

Our story begins on a lazy afternoon, holed up in The Wishing Chair’s studio, taking a collective walk down memory lane – to days that were about minty drinks and hammocks, paperback weekends squandered at the beach and walks on wet grass with a loved one.

It struck us then, that surely everyone must have had such moments – snap happy days of contentment and simple joys. Picture perfect occasions that deserve to be preserved. Well we’re here to serve.

So we’ve used the softest, coolest pastels – serene blues, refreshing greens and blushing pinks of the prettiest persuasion – to create gorgeous picture holders for your dearest memories. And just in time for an Haute summer.

At The Wishing Chair we love patterns of the timeless kind – checkered prints, bold stripes, cheerful chevron, playful polka dots. This time though, we hand drew a lovely harlequin motif to make these quaint photo frames. You know, because diamonds are aces. Well plaid, wouldn’t you say?

Mind Over Mattress

BEDSKIRTS: Tie together your bedroom décor with an elegant bed skirt while simultaneously keeping dust bunnies at bay – which is why they were invented in the first place. Pragmatic pieces, originally dubbed dust ruffles, these are composed of a skirt (either gathered or tailored) and a deck (the flat piece of fabric or platform, that lies between the mattress and your bed). The bed skirt also plays a clever role in camouflage – hiding everything unsightly that lies underneath it.
