Very interesting explanation. Actually, I have a similar headcanon. And not only the rulers were seeking and longing for personification of their country as a good sign and the very proof their kingdom some day would become significant. Also the future personifications, after they found out they’re kinda immortal and thus probably not human, felt a great urge to find their place in the world (knowing they didn’t exactly fit and belong to human society and, surprisingly, subconciously feeling a very close connection with people of one specific area and their land yet not understanding those feelings at all). It would be so until they found their destiny by ruler’s side, making them feel finally “at home”. I also think some rulers and their courts could use very cruel methods to test a future personification’s immortality. God knows how many innocent, orphaned children died in agony, being mistaken for a personification…
concept: personifications of nations as a glimpse into the future
nations appearing before the society/country they represent actually coherently exists to grow up a little and learn from their parents or the neighboring countries (north and south italy and grandpa rome, germany and prussia, egypt and ancient egypt, greece and ancient greece)
the smaller kingdoms always panicking when they didn’t find a personification because that means they won’t last in the future and are too small to be significant kings passing off found children as nations and boasting with pride their power and influence until the poor child dies in battle because of the king’s vanity and belief in their immortality imagine an actual nation accidentally killing a kid like this because in the heat of battle they didn’t realize they were human
ughhghh i’m getting emotional about this
this would really explain the otherwise terribly ahistorical view hetalia takes on (how we enforce modern notions of nations onto history when they didn’t really exist) since the hetalia universe is governed by magic, it’s very possible that the manifestation of a nation as a person was a telling factor that the nation or people were going to be around for a while
