     ‘ firstly, calm down. secondly, i hear you, man. ’  she rests her jaw along the palm of her hand. the truth is: it was just easier to think she’d been put in the good place by mistake. it was easier to just have chidi teach her ethics and moral philosophy than it was having to hide everything from vicky. now, every time she looked at the neighborhood, she thought of all the times they had been rebooted, all the times they have been tortured without even knowing it, and all that time they hadn’t even known about it all.

     ‘ we just gotta        keep going with it, alright? michael said he’ll get us into the good place if we do. ’  if they can keep this charade up. 

     “in case you haven’t noticed...” chidi looked to eleanor with stress written all over his face, the crease between his eyebrows deepening, eyes wild. “i’m not a very good liar. and that’s all we’re doing here -- we’re lying.” the knot in his stomach twisted further, and he felt his body temperature rise -- surely he’d start perspiring soon. “it’s all wrong -- it’s very, very wrong, eleanor.”

HERE IS THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER ON THE CHIDI-FRENCH DEBATE

In S01E01 Chidi tells Eleanor he’s speaking French and that The Good Place is translating it into English for her to understand. Right before that, he mentions that as a professor, his work took him all around the world - including the ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRY OF AUSTRALIA. We even see Chidi in Australia via flashbacks COMMUNICATING with his friend (aka The Red Boot Dude). Chidi never explicitly said he spoke only French, just that, in that moment, it was the language he was speaking - probably because, being raised in Senegal, it’s the language he’s most comfortable with.

Chidi is a highly educated professor. It isn’t out of the realm of possibility - especially on a show that basically belongs in the fantasy genre - that he can know both French and English.
