Most notably, Shiori and Keiko are shown in the same way. Same with Kanae and Kozue. The outliers are Tsuwabuki and of course Wakaba, who is held up by Utena and therefore doesn’t fall or close her eyes at all. End ID]

Honestly the more I look at these more parallels come to mind. Like with Kanae and Kozue, of all the duelists they have the most connection with Akio. They’re also the most obvious parallels to Utena. Kanae, in the sense that Akio is literally grooming Utena into being Kanae’s replacement. Kozue is more complicated. It’s during Kozue’s duel song where the lyrics lament lost childhood that there’s the abrupt line: amusement parks. The same place Akio took Utena in 33. Also notably, Kozue is shown with a broken leg in the same place Utena broke her leg during basketball because of Akio. It’s almost as though he’s using them as practice.

As for Shiori and Keiko… this has a lot of implications. On one hand for Keiko we could read this as her being a closeted lesbian. Shiori’s entire arc is about her feelings for Juri, and Keiko’s dysfunctional “friendship” with Nanami could be a parallel to that. But I’ll take my shipping lenses off for a moment and acknowledge that it’s Shiori who pulled her sword from Juri. And Keiko who pulled her sword from Touga. There’s also the potential parallel of them both simply being moved by jealousy.

Tsuwabuki is the outlier of the group. He falls and the camera shows all of him, not just his upper body. I think that this could be showing an innate disconnect between Tsuwabuki and the other duelists as a result of his age. His entire arc is about wanting to grow up so he can be taken seriously, so he can have Nanami’s approval, so he can be a prince, so he can have power. Showing all of him unlike the other duelists can be the narrative’s form of chastising him. Silly boy. It says. You cannot be a prince, look at you, loosing like this.

And finally Wakaba, our main girl. Wakaba doesn’t fall at all, Utena uses Wakaba’s sword to knock off her rose and pulls her back from falling. But is Utena really helping her here, or is this another well-intentioned show of cruelty from a failed prince? In preventing Wakaba from falling, she’s also forcing Wakaba back into her coffin. She’s lived in Utena’s shadow for so long, and it all meant nothing. Nothing’s even changed.
